Converted villa outside St. Peter’s Square
Once a 15th century villa, the Hotel Columbus has been converted to a 92-room hotel. Located on the promenade leading to St. Peter’s Square and meters from the Tevere River and Castel Sant’ Angelo, the Hotel Columbus sits among Rome’s most notable attractions. Rooms are basic, but La Veranda, the hotel’s restaurant situated in a grand hall with frescoed ceilings, is a must-see.
Highlights
  • Outside Vatican City
  • Enchanting restaurant
  • Spinal-cranial treatments
  • Free parking
Location
Hotel Columbus sits between the Tevere River and the entrance to St. Peter’s Square. Guests walk to St. Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museum and Castel Sant’ Angelo. Tour busses and transportation to Termini is found outside the hotel.
Rooms
Rooms vary in size, but all have a simple feel. Outfitted with basic furniture and sparse décor, rooms at the Hotel Columbus offer an uncomplicated environment to rest and relax. Look out on a courtyard or Via della Conciliazione. All rooms have air conditioning, TV, mini-bar, high-speed Internet and room service.
Features
Steps from St. Peter’s Square, the Hotel Columbus is ideal for those looking to spend time in Vatican City. Tour busses are boarded outside the hotel and Piazza Navona and the Pantheon are across the river. During warm months, the garden seats guests for breakfast, lunch and dinner with live piano music. Alternative cranial-sacral treatments are booked through the hotel.

Great Hotel, Central To Everything!!!

Brilliant experience at this hotel, the hotel could not be any more central, when we looked out our window we actually could see st peters basillica! All the open top busses stopped across the road from the hotel for tours and the airport bus dropped us less than 5 minutes from the street

Too Small

The bathroom which included the sink and shower points were too small. I would have perfered a tub over the small shower. The staff was great namely Ms. Steffana and Ms. Luann. Thanks for putting it all together for me.

A perfect place if St. Peter's Square and the tours are your target for visiting.

The staff are very courteous and helpful despite the language barrier. It is very near St. Peter's Square. The tour buses are right across the street and the office of the bus tour is less that 5-minute walk. The hike to the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel is not that far and it is very easy to locate from the hotel. There are a lot of souvenir stores, restaurants, eatery, etc. near the hotel. The draw back is the money changer - the exchange rate is low compared to what I got from the US before I left. The internet connection was good and I was able to print my boarding pass from the hotel for my return trip. I will certainly recommend this hotel to my friends if they will plan to go to the Vatican.

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

The office of the bus tours (around Rome and the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel) is the third building from the hotel (the building before the gate of St. Peter's Square). It is better to get the euro 10 trip because you can really see all 12 attractions in one day. It is also good to buy the euro 26 ticket for the hike to the Vatican museum and Sistine Chapel because a guide will lead you to the place and you will be given priority entrance and you will not have to line-up together with all other tourists. It is a very, very, very long line if you don't purchase this ticket and you will have to wait for hours. You will be on your own after the guide gives you your ticket inside the museum. The walk back is very easy as you will be walking with a lot of people going to the basilica of St. Peter's. If you want to attend mass at the basilica of St. Peters (daily mass at 9, 10, 11, 12, and 5) you must line up at the entrance gate and go straight to the main altar and just tell the guard you will attend mass. He will tell you where to go. I was able to attend 3 masses there. If you want cheap food, do not eat at the hotel. It is very expensive. Eat at the bar or pizzeria which is a block away from the hotel. There are also carts which sell panini and other food items. But the watered bottle in these carts will cost you euro 3 but in the bar it is only euro 1 and euro 1.50 at the pizzeria. If you want cheaper souviner items go to the right side entrance (right facing St. Peter's). There are more items there which are cheaper than the ones near the hotel and across the street. The restaurant across the street is also very expensive. Their banana and apple is euro 2 each. The bar sells them at euro 1 each only. I hope I can go back there!!!

As great as it gets in Rome!!!!

HOTEL COLUMBUS on Via Conciliazione in Rome is a perfect fit for anyone who wants to be in the heart of St.Peter's basilica. Only a few steps away! It's a palace of the Rovere family that was converted into a hotel!!! The Amenities are good; Rooms are adequate and quiet!!! Hotel Columbus has a great ambiance and Medieval environment . The Breakfast for 15euros in the hotel Columbus is a bargain compared other cafes in the area...which are all so pricey! Staff is helpful! Need a cab, limo or help to find a bus to the shopping district...they know it all. Also, Internet available and I-pad can be rented per day ... we will always stay at the Hotel Columbus when we come to Rome!

Stay in a well-maintained 500-year-old building that was originally a palace.

Written October 27, 2011. It was very pleasant. With a front-door view of and just two short blocks from St. Peter's Square. Several options for good meals, including at the hotel and nearby. Convenient shopping for souvenirs in many nearby shops. Rome tour buses stop right across the street. Knowledgeable English-speaking staff giving valuable information to inquiring tourists. Close enough to Rome for day-long tour hotel pick-up and return for outlying tours, such as to Florence and Assisi, and for airport shuttle drop off and pickup at hotel by independent shuttle operators. The above was written October 27, 2011.

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

Written October 27, 2011. If you want to make an individual visit to the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel, be in line early (The hotel staff recommended to us by 8:00 am, but we arrived there about 7:20 am, and only one person was ahead of us.). The gate opens to individual visitors at 9:00 am. You can purchase one ticket inside that gets you into both. The entrance is about one mile from the hotel. And try to remember that the chapel and museum are closed most Sundays and some holidays. Ask the hotel staff about the closure dates. They can also sell you, at a slightly higher price, a ticket with an assigned time and transportation to the entrance, so that you do not have to wait in line. We passed literally hundreds of visitors waiting in line as we came out of the museum at 10:10 am and walked back to the hotel. We only had time to look closely at the Sistine Chapel because we had to catch a 11:10 am shuttle to the airport. We wish we had left ourselves more time for the visit, to see more of the museum. The above was written October 27, 2011.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY

The location of the hotel is very convinient, it is right next to St Peters square. That is the only good point about this hotel. It is extremely overpriced for the value you get. The rooms have not been renovated in 50 years! It is stinky, dirty and very outdated! The furniture is very old and all scratched up. The bathrooms are very old and not clean. We have to change our room because of the bathroom and very stincky smell of the carpet in the room. The bathroom was tiny with a hole in the floor and a shower head on the wall with two curtains going around. It was horrible, the tile was all broken and very dirty, When we made a complain, we were told " It is an antique hotel", and yes it is, but it doesn't have to be dirty and all outdated... Breakfast was just a very basic continental style, but without any fresh fruits... I would not recommend to anyone to stay in this hotel!

Super great location and great hotel!

The hotel is great. Very clean, air conditioning, fridge with bar, safebox. The bathroom was ok howevery the bath is small but everything in europe is smaller. The best location 1 block away from the Vatican, the tour buses are right in front of the hotel. The breakfast was included and it was very good.
