A great find

The location's great - quiet residential area but only 2 tram stops from Piazza del Popolo which is within the 48 euro fixed price zone for taxis from the airport. Staff couldn't have been more helpful, pro-actively providing a map and information when we checked in and being on hand to give advice and book taxis whenever needed. Really friendly and speak good English. Our rooms were quiet (as requested) and facing the internal courtyard. The breakfast room is fairly small but was never crowded, had a good selection of food and a great view across the river to St. Peter's. The only detractors were it would have been nice to have a bar and a lounge area to sit in, other than the breakfast room there didn't seem to be any public areas. A minor point though which didn't affect our enjoyment.

Get a Roma Pass! It was so worth it just to walk past the huge queue at the Colosseum and go straight in.

Would go there again

We actually stayed there two times (had a break in-between because we went to another town for a week). During the first time we went all over town to check for a cheaper place in Rome but a lot of the ¨Hostels¨ and ¨Hotels¨ and BnB´s are in some apartment buildings or in some very shabby looking neighborhoods. At the Astrid Hotel it was clean, we had comfort (first time smaller room with shower, second time bigger room with bath tub) and both was better than what we found for a little cheaper or even more expensive places elsewhere. The breakfast is included and very good (buffet style, meats, cheeses, breads & cakes, hard boiled eggs, cereals, fruits, coffee, tea juice etc - you can also ask for eggs done in a different way and for cappuccino instead of coffee). Location was great as well - about 15 minutes walk from the downtown( Piazza del Popolo) (, or you can also take a Tram (Number 2, right outside of the Flaminio Metro Station - get out at ¨Ankara¨ Station - 3 Stops- for Astrid Hotel). (Metro Tickets cost 1.50 Euro, you can use the same ticket on the tram within 100 min, but make sure to stamp it again on the yellow machines inside the tram - same goes in return, ticket bought on the tram can be used in the metro!) We also walked along the river to the Vatican, takes a little longer but very beautiful walk and lot´s of other things to see on the way.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

For the people (like us) who where on a budget. - Rome is very expensive - eating and drinking out, even snacking at the Pizza Imbiss can cost a lot. There is a Store called ¨Spar¨ (Sign looks like a green pine-tree in a circle with red writing underneath it). You can buy bread, cheese etc there, the bakery has REALLY tasty cheese & tomato sauce bread/pizza for 1/3rd of the outside prize. They also sell wine etc. (We used the Store that is near the Travi Fountain area, but if you ask around, there might be a closer one). There is a fridge inside the Astrid Hotel room! Also, no need to buy bottled water. All over Rome you have little water fountains/spits with drinkable water - just fill up your water bottle there!

BEWARE: Posted picture is not of this hotel

Beware that the posted picture of the glamorous large pinkish building is not the picture of this hotel. It is the picture of a Rome monument that is about 3 miles away from this hotel. The rooms are the smallest that I have ever stayed at during my 30 years of international travel. The shower is 2 feet by 2 feet and there is no counter space for your toiletries. Breakfast is average and the location is about a 30 minute walk from the closest metro station. You can, however, take a tram a few blocks away from the hotel that would take you to the metro station.

Hotel pictures are inaccurate and deceiving

Hotel Astrid occupies two floors in a larger building. Other floors are occupied by various offices and companies. The hotel rooms are the tiniest I have ever seen. We got a room with a queen size bed. The room was so tiny that there was literally only one foot of space between the bed and the walls on either side of the bed. The bathroom, while clean, is very old and could use some renovation. The staff was friendly but they can only barely communicate in broken English. By U.S. standards, this hotel is a 1 star hotel and by European standards, it is a 2 star hotel. It is by no means whatsoever a 3 star hotel as advertised online. The breakfast room is about 10 feet by 10 feet and gets totally packed by as few as a dozen guests and breakfast itself quite basic and disappointing. We regret our selection of Hotel Astrid which we picked based on the misleading pictures on this site.

Excellent Hotel, great price

We just returned from a week at the Astrid. While it is a little ways out from the main tourist areas, it is just fantastic. The staff all spoke perfect English and were extremely helpful. The rooms are very nice by European standards and the beds were comfortable. The free minibar was a nice touch and the free wi-fi made calling home really easy. A really nice traditional Roman breakfast was included on the 5th floor every morning with breads, cereal, meats, etc... About a block away is a feeder train to the Rome metro system that runs by every 5 minutes or so. Just a few stops and you are at Rome's North Gate, the Piazza del Popolo, which has fantastic shopping and places to eat. From there you can take the Flaminio Metro stop to anywhere you want to go in Rome. Very easy. While there are many hotels close to tourist areas, I appreciated the Astrid location because it is in a really nice area with lots of locals, which means good places to eat. Another bonus for Americans is the Astrid is owned by Best Western, which means you get the Best Western cancellation policy. All they need is 24 hours notice. Most European hotels charge an extra 10% or more for the option to cancel and get your money back if you have to. That does away with the cost of travel insurance coverage in the event of having to cancel. I would definitely stay at the Astrid again. Especially because: 1. Very friendly, helpful staff. 2. Clean room, standard European size. 3. Free wifi and free breakfast and minibar. 4. Location 5. Price.

GREAT HOTEL!

The hotel staff was friendly right from the beginning. We enjoyed their service and hospitality. The amenities were amazing and we admired the staff for doing everything they can to help us. Although the noisy cars, trucks, mopeds, etc. didn't help much when sleeping at night, the view, balcony, and comfort of the room easily made up for it. While there isn't much to see around the hotel, just a few blocks and you are in the midst of Rome. Plus, this hotel gives you the added advantage of learning how their public transportation system operates. Overall, the hotel experience was amazing and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Money-saving tip: Not Applicable

To save some money, take the city's public transportation system instead of a taxi. If you are travelling with a tourbus, try to stop near a shop that sells souveniers. The souvenier stands located by the monuments are expensive and try to get you be giving you a supposed discount. There are great retaurants all around. Don't be fooled by the appearance. Sometimes, even the most unusual looking restaurant serves one of the greatest foods in the city. The price may even be cheaper.
