Snake-view restaurant

Ok, let’s get the title out of the way. The Elliot Hotel is 8 storeys high and is thus a tall building in that part of Gibraltar the swimming pool, restauarant and sunlounge are at the top of the building. One of our interests is birdwatching from the sunlounge we enjoyed looking up with our binoculars at the scores of booted eagles migrating from Africa to Europe. The restaurant has great panoramic views over Algeciras Bay - and also the nearby rooftops. One day we saw a nesting yellow-legged gull on a rooftop, the next day the gull was gone - a check with the binoculars showed instead a curled-up basking snake (by the length, more likely to have been a Lataste’s viper than a horseshoe whip snake) by an empty eggshell. We were at the Elliot Hotel for a two day birthday treat for the wife. The hotel was very comfortable with helpful staff - we had a large well-appointed room )including a Nespresso machine) on the sixth floor on the east side with a good view of the Rock. Any room on the east side should have a good view only a room at the top of the west side (the restaurant side) would probably have a good view. We upgraded to bed and breakfast having seen the restaurant view. The breakfast was OK, but the evening meal was a better standard of food. The main menu is £27 for 2 courses and £33 for 3 courses the set menu is £25 for 3 courses (you must have every course) with about half the choices on the main menu. Food, including tapas, is also served nearly all day on the ground floor verandah our meal there before leaving for the airport (taxi £5.50 to £7) was fine. The hotel is centrally located by the shops - one block above Marks & Spencers - and is handy for the cable car to the top of the Rock and the welcome shade of Alameda Botanical Gardens. Most of the attractions for us were within walking distance, and consider a day rover ticket for the buses (except No 5 to the frontier) at £2.20 per head - odd to hear the locals speaking in Spanish. For a first visit to Gibraltar, the guided tour at £22 per head is prpbably worthwhile for orientation. The hotel certainly worked for us - and we would happily stay there again.

Pricing

The hotel is very clean. Staff are extreamly helpfull and courtious. The only down side is we paid £147.69 per night for a room thinking breakfast would be included in that room rate, breakfast was not included in that rate, but £15 per person per day extra, the breakfast was o k but at that price was not good value for money.

Good Location

It was a pleasant hotel, clean rooms, helpful staff. Typical hotel room with great views over the sea. Nothing that special.

So so

Two problems. For a 4* star hotel, you're charged for internet access. The other problem was the television reception. Although I should have been able to receive all the UK channels as well as GBC and BFBS radio, I was only able to receive four stations and no radio. I mentioned my absence of reception to reception (no pun intended) and reception just shrugged its shoulders and said that's the way it is. Not great if you're staying in and fancy watching a favourite programme. Also not the stuff of a four star rating.

Shopping tip: Short walk from hotel

Dear eboiokers, the word traveller has two 'l's -- 'travellers'. Basic English. You should get it right.

Gorgeous view and A+ Service

The hotel is in a fantastic spot. You can walk to anywhere you need to go. The parking is free! The service from the front desk staff is better than any I have experienced. They went out of their way to minimize wait and share all they know about how to enjoy your stay in Gibraltar. Super friendly and helpful! What else makes the place stand out is #1 the pool has a view of the bay and #2 the room service has a late night menu, so you are never left hungry! What needs work is the breakfast. It is highly publicized, but there not enough tables for everyone. Also, the buffet could use more variety. Overall, I would go back.

Nightlife tip: Not Applicable

The nightlife in early October (still warm) was dismal. Nothing on a Saturday night. A few bars open, but Gibraltar seems to be a day spot only.
