Let me preface the following story with the following disclaimer: my father has been a manager at various luxury hotels since before I was born. Since finishing my education, I have been a consultant with 3 different consulting firms and have
lived in hotels for the past 5-6 years while traveling to 30+ countries in my free time. I have status with Hilton, Marriott, and Starwood (and will probably never stay at a Starwood property again). In none of these situations/circumstances over the past 30+ years have I ever had/heard of the following happen (the only thing close was a BA at one of the other McKinsey offices who somehow ended up with a naked guy in his bathroom at a hotel in Canada at 3 a.m.).
I came to India for a friend's wedding and had booked a trip down to Cochin with my younger brother for New Year's. Due to a taxi strike, my brother and I ended up being stranded at the hotel. After finishing lunch one day, my brother decided to go for a swim. I headed back to my room at the separate property to grab a book and change into a swimsuit (about a five minute boat ride away from the hotel). There was another guest on the boat with me and we chatted briefly while we were waiting for the boat. After getting onto the elevator, the guest proceeded to grab me by my sholders and kiss me (it was 2:30 p.m. in the afternoon, so late night alcohol, etc. was NOT a factor). I managed to get off the elevator, push him away and run into the room and called hotel security. Meanwhile, the guest in question proceeded to come to my room and knock on the door.
The hotel was able to identify which guest it was, call the police, and the guest ended up being arrested and supposedly charged with assault.
I understand that a hotel cannot control their guests but that's not an excuse for the following. There were cameras in the elevator that were NOT WORKING. One of them had been completed removed (other elevator; the cable was hanging loose from the ceiling) and in the elevator that I was in, apparently the camera was "pointing in a different direction." I have no idea how that was even possible--it was the style of camera that you see on the ceiling of a casino (encompassed in a plastic circular shape) that cannot be moved without removing the plastic case and I was standing in the middle of the elevator. I am still not sure what the guy at the security desk in the lobby 15 feet away from the elevator was looking at and the hotel never gave me a good explanation. After the guest was arrested and the hotel tried to review the security footage, there was nothing to review...
In addition, I made it clear that I wanted to press charges. At one point, I had gone downstairs to check on the status of the taxi strike and see if there was any way that I could leave the hotel (for obvious reasons), the head of hotel security and the chief of police for either the city of Cochin or the local region indicated that I should come over and talk to them. I sat down with five police officers, etc. while they were drinking coffee. At that time, the head of the security asked me point blank if I would drop charges because the man had already been embarassed enough.
Three weeks after the event, despite repeatedly asking for the copy of the police report while I was at the hotel and attempting to work through Starwood corporate in the US (note: PLEASE DO NOT directly imply that your customer is lying to you in a conversation), I still have not received a copy of the police report. The police report was supposed to be filed with the US embassy to make sure that the case was not dismissed.
In some respects, the hotel did try to handle the situation. My brother and I were moved to a nice room in the main central building and the general manager gave us use of one of the hotel cars the day after so I could just leave (the man's wife was stuck at the hotel and it was extremely uncomfortable for me having all of the hotel employees and a number of the gue...
