Converted villa outside St. Peter’s Square
Once a 15th century villa, the Hotel Columbus has been converted to a 92-room hotel. Located on the promenade leading to St. Peter’s Square and meters from the Tevere River and Castel Sant’ Angelo, the Hotel Columbus sits among Rome’s most notable attractions. Rooms are basic, but La Veranda, the hotel’s restaurant situated in a grand hall with frescoed ceilings, is a must-see.
Highlights
  • Outside Vatican City

Tour busses and transportation to Termini is found outside the hotel.

Perfect location

The perfect location. We were literally 2 minutes (walking) to the Vatican. Also great restaurants, and gelatos. Hotel room was ok. It had a college fraternity funk to it. Reminded me of college as I had those type of carpet, and would smell really bad due to spilling drinks on it. We only returned to the hotel at night to sleep, so the smell was tolerable. After opening the windows.

Comfortable

Overall it was a good stay. The air conditioner broke one night but they gave us 2 fans and we survived. They fixed it when we were out and about the following day so not too bad. Clean rooms and staff were very nice.

Winter Vacay

Excellent location! 2 minute walk to the Vatican, 10 minute walk to the Metro Station and shops and restaurants are nearby. Everything is accessible by foot. This hotel is a historical site itself, just staying here feels very authentic and walls are thick and you don't hear the room next door. The shuttle service is definitely worth it if your being picked up by at the airport since they wait for you with a sign. It's about 10 euros more than a taxi from the Airport to Hotel and going to the airport costs less than a taxi. Pick Pocketing is a major issue in Rome's Metro station and train, the shuttle is worth the extra euros. However that's pretty much the only crime, rarely there's violent crime. English is a challenge for the majority of the the staff with the exception of that one older guy working there, that guy is very hospitable. He must love his job. He's always greeting you going in and out! The WiFI is definitely slow and poor coverage in rooms, but considering this is a 500 year old hotel with think walls, best bet is to use WiFI in the common areas. The rooms are clean and big, the bathrooms is an interesting experience, it's impossible to take a shower so you have to take a bath, oh but the vegetable soap and shampoo they give you, it feels so good.

Live like a monk but pay like a king!

The initial impression from the exterior may seem impressive but closer scrutiny reveals the flaws. The reception staff attitude varied from superficial to downright rude. The interior of the hotel retains the old features of the monastery but then so do the furnishings. The corridors are long, tatty and, at times, dirty. Our "suite" consisted of a single room containing a double bed and a single bed, an old creaky wooden wardrobe with three coat hangers, and a prehistoric TV perched on an equally prehistoric minibar. The working and seating area consisted of a wooden table about the size of a large food tray and an old wooden chair with a stained and torn cushion. All of the furnishings were old wooden objects presumably picked up from a boot fair or garage sale. Nothing was old enough to be considered antique and the impression we received was "tatty and chipped". One small window looked on to the main road that leads to St Peter's Square which is cobbled and so the vibrations and noise from the traffic made for a fitful night's sleep. The only modern fittings in the room were three table lamps and one standard lamp which were a stark contrast to the wooden furnishings. And of course, those that actually functioned (3 of 4) were fitted with bulbs so weak that they have the paradoxical effect of making the room appear darker! The bathroom was stark, poorly equipped, mouldy and flooded completely whenever the shower was used. Breakfast was passable but at 15euros a head we preferred to drink our coffee tainted morning tea elsewhere after the first two mornings. Were there any good points? Well the restaurant is in a lovely fresco ceilinged room looking on to a quiet courtyard. Did we eat there? Well no because of the rude staff. And so we can make no comment as to the quality of the food but if it reflects the breakfast then it would have been impressively plain. The position is good for reaching The Vatican but quite a trek to the other interesting areas of both Ancient and Modern Rome. Overall impression? An Italian Fawlty Towers without the British Humour. Why did we choose it? I mistook it for somewhere I had stayed 25 years previously. Did we complain at the time? Yes. I speak Italian fluently and we politely and discreetly made our concerns clear. Did they do anything? Yes. They made us feel very bad about voicing our opinions. Would we recommend it? No way!! There are many more hotels with charm and better facilities in Rome for a similar or better price. Anything positive? One of the cleaning ladies was charming. Our recommendation: Stay elsewhere and pass by when you visit the Vatican but just stroll in and take a peak at the frescoed vaulted ceiling of the restaurant. Don't worry about being accosted by the reception staff as they will be too occupied by their text messages or the internet or probably not even present!! NM. Grand 15th century residence

My husband and I loved exploring this handsome building with it's gorgeous painted ceilings and antiques. It was close to the Vatican, Castel Sant' Angelo and the Tiber River, with other sites within walking distance.

3 minutes to St Peter's

The location was great relative to St Peter's and the Vatican. Nightlife ends really early. Close to Red Line Hop On Hop Off. Hotel restaurant fairly expensive. Rooms small, but good value for 2-3 nights.

Amazing location

The only way this location could get better is if you stayed at the Vatican! Could not believe the view. The rooms are very basic, the A/C is not the best, and our room did not have a shower curtain. Do not believe them when they say the wifi works in the rooms, if you can connect you will be kicked out almost immediately, but they have a wi fi area in the lobby and in the bar. The restaurant is amazing! We never ate breakfast there, at 15 euro's each for breakfast it seemed a little steep. However, there is a nice cafe a few doors down. Front desk staff very helpful, and communicated well, but if you call down late evening may not speak English.
