What a perfect experience!!
We just got back from a week at the Relais Modern. We LOVED this place for its simplicity, amenities, friendly staff and location. Working backwards, the location is about a 5 minute walk north of the David, a few more minutes to the Duomo and about a 15 minute walk to the Arno river, but it's just outside of tourista central so that you don't walk out the door to throngs and it's very quiet at night. There is are no restaurants right outside the doors, but I count that as a plus, and there is a lovely caffe/pasticceria just a short block west, perfect for a late afternoon caffe and postcard writing while my other half napped a bit. The staff is just lovely. Alberto really takes care of you, and his concierge Bryan was a joy to see at breakfast where he lays out a nice, simple European continental breakfast of croissants (various kinds through the week, some better than others, but all good) rolls, ham, cheese, salami, yogurt, cereal, granola, juices, a sweet cake (again, various) jams, Nutella, honey, tea and/or Bryan will make you fresh caffe, Americano, latte or cappuccino, PLUS trays to take it all to your room, or they'll bring it to you if you like. The rest of the staff also impressed. Frankly, we were expecting less from such a small B&B, but they operate like a B&B/hotel, which is impressive given they only have maybe The room was spacious and clean, with a very tall window with the ubiquitous automated blinds that we came to love. The bed comfortable, there was a personal safe, and the bathroom was nearly palatial by Italian standards, with bidet, built-in towel heater and hair dryer and lovely tan marble. The Wi-Fi is free and as quick as we have at home here in NYC. The clean, simple interiors show off the art they present on their walls, and not-for-nothing the lack of clutter (shelves and an attractive built-in suitcase stand/hanging rack instead of closets/dressers) make unpacking and packing back up a breeze - no worries that we left something behind in a drawer or cupboard! Our week was just a perfect experience. We felt immediately welcome and at home in Florence and especially at the Relais Modern.

Dining tip:
Short walk from hotel
After EXTENSIVE research involving a dozen or so of the best regarded gelaterias and after tasting dozens of flavors, my favorite cup came from Carapina's gelateria at Via Lambertesca 18r. Their fresh fig, marsala wine and Neroassoluta (the deepest, richest chocolate I've ever had, in ANY form) flavors made this my favorite cup of the week. Close seconds: Perche No (Fig and ricotta flavors were stunning!), Grom, Il Re del Gelato, Venchi (for chocoholics) and Vivoli (fresh plum and black sesame were standouts).

Nice, clean, but a bit of a walk.
Nice modern hotel in Florence. Rooms were equipped with modern TV's and suprisingly good cooling system for hot summer trips. The lobby was stocked with plenty of good travel books and flyers. The hotel is a bit far away from the main attractions, but overall, it was worth the walk.

Time-saving tip:
Short walk from hotel
Making reservations at the big museums was helpful in getting to see the major attractions in just our short time in Florence. Especially during peak travel times, I highly recommend going this route.

Amazingly modern and clean Hotel
Very near Florence city center the "Duomo". Modern Hotel with very courteous staff. No need to use a lift it is located on the first floor. That is a really good thing when hauling bags when you are travelling and moving in and out of the Hotel. Pleaseant breafasts. Quiet and restful if you need that. Spacious room to sprawl out and not feel hemmed in.

Nice place, but out of way location
The hotel room was large and modern. The hotel was in a quiet part of town, maybe 15 minutes walk north of the main church, or a 5 minute bus ride. The hotel is a Bed and Breakfast type hotel, so there was no one to check us in when we arrived. The keys were left for us. This was my 4th trip to Florence, so I would recommend staying between the main church and the Ponte Vecchio if you want to stay where the action is, and can afford it.
