Nothing special but it works for a night or two

if you're passing through Florence and need a place for a night or two this hotel could be it but it's a bit overpriced even for that. For one thing Hotel lobby looks promising but the moment you get in those shaky elevators and claustrophobic hallways you realize something is amiss. Wait till you get to your room. It'll be smaller than expected, crammed and with Internet that doesn't work. But if you plan to spend time around town you won't be spending much time around this hotel since Florence has much more to offer than bad hotels. In additions parking is very expensive (20 Euros a day), breakfast is included and is really awful and don't buy anything from the bar (3 Euros for a can of Coke). As a necessity it works but there are cheaper alternatives near the same location with the same services.

Next to this hotel is a restaurant called Outside. Ask hotel manager t give you a 10% discount coupon. It can come in handy for a dinner since the food at the hotel is appalling.

Great for English-speaking travelers

This hotel is right on the Arno river at the San Nicolas bridge - about a 10-15 minute walk to the Duomo and other major sites. The staff speaks good English and caters to mostly American tourists and tour groups. The groups (mainly high school groups when I was there) can get loud and out of hand, but other than that the hotel was pleasant. Rooms were large by European standards, very clean, and comfortable. For some reason, my air conditioner didn't work on one night, but the second night it worked just fine. The bathroom was very large and had both a hand-held and fixed showerhead. A nice hotel and very reasonably priced. I'd go there again as a solo tourist, or with my family of teenaged kids. This may not be the best place for families with younger kids.

Trattoria Buzzino is wonderful! Right near the Piazza Vecchio on Via de Leoni, 8r. Really nice proprietors and probably the best steak I've eaten in years.

Florence Sojourn

Grand Hotel Mediterraneo was definitely good value for the money. Only two drawbacks: the hotel was a 20-minute walk from the center of town in the blazing sun when the temp averaged 97 degrees, and many of the hotel staff were not friendly -- generally polite but without warmth.

Great hotel location!

We walked the streets of Florence. We took a train to Venice for a day. We went on a wine tasting tour to Tuscany. The food at the hotel was AWFUL! Needs improvement and the staff at the bar was unfriendly. We did not like the food for the complimentary breakfast. Add waffles or more American type food. This was the BEST hotel room I have had in Europe so far.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

The pizza restaurant next to the hotel was AWFUL - we could not even eat it. There was an AWESOME restaurant - go right out of hotel, take a left at light and walk across the Arno river and second street on left ...it's called Trattoria L'Orologio - great home made Italian food. Good gelato across the street from the restaurant.
