Central comfort comes with quirky modern design and artistic flair

Situated in the heart of historic Budapest, the Hotel President Budapest presents a classical 19th century façade. Once through the doors, soaring marble pillars and marble floors greet visitors, with walls lined with paintings from a local artist, complimented by impressive floral displays. A top floor panoramic terrace offers the opportunities for cocktails at dusk, perhaps followed by local or international cuisine at the Hotel President Budapest's Intermezzo Café and Restaurant. Those in a hurry can even arrive at the hotel's private helipad.

  • Walking distance from many key attractions such as the Opera House, Chain Bridge and Roosevelt Square

Good quality, fair price for a central business hotel

The hotel is very central (a Metro stop is two minutes walk away). It's not a big place, but is smart. The exterior suggests inside will be old world charm, but it is actually quite modern. It's a great business hotel. I had booked a single room - this was narrow, and rather than having a comfy chair or sofa as the hotel photos had suggested, I had twin beds. One of these was under the window so had to be climbed over to look out onto the street for the great views of the ornate buildings opposite. The bed was comfortable with a duvet, but the pillows were quite thin. The air conditioning was not very effective, so I needed to leave the windows open. As it is close to the government area it is reasonably quiet with not much traffic, but the street cleaners came through very early in the morning and were very noisy for a few minutes. The room was clean, the bathroom didn't have a bath but did have a very powerful shower with plenty of hot water. There was a safe in the room, and a stocked mini-bar. There was a kettle, but the coffee sachets were a three-in-one brand (coffee powder, powdered milk and sweetener) to be made up in plastic cups. The breakfast had a reasonable selection, but I didn't eat in the restaurant or use the bar. The spa facilities looked good, but again, not used as there was a daily charge. (Went to the Gellert instead for the experience). The roof top terrace on the 7th+ floor had a good view over to Parliament , but is also used as a helicopter landing pad so is a bit spartan, and only set up for dining/drinks if the weather permits Budapest is well worth a visit - lots to see, and not too busy with tourists in mid-September. It's a good blend of Mittel Europ architecture, some interesting history and sights (Castle, Citadel, the bridges, Parliament, the churches, Margaret Island, the spas, galleries, museums, lots and lots of statues and memorials including the Memento Park with the Communist statues, squares and parks, ornate market halls, and the river of course with its impressive bridges). It's not expensive as capital cities go, and the people are generally friendly. A shabby-chic feel, with graffiti but very little litter and quite a bit of restoration/building projects going on. The area round Parliament in particular is being reworked so the protective fencing means you can't get up close to the Parliament building unless doing the tour.

The bus /metro from the airport to gets you to the hotel in under an hour, for 540 HUF (less than £2) - At the information desk at the airport arrivals area for a transfer ticket, and catch the 200E bus to Kőbánya-Kispest (the bus park and ride terminal - announcement is in English) and then get on the M3 metro straight through to Arany János Utca and it's a two minute walk.

Nothing to write home about.

Some staff rude. Extra fee for swimming pool. Beds not particularly comfortable. Good location. Nice breakfast.
