Hotel Standard Design

the location was great, the staff was excellent the only real problem with this hotel is like in much of old buildings the noise level and the heating or AC doesn't work. you can hear everything on the street. the windows need a lot of work!

Hotel is clean, tidy and ideally situated. A great base for exploring Paris. Some of the rooms are a little small, but with so much to see and do on the doorstep you'll not be spending much time indoors anyway

Stayed last week for three nights. Hotel room was relatively large, warm and comfortable with bathroom inc bath and hairdryer. Ipod docking station and acess to wifi useful. Situated in a lively area, close to all amenities, however street far enough away to be quiet at night. Staff friendly and helpful. Useful to be able to leave luggage at hotel having vacated room. Taxi service to airport reasonable. Would thoroughly recommend and reserve again.

I had an early morning meeting in Paris this morning so I came up from the south the night before. I specifically booked this hotel because it was one block away from where I needed to go for my meeting and the other nearby hotels were out of my price range. I had read a very negative review online from a woman who said that the hotel gave her room away to another guest and shipped her and her traveling companion off to an unknown hotel, refusing to tell them where they were being taken or what area of the city the new hotel was in. I found this disconcerting but wanting the convenience of having a hotel close to my early morning meeting, I booked anyway. Upon my arrival the receptionist curtly and unapologetically informed me that their computer system was "totally blocked" and that my room was mysteriously unavailable and they had booked me a room in another hotel and would be sending me there straight away, that is, unless I wanted to book one of the 300/400 euro palatial suites that was available. I had already paid for the hotel upon reservation [...] and I had chosen the hotel specifically for the location. I explained this to the manager and the two receptionists and they repeatedly shook their heads and told me nothing could be done and that they had no room to give me. I told them I was not leaving until they gave me the room I had reserved and paid for and after a ten-minute stare-down with the manager and the two employees the manager finally made a few clicks on the computer and unhappily handed me my room key. Clearly their computer system was working and clearly my room was available, they simply did not want to give it to me. I'm not sure exactly what kind of a scam they are running - either 1.) They are telling people the rooms they reserved are not available to force people to pay for more expensive rooms, or 2.) They are trying to ship what they think are gullible tourists (who have already paid in full) to a cheaper hotel in a less nice hotel and pocketing the difference. After I had finally obtained my room key, I was treated extremely rudely for the rest of my stay. No "thank you" upon checking out, not even a goodbye. The rooms themselves are fine (though I don't think are worth what they are charging - I've stayed in many Paris hotels and I don't think this is worth the price) and the location is great - but BEWARE of booking with the Standard Design Hotel because it's unclear whether you will even see the inside of one of their rooms or not, or if you will simply be shipped off to a mystery hotel not of your own choosing. This is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE AND UNETHICAL, in any situation, but especially in the hospitality industry, which is supposed to be based upon providing a positive guest experience. As a side note - as a woman traveling alone I find this lack of hospitality and sensitivity particularly abhorrent. I wouldn't even recommend this hotel to my worst enemy.
