Axel Hotel.

The hotel is very nice and comfort. The room was a little small but well equipped. Note, the hotel is 'gay friendly'. It's OK if you know it in advanced.

Sehr schön

Very clean hotel with extremely pleasant and helpful staff. I had never visited Berlin before so I was a bit apprehensive about where to find the nightlife, good restaurants, etc. The front desk staff were so helpful that I was truly able to enjoy myself with no stress about being in a strange city.

Axel Hotel Berlin

Although it took a few minutes to get someone at the reception desk (it was after 9pm when we checked in), the entire experience at the Axel Hotel was fantastic. The hotel is just a block away from the Wittenbergplatz U-bahn station which gets you to all the great sights. The rooms were large for Europe and very stylishly laid out. 6th floor had a fitness center, steam room, dry sauna, and outdoor whirlpool (not hot though and only one section had air bubbles -- weird). There is also an outdoor lounge area on the roof and a bar, but we never saw this bar operating. I can only imagine how much fun this place would have been if there had been more travelers staying there and we had been there on a weekend. I would not recommend this hotel for families with children or for anyone offended by advertisements and art featuring some nudity. This is an adult oriented hotel with a fantastic restaurant (2-for-1 3 course menu dinners on Thursdays!) and in a great area. Would love to stay here again and again.

Two for one "menu" dinners -- a three-course daily special -- on Thursdays. Saved us a bundle and the food was amazing.

There Have to Be Better Places Than This

Yes, it's a gay-oriented hotel, in a gay neighborhood, but I still wouldn't recommend it. Our room was tiny, with no fridge. We later learned there were larger rooms with fridges, for the same price. I guess if you don't know to ask, they stick you in the small one. Service was poor - one day, housekeeping took all our towels, and left none. It took 2 trips to the front desk to get a full set. The next day, were were shorted 2 towels again. The room was poorly laid out - the ludicrously-oversized shower stuck out into the room, taking up valuable floor space. The bed blocked the one window from opening, and had to be moved each time we wanted fresh air. (Fortunately, it was on wheels.) There was minimal shelving, and no drawers. No closet - just a bar with several hangers on one wall. The room was modern, but the whole black-on-black thing looks tacky and worn. Staff ranged from friendly to aloof. They often didn't seem to have even basic info. One staffer I asked was unsure how long I could legally park my car on the street. He said he thought it might be 2 hours. Actually, there's no limit. Given that there's no hotel lot, the staff should have basic info like that. The "hot" tub was barely lukewarm - almost cold - every day. Another guest said his room's deadbolt was broken, and the staff told him they don't fix the deadbolts, because it's too expensive. Another couple said the hotel didn't have their reservation, even tho they had a written confirmation. To call the hotel poorly managed would be an understatement. My advice - find someplace else.

The perfect location in Berlin

I was in Berlin for only 2 nights and the location of this hotel is perfect for access to shopping, the Tiergarden, city bus tours and many of the local gay bars in Berlin. The hotel is very clean and the rooms are very modern and comfortable with plenty of drawer space.

Nightlife tip: Short walk from hotel

Many of the best gay bars in Berlin are located within a few blocks as well as the stores (clothing and book) that cater to gay consumers. The hotel is also very gay friendly.

Looks can very deceiving

The hotel was not in good condition as compared to how it is shown on their website. Very dark corridors, mirrors placed to make it look larger than it is but also making it easy to walk into after checking in after a long flight. Virtually no storage areas for clothing when unpacked! Once small (and it was the largest) cabinet with a hinged door was broken making it wasy to fall off...it was reported to the front desk staff and no one ever came to the room to fix it. Website states LCD TV's in all the rooms; which is fine but they neglect to tell you that if you wish to watch any television, you much pay additinally for it! What? I didn't care for this VERY, VERY small room at all.

Axel Hotel, Berlin, Germany

The location was great; staff were helpful in German and English. Coat hooks and towel hooks would have been very nice and an easy fix. The "business center" was basically a computer in a hallway and often busy. The hotel is in the heart of one of the LGBT areas of the city. [...]

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Buy a "tageskarte" or day-ticket at the U-bahn station a block away. It's 6 euro 50 cents for the ABC zones (all zones) and can be used for any form of transportation all day (until 3 a.m.). If you don't have coins for the machine, buy them at the ticket box from a live person. Don't forget to validate the ticket at the station.

What a WONDERFUL Surprise!

The hotel room was one of the most beautiful rooms that I had ever stayed in when traveling. The morning clerk at the front desk, [...]was wonderfully warm and helpful. The evening front desk clerk, although efficent, was cold and appeared indifferent. The room had a jacuzzi and the sauna on the 6th floor was beautiful. The only disappointment was that the Internet was not included in the room charge and cost 9 Euros per day. In addition, my bill reflected a charge of 9 Euros for the use of the bar in the room and I never used it at all!

Nightlife tip: Short walk from hotel

Plot out the bars that you want to visit BEFORE you arrive. Take a taxi from the airport to the hotel because you can take the "Underground" but it is no easy feat and it took me over two hours when I got lost as train route maps are printed on tiny maps glued to the ceiling of the train where it is illegible. No announcements are made in English and unless you speak German, it all starts to sound alike after awhile. There are also STEEP stairs to climb in some stations and you will be exhausted if you have luggage.
