The Mercantile has had an association with Dames Street and Dublin city center since the early 19th century. Scottish insurance company North British & Mercantile Insurance who had offices in Edinburgh, Glasgow, London and Calcutta opened their first Irish office on Dames Street in 1835. Dames Street was at that time the commercial and political center of Ireland and all major financial institutions had premises on the street. This was preceded by the Mercantile Credit Company of Ireland that continued the financial tradition of the Mercantile until 1962.

Very Noisy on Weekends

I've been to 24 countries and over 100 cities. This was the first time I've seen earplugs included in the coffee bar. My room was at the back above a couple of bars, and the window, though small, let all the noise in.

The Middle of Everything

The hotel is great. The staff is very friendly and helpful. There are only 28 rooms so they really do try to get to know you. Its located within walking distance of most of the tourist attractions. There is a bus stop less than 100m down the street (for both city and hop on hop off tours). The restaurant is nice; limited menu but good food and excellent service. The bar is great with decent drink prices (for the temple bar area) and live music. It is easy walking distance to temple bar (bar area) and Grafton Street (pedestrian [no cars] shopping street). Plenty of restaurants and shops in the area. As mentioned before, it is located in the middle of the action; so if you are an early to bed sort of person this may not be the place for you as it may be louder than you like with the music and people. Otherwise stay out with them and help create the noise! I hope they have vacancies next time I'm in Dublin!

Disappointed

This is was a fairly nice old hotel and staff was nice. The location was on busy street and late night people in the busy street all night long. If you want any sleep don't stay here.

Dublin Gem

This hotel is a good bargain with a great location. It is located approximately 1/2 block from the main Dublin tour office, a great place to get info and arrange tours (the tour buses stop at the office). Everything you need is close by (Starbucks, banks, bus routes, and the Dublin Castle). It's all right next to the hotel. We forgot some items when we checked out and when we returned to Dublin to fly out, the staff had it conveniently packaged and waiting for us. There is a great restaurant/bar in the hotel.
