- The Palace Hotel in Matera is located in the center of town. Matera is a fashionable old town inhabited from time immemorial. The Sassi district, a vast historical area, constitutes a city unto itself, completely carved out of the face of the calcareous rock -what is known as tufa stone. For its uniqueness it became the first site in the world declared a "cultural landscape" by UNESCO in 1993. The Gravina, the Murgia and more than 120 rupestrian churches with Byzantine frescos make this place a unique environment.
