- Hotel Lucky is chateau style family hotel in the 14th district of Budapest on the Pest side. It is situated 4-5 kms from the centre of the town, in the green zone, garden city between the international fairgrounds and the M3 speedway, in the direct vicinity of the thermal open-air bath Paskal.

First time in Budapest
Staff was the best part, polite and helpful. Location good for being distant. Metro close by and a breeze to use, quick ride downtown. Nice big room with very secure lock. Good attention to locking front door of hotel after dark too. Desk clerk on duty 24/7. (Budapest is a safe city anyway.) Unfortunately no washing machine or dryer and sending clothes out rather pricey, although out at 7:00 am and back by mid-afternoon consistently with ironed shirts is pretty good laundry service. I was there eight nights and the room got attention five or six times. Linens not great but adequate, one pillow seemed a bit old. Bring your own washcloth and Kleenex. Breakfast small Hungarian style, I ate at another like it, don't let anyone knock it. Price for this hotel was most reasonable and I have no major complaints. If they put in one or two washers and dryers and improved the linens and maid service a tad they could easily recoup their costs. I'd recommend it.

Service in restaurants is uniformly good in Budapest. While I was in a coffee shop I heard a Hungarian lady telling her American tourist friends that when the service is included on the check (usually 12 %), it goes to the restaurant but when it's left on the table it belongs to the servers. That certainly was consistent with my earlier observation that waiters and waitresses in Budapest seemed greatly pleased by tips of 300 to 500 Forints, ($1.50 to $2.50) left on the table. By the way, Budapest service is in an older style. Even after they pick up the plates they will not automatically bring the check; you have to ask for it. It used to be like that everywhere. In much of Europe you will never be rushed in a restaurant and it's a very nice custom. By the way, the food is good.
