This hotel is an excellent 4* family run property with a historical character and at an Old Town location that adds to its appeal. The guest should expect to step back in time in an exclusive high quality environment that will satisfy the most demanding guest. Highly recommended (EP 08/07) The entrance is through a small portico that opens to the arched courtyard, lit by 2 medieval lanterns. It is like a doorway to a time machine that will take you back hundreds of years. The hotel is located in the maze of narrow streets that make up the Old City of Rethymno. It was part of an extensive complex of buildings that used to belong to the Dominican Monastery of Santa Maria Magdalena during the town's occupation by the Venetians in the 14th century.

Veneto Exclusive Suites Rooms

Guest Rooms
The junior suites are larger than standard rooms, about 50sqm in size and still have many of the original features restored such as wooden ceilings and stone walls and Venetian arches. Some of them are also maisonette style and have 2 levels. They are expensively decorated with furnishings that match the hotels concept and blend with the historical character. However, there is no lack of modern amenities such as air conditioning, refrigerator, satellite TV and internet connection, while some of the rooms come with a balcony or a terrace. (Due to limited availability, all clients must reconfirm whether they need twin or double bedded rooms prior to departure. The hotel may confirm a double bedded room plus sofa bed as a twin room).

Restaurant
The restaurant and bar is on the ground floor, with tables inside the building but also outside in the patio and close to the large stone staircase leading up to the accommodation area. The hotel has a highly acclaimed restaurant serving predominantly Cretan and Greek dishes (the owner is a member of the Greek Academy of Wine and Taste) and a well stocked 700 year old wine cellar for the connoisseurs.

Great Location if you can book at the right price

Location - ideal for exploring the old town, the harbour and fort, and an easy walk to a quiet sandy beach. A much longer walk to the 'organised beach' which is far nicer but very crowded. The hotel - we were in and out a lot and the hotel was lovely and cool even in the August heat. However, it's tiring walking up and down the steps and stairs if you are on the top floor, as we were. Restaurant as attractive as photos and food was excellent. The breakfast buffet was really nice apart from the orange juice. The rooms were clean and comfortable. We had 109 which had views of the fort and the courtyard. 107 was at the front of the hotel and very dark due to the small windows. In 109, we could get wi-fi but it was unreliable. In 107, there was no connection. Staff were generally pleasant and helpful, especially the lady who laid the breakfast tables and cleaned all our rooms. We loved the town and ate out every evening, except for our first night. There are loads of places to sit and eat or have a drink and we spent a few afternoons at the beach. We travelled across Crete by bus and this was easy - everyone speaks English. Arriving at the town's bus stop was the most difficult bit - you can't get a taxi to the hotel as it's pedestrians or bikes only. It's not a difficult walk and we only had hand luggage but it's something to bear in mind if you arrive with suitcases or have mobility problems - of course, we could have hired a car but as we travelled with grown up children, we used buses without any difficulties. Looking online, there are several hotels like the Veneto and, of course, plenty of other alternatives. We liked the Veneto and our children thought it would have been perfect with 'proper' orange juice and wi-fi in the rooms. Personally, I would be more than happy to return BUT would consider all alternatives first - it's a lovely building and we had no problems with the hotel. In some places, the building would be exceptional but in Rethymno it is one of several.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Tavernas and cafes on the harbour are more expensive than those in the town.
