Hotel Croce di Malta is the ideal place to find rest after an intense workday, an important conference or a lengthy visit to Florentine monuments. The hotel is located in what up until the mid 1800's was the old Suore della Carita (Sisters of Charity) convent, which offered hospitality to Florence's "poor, virtuous maidens". The convent was built on a pre-existing building from Roman times. Marble sculptures and relief's date back from this period, as well as a splendid column decorated with an Ionic capital that can still be admired today in various areas of the hotel. Its structure is a harmonious fusion of Tuscan renaissance forms and contemporary architectural design. The rooms and interior decoration stem from essential, pure geometrical forms where the meticulous play of full and empty shapes creates a special, modern ambience. The hotel encloses a lovely inner garden with swimming pool, a small jewel rarely found in Florence's centre. Enjoy tranquility and relax among magnolias and wisterias, sunbathe or take a refreshing dip in the pool. From the last floor you can reach the spacious panoramic terrace, yet another one of the hotel's enviable assets with a bar available for cocktails on sunny days. From here the eyes take in an evocative, sweeping 360-degree vista comprising of the elegant, sophisticated shape of the Duomo against the backdrop of Florentine hills, the red cupola by Brunelleschi, the whiteness of the marble embellished with green of the glorious Santa Maria Novella facade and its soaring Romanic-Gothic bell tower. At sunset this wondrous view lights up with all the nuances of red, yellow and gold springing forth from rooftops and building facades. The hotel also provides facilities like banquet facilities, Bar, Concierge, Doctor on call, High-Speed Internet access, Wireless Internet access, Lift / Elevator, Lobby, Non-smoking rooms, Parking facilities at cost, Reception, Room service, Safe deposit box and Smoke-free hotel.

The restaurant, where the wood panelling provides a warm atmosphere, traditional Tuscan cuisine linked to the flavours of the area meets international cuisine, thus also satisfying the most refined palates. Here country tradition meets Tyrrhenian Sea fishermen's tradition, so among specialities such as the typical Florentine ribollita, aubergine and boletus mushroom "Pappa", and Chianina beef with rocket, there are fresh seafood dishes such as Caciucco alla Livornese or sea bass with aromatic herbs.

You have to embrace the history of the hotel and understand its former use as a convent ran by a charity to fully understand its décor and lack of luxury! The staff are really nice and very helpful and the location is excellent. However, if you want a power shower and modern surroundings forget it as this is not what this hotel is about. However, if you want to step back in time to a very interesting building with great staff give it a try.

wonderful staff and ambience

Would recommend Mon, Mar 31, 2014
We were in Firenze for a convention. The place is in middle of the city on a quiet street. Breakfast was good and the staff efficient.Front desk people Michelle, Frederica and Andrea always ready to help, polite and provide good information. Reading a book or getting some work done pool side in the garden or extension of dining room overlooking the pool or in bar area was a plus. It is 4 star hotel, but not stuffy. Some fixtures need modifications for convenience of older people and we have given them suggestions and they will make alterations accordingly. Small shops around, so buy little things like bottle of water, etc from these stores across the hotel.

Was ok

Would recommend Fri, May 28, 2010
The hotel was near train station and we had to walk in the rain to find it, unsympathetic staff for sure. Answers to questions were curt and dismissive to us. Rooms were clean but small, bathroom shower is a puzzle to use and we flooded it most every day. (half a glass shower curtain that did not contain the water) no one would answer us how to use it properly. Breakfast was good and the hotel was clean and has elevators. Porter staff were very helpful.

Money saver

Dont eat near the hotel, take the walk into the city heart of Florence and find great places, get a map and they're very easy to find. We took cabs which always cost 10 Euros no matter where you go so we walked and it was much better...only had breakfast at the hotel. (included)
