The Gambrinus Hotel offers its guests a unique environment, outstanding for its use of fine materials and its careful attention to detail. The hall is elegant and refined: the floors are in statuary marble, and the walls are covered with wooden decorations and white lacquered wainscoting and, to illuminate the whole, there is a splendid light fitting in Murano glass. The luminous environment contrasts with the dark wood reception desk, creating an extremely pleasant effect on entering, making guests feel that they are entering a refined and comfortable environment. The other rooms are furnished with the same care, as, for example, the beautiful breakfast room, where you can still admire the original stones of the 1800s in the vaulted ceiling, and the floor in Roman travertine stone contrasts with the dark marble of the bar. In this fascinating room a plentiful and tasty buffet breakfast is served every morning, with a wide choice of fresh and wholesome products, ranging from sweet to savory foods, both hot and cold. The hotel management also offers exclusive, personalized services of high quality. The hotel also offers airport transfer, baby sitting service, concierge, currency exchange, disabled facilities, doctor on call, dry cleaning service, high speed Internet access, wireless Internet access, laundry service, lobby, lift / elevator, non-smoking rooms, restaurant, room service, safe deposit box and tour desk.

Area description
The Gambrinus Hotel is in a highly privileged position: in the historic center of Rome, in a gracious and elegant quarter near many interesting places from a historic viewpoint, but sheltered from the chaos and the city traffic. This Rome hotel is situated a few yards from Porta Pia and therefore represents the ideal base for discovering the architectural beauties of this splendid city: you can easily go to visit churches, monuments and museums on foot or by public transport, while in the evening you can relax in the refined and comfortable environment of the hotel, for example enjoying an aperitif at the bar.

Great hotel to stay at

I booked two rooms for my family of four, about four months before we actually traveled to Italy. I emailed the Gambrinus to ask if we could have both rooms close by each other. I received a response within hours and was told they would do their best. When we arrived, we learned our rooms were on the same floor, right across from each other. There were several things I liked about the Gambrinus, but the main thing I liked was how friendly and accommodating the staff was. Mr. Joe and Roberta were so warm and kind that we felt like we were staying with family. Although I mention them by name, everyone else from the bell hops to the maids were also very friendly. For us, the location was great, it is about a ten to 15 minute walk to the main Rome termini. Most of the sites were 1 to 4 miles away, which we actually liked. We did not want to stay in a touristy area, we felt that we were just far enough away that the local shops and restaurants were not full of tourists, but we were still close enough to walk or take an inexpensive cab ride to wherever we needed to go. Realize that the first day you are there, things will be a bit confusing. Rome is a city full of twists and turns, but give it a few days and you will start figuring out your way around. We were warned that cabs could get expensive, but that actually became our main mode of travel. We discovered that we could get anywhere in Rome for 10 to 20 euros. Out of the approximately 30 cab rides we took during our two weeks there, 28 were completely honest and took us directly to our destination. Only twice did we catch the cabby trying to take the long way. As far as the room itself goes, it was standard European fare. The rooms were small, but tidy. In one of our rooms, the bathroom shower was very small and in the other, it was standard size. But really, everything else was so great, I cant bring myself to complain about it. The only caution I would give to someone that is going to stay at the Gambrinus, is if you are sensitive to noise, do not get a street side room, but really that goes for all hotels in Rome because Rome is a noisy city. One last thing I want to mention is that I knew based on some of the things we had planned, we were going to be out late at night several times. I was a bit concerned about not being safe late at night. We stayed out late several nights, sometimes coming in at one or two in the morning. Not once did we ever feel uncomfortable or worried. Rome is so crowded and full of people that there were always lots of people around. And not to mention that the Gambrinus was right next to an embassy that had armed guards. If you want to stay at a decent hotel, that is a little off the beaten path...as in, not in the middle of the tourist chaos, and one that has a VERY friendly staff. You cant go wrong with the Gambrinus.

Fabulous for a Roman holiday

The friendly and helpful staff of the Gambrinus Hotel made our Roman holiday a relaxing and memorable experience. They were very knowledgeable and willing to go the extra mile to make sure we had a good holiday. They did everything from give detailed directions to us daily, to suggesting some of the local favorites to visit. Our room was clean and comfortable, and the location was perfect for relaxing and yet we were still able to walk everywhere from the Borghese to the Trevi fountain. We cant wait to return!

What an experience!

The Gambrinus Hotel is in a wonderful location. It's quiet and safe. You'll be just two doors down from the French Embassy. The staff is welcoming and helpful. They even booked a reservation for us to a museum that we needed. The breakfast was wonderful. We took advantage of it and helped us get through the day. There are two Metro stops within a 10 minute walk. The main metro/train station is only a 15 minute walk from the hotel. There's also a bus stop within a 5 minute walk. You can walk to the world famous Borghese Museum in about 15 minutes. Overall our experience in Rome was wonderful.

Wonderful honeymoon!

Hotel Gambrinus was perfect and exactly what we were looking for for our 3 nights in Roma. Being our honeymoon we looked for somewhere clean with all the facilities in a central location, which is exactly what this hotel is. The staff couldn't be more helpful. We definitely plan to return to Rome and to Hotel Gambrinus!

Adequate, but not 4 star

This hotel was rated as a 4 star hotel by another travel website [...] in 2005, according to the sign behind the desk. Our rooms were adequate, but nothing special, and certainly not immaculate. Staff was helpful, especially at breakfast and in figuring out transportation. Breakfast was typical for a Rome hotel - not quite the same as the picture shown on the website, but adequate. Located about a 5 minute walk from bus stops, 12 minutes from train station. This is probably a typical 3 star hotel.

Rome

We stayed at the hotel for our first trip to Rome. Not a bad location, with the Roma Pass we were able to take the bus from out front or the Metro (a few blocks away) to all of the historical sites. It is a nicely remodeled older hotel with small quaint rooms, staff is friendly and breakfast was always very good. Windows kept out most all the noise (inner city location) but the A/C was hard pressed to keep up, even on cooler days. Rooms were clean and nicely kept. It is far enough from the historical sites to have nice restaurants and shopping close by and close enough that you can see everything with a short ride on the Metro or bus.

If you are planning a visit for 3 days and plan to see the sites get a Roma Pass, its a lot of value for the money. Also highly recommend Rick Steves' Rome 2010 book.

Ok, but not a four-star hotel

The hotel is ok but it is definitely not a four-star hotel. Negative aspects: The room and bathroom was ok (clean and comfortable), but the shower was way too small. Plus, if you used hot water in the shower there was almost no water pressure at all. Also, the internet never worked. We tried both their computers and our laptop and we were never able to go online. Positive aspects: Breakfast buffet was varied and all the food was good. The location was not bad.

Better hotels in Rome

Small room is an understatement. Had an enclosed shower, though, which I here is uncommon. Breakfast in the basement was below average.
