Icelandic getaway

Great room, but staff was really mean about how I handled some things on the breakfast buffet. That was my only concern. and the location was kinda out of the way but I really did have a nice time :)

Exactly what we needed

The Capital Inn is in a residential neighborhood 3 stops from the town center on the city bus. The staff was incredibly helpful with orienting us and helping us navigate the city transit options and offering suggestions for places to eat, sites to see, or tours to avoid. They also contacted a car-rental company for us so that we could explore on our own (the best way to see Iceland on your own schedule and far cheaper than the tours for more than one person). Though the room was small, the bed was super comfortable! The restaurant menu was limited, but the food was unexpectedly exceptional and the portions were very generous. I would love to visit Iceland again and I wouldn't hesitate to stay at the Capital Inn.

Dining tip: In Hotel

By the time we arrived from the airport, we didn't feel like going out to find dinner and there aren't many options near the hotel. We thought we'd "settle for" the hotel restaurant, but it turned out to be not only better than expected, but actually really good. So good that we planned it for our last night's dinner.

Super helpful staff

We were very happy with our stay at the Capital-Inn Hotel Reykjavik. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The only downside is that there's no elevator, so if you're on the upper floors it can be a pain hauling heavy luggage. The location was a bit farther from downtown, but this was still a great value. The breakfast buffet was plentiful and good. We would definitely stay there again.

Food is really expensive in Iceland, so if you're on a budget, consider purchasing sandwich ingredients at a grocery or convenience store. Also, many gas stations sell reasonably priced fast food (burgers, hot dogs, etc.).

Horrible experience

I booked this hotel even though I had read some alarming reviews. This place is like a hostel where the only reason for an overnight stay would be the price. But since it's outside of Reykjavik city, you will find same-prices hotels that are much nicer. First of all, the room I was given didn't match the description. The description promised two more beds than what the staff gave us. After much conversation with the rude staff, we were given an "upgrade". This place is not clean! There were puke stains on the bed sheet. Disgusting. The bed mattresses were covered in hair and dust. The bathroom had not been cleaned for months it seemed, and was filthy. On the floor, we saw dead bugs and lots of dirt. One of the staff members was rude, patronizing, giving insults and just not meant to deal with people. The breakfast is of low quality and cheapest brands: toast, two kinds of marmalade, hard boiled eggs, canned tuna, sliced tomato, crushed pineapple from can, butter, sliced cheese, muesli, milk, coffee, cucumber, ham, prunes, old raisins, and coffee. Bottom line: Stay out of there.

Exactly what we needed

Me and my traveling companion stumbled through the door of the Capital Inn 2 hours before our check-in time slightly damp, a bit grumpy, and 24 hours in transit. The staff there double-timed and got our room ready for us early. The room itself was nothing special but it was pretty well spotless and I looked forward to crashing out there every night after a hard evening. The shower and toilet facilities are shared on each floor, and I was slightly worried about this, but the facilities turned out to be cleaner than my bathroom at home. I had no misgivings walking about barefoot in the bathroom and as far as communal bathrooms go, there can be no higher praise. The only minor issue is the sulfurous smell to the shower water which I hear is quite common in the country. Apparently it can be filtered, but by the second day, I didn't even notice it. The drinking water is untainted as far as I could tell. The breakfast they serve is perfectly adequate and, best of all, included in the price of the room. We certainly got our value out of it. All-in-all, this place was the perfect hotel to both begin our day on the right note and close it out in comfort. Come for the price, come back for the service.

For the love of GOD, avoid the taxis. We made the mistake of taking one back to the Capital Inn after a particularly hard night of drinking. It cost us more than that night at the hotel.

go somewhere else

I wish i went somewhere else. I spent several days in Reykjavik, and at the end of each day, I was not glad at the prospect of going back to that place. The place itself is remote, so you have to walk for 40 minutes, or take the bus to and from the city center, which is not fun to do at night. Also annoying was that they charged me for a cup of coffee because it was after 10am. (no coffee makers in the rooms) But the worst thing was staff: They were just rude. I once asked them to wake me up in the morning, and they simply refused (there are no phones in the rooms, so they could not give me a wake-call.) The explanation was that they are an inn, and a hotel. - I don't know how that explains anything. All in all, not a pleasant experience. Find some place else.

Capital Inn

Overall this was a pretty good hotel. The staff is friendly and helpful and the rooms are a good size for travellers on a budget. The hotel is a bit tucked away and you have a good walk ahead of you before you can reach a stop.

Capital Inn

These people took care of everything for us. I had a parking ticket, needed to add days to our rental car, and needed directions everywhere. They took care of everything! From the owner to the cleaning staff, we were taken care of above my expectations. The whole staff is awesome and I will only stay at the Capital Inn when I go to Iceland. It felt like home. Thank you!

Excellent value for the money.

Very kind people. Just 7 minutes drive from downtown. Clean room. One of the nights we had dinner at the hotel and the food was great. Excellent value for money.
