At the price we stayed here, it
At the price we stayed here, it was excellent value for money. The rooms were wide and very clean. The setup was new. The location is a bit away from center, but still very accessible with trams. I would recommend it.

Good Location
The hotel was great. We were right across from the Tram pickup that takes you all around the city. The rooms were really clean and when we needed help finding different attractions the staff was very helpful in pointing us in the right direction. I would recommend the hotel.

Simple but attractive
This is a simple place to stay that is a very good value for frugal travelers. The room is clean and looks recently remodeled. Bed is comfortable. No frills: internet costs extra (8 Euro for 60 min, 13 Euro and up per day); no A/C and room is hot in summer. The big window opens fully to help cool the room, but then you get traffic and light rail noise, sirens, etc. No toiletries, only a wall-mounted "all over shampoo" dispenser with liquid soap for your hair, body, hands (it works fine, but I still bought some soap). There is a nice bottle of water for you in the room if you want to pay 3,50 Euro. I suggest you use the bottle opener for some beer you get at the supermarket. It is not centrally located. It is located on two big roads, but is not near any transportation hubs. For instance to get to Alexanderplatz you must take 2 trams, or walk a block and then take one tram for about 15 minutes. The ringbahn is about 10 minutes away (by foot, then tram). The verdict: hotel comfort and privacy at hostel price, but off the beaten path.

Shopping tip:
Short walk from hotel
Walk southwest (towards Mitte) on Landsberger Allee for 1.5 long blocks, and there is a small shopping center with a Kaiser (supermarket), Schlecker (like a drugstore but no drugs), a fresh fruit/veg market and a bakery. Cheap eats and supplies.

The Grand City Hotel is a decent
The Grand City Hotel is a decent option if you are looking for basic accommodation while visiting Berlin. It is not very "close to Alexanderplatz," however, being a 10-15 minute tram and 5 minute walk from the Alexanderplatz U/S-Bahn station. The room was basic but clean (be aware that there is no air conditioning) and the staff was friendly (the front desk is handled by the adjacent Holiday Inn staff).

Do ask for a fan if it is hot
Do ask for a fan if it is hot outside! Our room had no air conditioning, and we had to spend one night baking on around +30, fortunately the fan resolved the question afterwards. The hotel is located on a rather quiet residential area, so not much noise around, and supermarkets are close, if needed. Good value for money, even more when we had a real bathtub, that was perfect to relax after walking hours across Berlin!

Helpful Advice
The hotel was excellent but the following advice might be helpful: 1. If you like firm pillows, bring your own; the hotel pillows are like beanbags. 2. the fitness studio is free and you can get the key from reception however there are no dumbbells, barbells, etc. 3. The UK guidebooks we had were useless for public transport systems--just ask reception for a proper map. The tram stop to Alexanderplatz is Hohenschönhauser Str./Weißenseer Weg which is just north of the hotel along Weißenseer Weg. Take an M5 or M6.

Berlin has some of the best museums in the world, and if you plan to visit more than a few, it's cheaper to get a museum pass which will provide access to most of the state museums including those on museumsinsel (museums island).
