Zanhotel Il Canale is located located at a short walk from the railway station. In the heart of old Bologna overlooking the Aposa channel. This is a natural watercourse that was formerly used to supply water to the city and to the moat that surrounded its walls. Today it flows in an underground gallery crossing the city. A few suggestive stretches of the channel, which flows at the surface, can still be seen. One of these is next to the hotel. Zanhotel Il Canale is a delightful, cosy hotel where Zanhotel hospitality joins with a unique atmosphere. I was spending just a few days in Bologna prior to attending a nearby retreat and this charming hotel was ideally located within easy walking distance to the central train station and most of the historic city sights. The airport bus stop is also
very close by.
The hotel is located on one of Bologna's typical narrow alleys just off the main street in the historic old city and, although the single room I had was small and a bit dark (it had a single window overlooking a small patio and the lighting in the room was not very bright), it was quiet and charmingly decorated with a good size bath with shower, hair dryer, and magnifying mirror. There was also a minibar and a large armoire with a safe for storing valuables.
The included breakfast had a great selection of hard boiled eggs, cheeses and meats, pastries, yogurt, fresh fruit and excellent coffee served in the warmly decorated basement with its traditional arched ceilings.
I feel it is a great bargain for the price and location and I would definitely stay here again if I were to return to Bologna.
Hotel features (5 = best, 1 = worst):
Short walk from hotel
There are many "stand-up" bars close by where you can get pizza or pannini and soft drinks or coffee so you can eat very inexpensively if you don't mind not having table service.
I stayed at the hotel for 2 weeks while I helped my daughter get settled in Bologna for her junior year abroad. The single room was typically small for this type of a hotel, but it did have some charm, and seemed to have a lot more personality
when the shutters were open.
Great location, tons of great places to eat within walking distance, as is the train station for making day trips.
I'm not a breakfast eater but it seemed like a pretty good spread to me - all sorts of things like fruit and meats and cereals, et.
Most of he staff were really personable and very helpful.
