Well Chosen!

This hotel is within Lucca's Walls, but is at one end of the area inside. However, this is not a disadvantage because it is in a very interesting and attractive part of the town, with more space, and close to the nicest part of the walls. A more central hotel may well feel "hemmed in" and less relaxing. We had a "superior" room and these are in a separate building a 90-second walk away, The only disadvantage would be if it was raining, but the quality of the rooms much more than makes up for this. Overall, the hotel is fully 4-star quality, with very helpful and knowledgeable reception staff and a very good buffet breakfast. There is an area, near reception, where tea, coffee, soft drinks, cakes, etc. are available throughout the day, free, until 7pm. There is no restaurant, but reception will make recommendations and reservations for you. We loved Lucca and spent 5 days getting to know it quite well. If we go back, we will DEFINITELY choose the same hotel.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

A restaurant called Port Ellen Clan - the best meal we had, but not the most expensive and close to the hotel. If we'd found it earlier, we'd have gone more than once. Buca di Sant Antonio is the most famous (and most expensive# restaurant in Lucca, located centrally and a 10+ minute walk from the hotel. The food is very good but it's more the ambience and "experience" that you would go for. If you ask the hotel to book it, you should get a very good table #because they are linked to each other).

Best stay in Italy

We stayed two nights between stays with family members and then returned for one night before our departure to the U.S.. This was our best Hotel in Italy. Could not ask for more. Used the bikes they provided for free.

Trattoria da "Leo." Via Tegrini. Superb, family run, excellent traditional cooking - and always busy with locals. You would be best to book.

Amazing hotel, wonderful people

I am a Marriott Elite member, so when there is a Marriott, I usually stay there. But the Hotel Ilaria was a truly outstanding experience from the moment I arrived. From [...] greeting to the kind familiarity of the whole staff, they made me feel special. The rooms were very clean and the bath large and modern. The bed was a bit too firm for my taste but nothing I couldn't take for six nights. The breakfast buffet was huge and delicious (and free, like almost everything else at the hotel). There was free car parking and free use of bicycles, although I did not take advantage of either. Internet was free. My room looked out on the gardens nearby. The hotel is superbly located in the historical center of the city, which shares most of the characteristics I described about the hotel.

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

My best meal was at the Ristorante d'Oliva which is central but I found it by mistake on a side street. By contrast, skip the Ristorante Puccini. It is next to the house Puccini was born in (which is not open at present), but the food is overpriced and iffy. Other good choices are the Ristorante de Noblesse and the Antica Locanda Pescheria. If you eat a good breakfast at the Ilaria (lots of fresh fruit, breads, eggs, cheese, etc.) you probably only need one other meal a day! For attractions, visit every single one of the churches. They are amazing -- my personal favorites are San Michele and San Frediano. But don't miss Santa Reparata -- you can view the pre-Christian and early Christian archaeological sites underneath the medieval church. Lucca is a wonderful, friendly city, and the Hotel Ilaria exhibits all of those characteristics.
