Affordable and better than a hostel

I needed a place to stay that wasn't expensive, but nicer than a hostel. This was that place. It had a private bath, and the bed was OK for a couple of nights. I wasn't planning on lounging around the hotel during the day, so amenities weren't a big factor in choosing to stay there. The best thing I can say about this hotel is that it was just two blocks from a metro station. The hotel is on the border of a rough-looking part of town, but in Athens, every part of town looks kind of rough! The walk from the hotel to the metro was safe, but I wouldn't venture much past the hotel in the opposite direction. The upside to this type of location was that there were several delicious, affordable cafes and bakery nearby that were not visited by the typical tourist crowd. Its a year later and I'm still talking about that amazing bakery!

Bearable and fine

We paid £130 for three nights for three in a room - you paid for what you got most definitely. The hotel is situated within the taxi's 50€ band from the airport and after a delayed flight this worked out to be the best option for us as it only took about 30 minutes. It is close to Omonoia Square (5 minute walk) but there is not much here just a metro and some shops, but it provides a good central point for following map routes! The room itself had a double bed and a single which were fine for us. A large TV, wardrobe and lots of storage. It also had a door that lead to a balcony that was really hard to lock! Every time you opened the bathroom door it hit the toilet which was loud and annoying! The bathroom itself had dreadful lighting and was small - there was only a bathtub - this meant the shower head was not hanging so you could not stand under it (major downfall for me!!) The bathroom was damp and the shower curtain was dirty and there was a pile of crumbs in the corner. On the second day, I woke for a shower but there was no hot water :( Worst part of the stay! I called down to reception but they just shouted and kept me on hold for half and hour then said it would be sorted in 20 minutes. Had breakfast but it still wasn't sorted after 35 so I went down to talk to the rude receptionist and she told me that the engineer hadn't arrived yet so it was not going to be sorted for a while. I had to go out without a shower, it was horrific but, thankfully, it was hot when we returned to the hotel in the evening!! There was only two plug sockets in the room (and they were hard enough to find!!) but two between three girls is not right really. Breakfast was good - a buffet with the usual cold meat, cheese as well as cereal and some hot foods (alternated between eggs, sausages and pizza) Everything else was pretty average. Oh, there was a hair dryer in the bathroom and free slow wifi! Given I'm normally happy and content if I have a decent bed and shower, i won't stay again because of the cold water incident and that I had to lean over the tub to wash my hair!

Athens Hotel

There is absolutely nothing special about this hotel. The staff were very nice and helpful, and the breakfast was good. The room and bath are small, and we had a triple room. And while the bedding was exceptionally clean, the room not so much. They say they have just refurbished the place, I hate to think what it was like before. We had just one night there and it fit the bill. I wouldn't recommend it and I wouldn't necessarily return. I was able to use my Orbucks in making the reservation and that saved some money.

Not what i thought, but worked out ok

The location of the hotel is well suited to the center of athens, i had a plasant 15 min walk to the main tourist area, However the area itself looks uncared for, and i have to say this did through me the first day,but saying that after a day i was more then happy walking around on my own. The Staff were friendly enough. The Hotel itself, may be small but suited my needs very well, i didnt make it to the resutarnt during my stay as its was only open for a couple of hrs at a time, but seeing as there are lots off food places within walking distance and most are open till very late it wasnt a problem. The rooms are basic (and not like the picture) as i was going on my own, i thought i would treat myself and go for a large (queen) bed. However when i got to the room it turned out to be 2 singles pushed togther. evern with the door to the balcony closed i could still see gaps and it did let a lot of noise in from the street (its a good job i was able to sleep with a fair amount of noise) The TV was basic basic, but i was able to find 3 channels that were in English. The room itself was clean and bright, although there was a hole in the wall were a fixture had been. and one of the doors to the cupboad didnt have a hanlde on it. The Bed itself was rather hard, but again clean, However the pillows were far to hard for my liking (it was more like very dense foam that had no give) and i ended up using the 2nd dovet cover as a pillow. The only other issue i had, when i checked into the room i had two sets of towels, but after the first night i was only left with one set. not a big deal, but i've not stayed anywhere were that has happened before. My overall option of this hotel. If i had stayed in a room like the picture i would have been very happy with my choice, As it was i didnt, and have to say that i do not think this hotel (based on my room) deserved to be at 3 stars, i would say that it is a very good 2 star. yes i would recomened this place to anyone that is happy with the lowwer ratings, i would think about going back here, but in truth i would propably pick a higher quality hotel

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Walk upto the street behind the Monastiraki station (come out of the station and turn right, then take the first right, - its inbetween shops) The first set of restuarnts ont the rights hand side (oposite the shops) had THE BEST food, its slightly more expensive but it was worth it, If you walk a little futher down there are more restuarnts, the food there was ok, but i enyojed sitting there with coffee looking out at the acrpolise
