The Mercantile has had an association with Dames Street and Dublin city center since the early 19th century. Scottish insurance company North British & Mercantile Insurance who had offices in Edinburgh, Glasgow, London and Calcutta opened their first Irish office on Dames Street in 1835. Dames Street was at that time the commercial and political center of Ireland and all major financial institutions had premises on the street. This was preceded by the Mercantile Credit Company of Ireland that continued the financial tradition of the Mercantile until 1962.

Disappointed

This is was a fairly nice old hotel and staff was nice. The location was on busy street and late night people in the busy street all night long. If you want any sleep don't stay here.

Dublin Gem

This hotel is a good bargain with a great location. It is located approximately 1/2 block from the main Dublin tour office, a great place to get info and arrange tours (the tour buses stop at the office). Everything you need is close by (Starbucks, banks, bus routes, and the Dublin Castle). It's all right next to the hotel. We forgot some items when we checked out and when we returned to Dublin to fly out, the staff had it conveniently packaged and waiting for us. There is a great restaurant/bar in the hotel.
