Shopping tip:
Short walk from hotel
In winter, shops do not open until 10am and close at 6pm. It gets light at 10am and dark between 3:30 to 4pm, so plan accordingly.

Very nice
Wonderful staff. Very accomadating, from getting room ready early -as we flew in at 6:30 a.m., and letting us stay in room later-as our flight was at 5:00 p.m. Staff made reservations for all our side trips and called for our return ride to the airport. Hearty European breakfast provided in adjacent restaurant(Same each day). Nice rooms. Most laid back trip we have ever taken We will go back and stay in this hotel. Plan your side trips after you get there.

Clean scando-styled room, great location
Totally clean, comfortable scandinavian styled room with tv on the wall and windows that actually open! Walking distance to most of what you want to see in the city. The hotel seems to join two buildings with the result that after getting off the elevator on the 4th floor (top floor) we had to climb 16 steps to our room. Could be an issue for some.

Sightseeing tip:
Short walk from hotel
While the desk clerk said she "could" book tours for us, we got much better information, and did our booking, at the tourism office up the street.

Great hotel, great location
My experience at the Hotel Fron was very pleasant. They upgraded us to a small apartment with kitchenette which was very handy to avoid eating out for every meal. The room was clean and new looking, the only downfall was our only windows opened into a foyer rather than outside(201). Other than that I was very pleased with this hotel. The location was perfect, parking on the street was not a problem and free before 10 am and after 6 pm. I will stay here next time I'm in Reykjavik.

If you have a car and want to get out to see the island I suggest that you only stay in reykjavik a couple days and then find hotels along the route you want to explore. Iceland is just too large to use Reykjavik as your home base and expect to see much.

Good value
Well, if you have to be stuck in Iceland because of a volcano (caused apparently by mountain trolls reacting unfavorably to their reduced payments forced by the Icelandic financial crisis) then hanging out at the Hotel Fron in downtown Reykjavik was the place to be. Good, basic, buffet breakfast, clean warm rooms, and reasonable rates. Helpful staff - even let us into our room well before check-in time.

Dining tip:
Short walk from hotel
If eating out gets to be too much ($, calories, salt) there are two local supermarkets. The one nearer the center of town is open 24hrs,(has a sign stating this) but is more expensive. The other (Bonus Supermarket - turn right, or east as you leave the hotel) is about the same distance, less expensive, and more choice.

Wonderful Hotel in Downtown Reykjavik
We had a wonderful experience with the hotel and staff. I had emailed before hand since or flight was getting in at 0630 am, but check in wasn't until 1400 to ask if there was a place we could store our luggage while we explored the city until the room was ready. Management emailed to say that it was fine. When we got there the room was ready so we were able to nap! The room itself was very nice, a big wooden wardrobe with drawers, a safe and hangers. The bed was two twins pushed together, but we didn't mind, with nice warm comforters. Modern decor, a stand up shower, heated towel rack, a kitchenette with wine glasses, cutting knives, utesils, stove, mini fridge, breakfast table, a little elevated reading area by big bright windows! The hotel staff was so nice! They lent us an outlet converter, helped us to book trips to see the Northern Lights, spa trips, departures, even helped make an international call when my bank card stopped working. The breakfast is your standard continental fare, but we ate at the cafes to maximize our Reykjavik experience. Hands down the best in location, service, and amenities for the price (which all depends on what deal you get!)

great downtown location
The hotel accommodations are pretty basic but very adequate. I would recommend a room in the back, off the street side, as it was noisy at night. Breakfast was good!

Great location and good-size room
Unlike most other nonluxury European hotel rooms, our room for two was surprisingly roomy. It came with two twin beds pushed together but also a comfy couch large enough for my daughter to sleep on, plus a mini fridge, a microwave, and even a cooker. The location, right on the main shopping street and just a short walk from the harbor, the duck pond, and scores of restaurants, couldn't be beat. And perhaps best (albeit luckiest) of all, when we arrived at 8:30am, a room was ready for us to check in--we didn't have to wait until the official afternoon check-in time.
