Rome, but away from the crowds

The Holiday Inn Express has a location that's well away from the big attractions of the city, but still it's convenient. A bus line runs from a block away to the Colloseum (and near to other places tourists visit). A metro stop is about 5 blocks away, and a train station (on the line that runs in from both the Fiumicino airport and the cruise port of Civitavecchia) is about 3 blocks away. Aside from some train sounds, it is a rather quiet place, and there are a couple of nice restaurants nearby (and, very importantly, there are gelaterias nearby). Breakfast is included, and it's better than many we've experienced. This was our second stay at this hotel, and we'd probably go back on our next visit.

The hotel is about a long block away from a bus that runs directly into the ancient area of the city, about 4 blocks from the Metro, and about 3 blocks from the train station on the line that serves both the Fiumicino airport and the cruise port, Civitavecchia.

GREAT EXIT HOTEL

We visit Rome for 2-3 months every year (and we've written a book, ROME THE SECOND TIME: 15 ITINERARIES THAT DON'T GO TO THE COLISEUM, that describes our experiences). We rent apartments while we're there, but when it comes time to leave, we stay at the Holiday Inn Express. It's fashionably modern, quite inexpensive, and located near a variety of good restaurants, in a "real" Rome neighborhood. Most important for us, it's within a 5-7 minute walk of the Tusculano train station, with excellent connections to Fiumicino aiport. Tickets to the airport are E8, a big savings over a taxi (about E60). The place is frieddly and there's a nice aperitivo--a drink and food for about E5.

Mithos Taverna dell'Allegria, Piazza Scipione Ammirato 7, tel. 06.7840034. closed Monday. Comfortable, not pricey, excellent food that's a bit different from the standard Roman fare.

Clean Modern Appearance

The hotel was located on a uphill street which was tiring for seniors pulling luggage behind them . Once inside the hotel was very modern with a front desk that took care of all the details effeciently and allowed you access the assigned room if it was ready for occupancy ahead of the check in time which was very much appreciated when you are tired from your trip. Yes I would recommend this hotel to my friends as it was close to all forms of transportation making it easy to get to the sites one wished to see.
