Mercure Hotel & Residenz Berlin Checkpoint Charlie

We often stay at this hotel chain - they do vary greatly. Our experience at this hotel was fantastic - the room was great and for us the location, perfect. The breakfast buffet although pricey when booked at the hotel is over the top great. And if you can book it as a B&B price, reasonable. We went to Berlin mainly to see the museums. As well as being located near two Underground lines - U2 and U6 it was only a 6.5 Euro cab ride to the Museum Island and also the other museums. Wireless internet is pricey, but free in the lobby. But we walked 3 blocks to cafes where it was free. The next time we go to Berlin, we will stay here.

The hotel is centrally located for all the activities we had planned. It was right by, as the name implies, Checkpoint Charlie and all manner of the 'to see' sites of Berlin ie: a section of 'The Wall', Brandenburg Gate, Under Linden Strasse, Third Reich etc etc. It is also just up the road from one of the stops (Checkpoint Charlie) for the multitude of 'hop on, hop off' bus tours. To start though, we were met by Laura at the front counter and she would be how you would best describe as 'the ideal front person for your hotel'. Very bright and friendly, spoke good English and personally guided us to our 'palace of a room'!! Can't say enough about her and this set it up well for a great three days in Berlin. As I said, the room (or apartment) was outstanding. heaps of space, all the facilities (even if you wanted to cook something yourself) and very quiet. Absolutely no complaints here! Surrounding the hotel is a good selection of cafes and restaurants so you can pick and choose depending on your budget. Parking available in their underground facility for 13 Euro per night which seemed standard and certainly a good 'piece of mind' in a big city. The only down side (for us) was the fitness centre (a small stretch of the term) which, considering the size of the hotel, only consisted of treadmill and a 'stepper' in a room which was already hot as it had the sauna next to it and no air con. To use the treadmill you also had to go to reception to pick up the safety cord so you could actually use it. Overall, a very pleasant stay in a quality hotel.

This hotel is well located in the centre (Mitte) of Berlin close to U-Bahn stations. Breakfast was excellent. The only negative is that internet is an additional charge.

Hotel is in nice location near shoping centers, malls, historical places and most importantly near good restaurants. Hotel staff are cordial and internet facility is free on their computer.

I've stayed at many hotels in Berlin and prefer midsize hotels that still offer a good breakfast and a pleasent place to have a drink. This Mercure offers a pleasent open air bar within the walls of the hotel to enjoy a quite drink. It is a short walk from subway and bus service in easy walking distance to the shops and restaurants of Friedrichstrasse. The staff offered excellent service and speak English. My only complaint is commom to most hotels in Germany that will not allow guests coming in on the early flights from the USA to get in their rooms before 3:00pm. This is even the case when it is clear that rooms are available.

Easy walk to subway station, Checkpoint Charlie, and many, many restaurants and cafes. The breakfast here was on par with nicer hotels. The staff were incredibly helpful and patient. The street outside the hotel became a little noisy later in the evening, but the hotel itself was very quiet.
