hotel cabin for five days

I stayed at the hotel for five days on my first trip Iceland. I tried to pick a hotel that had a private room and bathroom that was close to downtown. It was clean and orderly. The walk was about 15-20 mins to downtown and I explored several ways of walking to downtown from the hotel, all about the same time. I saw there were many hotels in central downtown but they were very expensive or did not have a private bathroom etc. I realize now that there is central downtown and the rest of downtown. I stayed in the rest of downtown, more of a financial area. Anyway if you don't mind walking on the corniche or exploring it's a great deal and nice hotel. You could also take a taxi or bus but I prefer to walk. The hotel itself was nice, the breakfast buffet was basic, what I had expected, not poor, but could have a few more choices. The showers were small but everything seems to be smaller in Iceland in all the hotels from speaking to other travelers. They were very aggressive about cleaning the rooms every morning, lol. If your out late the previous night, they really want to clean the room every morning and change towels etc. I had to tell them to come back each morning at least twice since I was recovering. The city and its culture, museums, galleries, people, food, churches, architecture, etc. were all great and highly recommend this trip to anyone, I already want to go back and I have never met such nice people. Icelanders are truly the nicest people in the world at all levels, never heard a complaint, bad comment, fight, poor attitude or even saw a policeman at any time. Hope this info helps.

Did the job

We needed a hotel to stay in for one night before traveling north. This hotel appealed because the front desk was there later than many guesthouses and a generous buffet breakfast was included in the rate. Room was clean, though windowless. It's a 10-15 minute walk into the city center, so not ideal if you plan to spend a lot of time there.

single size dorm room

The Hotel Cabin, well where to begin? It's location is OK, a bit off the beaten track, but it's kind of nice to walk into the city, so I didn't mind that too bad. The lobby was OK, service at the bar and tourist shop where one can book tours was pretty spotty - there was no real inclination among the staff to help people. In their defense, usually only one or two people were managing all the posts. The room is where the hotel lost all its luster. For the price, I wasn't expecting fancy at all. A room that was small enough for a woman of 5'8" to be able to touch both walls with arms outstretched was a bit small to be considered suitable for double occupancy. The beds were super narrow. My friend and I are both quite slim (size 0 and 2) and each bed was uncomfortably narrow. When laying down flat, I had about three inches on either side of my body. In the interest of disclosure, I'm the size 2. I cannot imagine a man of any size sleeping in those beds. I whacked my elbow on the small desk between the beds three times. Staying in the room began to feel like an extended game of leap frog. Then there was the bathroom. We visited in winter and found that the shower never got hot. It got tepid and stayed there, but that was it. The shower was actually smaller than the bed, meaning to wash one's underarm, one had to carefully extend her arm straight up over her head. Shaving of the legs required elite yogi status stretching. I had to open the door to bend forward enough to shave my lower legs and then again to straighten up. We made the best of it, as it was pretty funny and it certainly encouraged us to stay out and experience all that Iceland had to offer. If I had to do it again, I'd forego the value and opt for a hotel offering rooms a little less on the rabbit warren scale.

Great value

Great value for a hotel in a capital city! 20 minute walk to the center of town, but easily walkable. Decent breakfast included in the price. Internet is not free though.

Iceland Break

Found hotel great value, clean, food good, buffet evening meal good value approx £7.50 each which includes soft drinks, coffee, soup, salad and one hot food dish, fruit. We were on floor 7 which were the superior rooms and these were bigger rooms with a walk in shower. Only downside would be that there were a lot of school/college students around, if that bothers you, but mainly on lower floors.

Well worth the money.

The room was small and spartan (by American standards) but spotlessly clean. The continental breakfast was adequate, but nothing special. The location was pretty good. I parked my rental car and walked most of the time while I was in Reykjavik. It is a straight shot on route 41 to Keflavik Airport (40 min. drive at 7:30 am traffic). It was well worth the money. I would stay there again.

Would not recommend this

Upon arrival, the front desk staff was not friendly and it took several minutes to get their attention in order to check in. Even for a mom and child traveling, the room was extremely small - barely enough room to put two carry ons and backpacks. When we arrived at our room, there was a sign saying that guests could upgrade however this was not offered at check in. The room appeared as if it had not been vacuumed/cleaned before we checked in. Would definitely not stay here again or recommend it to anyone.

Overall, Good Value

Nothing fancy but clean and convenient. Not a long walk to downtown, 20 minutes maybe. Five minute walk to the pool -- fantastic. Good breakfast, helpful staff. Just be aware that the standard room, "suitable for two people," is barely more than a closet. No way that two people plus luggage will fit comfortably. We upgraded to the next level and that was fine.

"Overbooked" my prepaid room

When I arrived at the hotel I was told that they had "overbooked" my prepaid room. They had a comparable room at a nearby hotel for me. Not what I was wanting to hear after I had been traveling all day. The comparable hotel was ok, but not what I had paid for. Maybe it was an isolated incident, but beware if you book this hotel. You might not actually end up staying there.

Good value

The rooms are quite small, like a cabin in a ship, as the name implies, but everything is neat and clean. It is good value for an inexpensive hotel. It is about a 30 minute walk from " downtown" ( the opera house), and a block from the harbor walk/ bike path. A good included breakfast.
