Exactly what we needed

We were taking the bus to beauvias, so we wanted a hotel that was clean, quiet, pleasant, and local to the only bus stop for that line in Paris. This hotel was perfect. It was very nice and the room was comfortable. Right next to the metro and an RER stop, a couple blocks from the Arc and close enough to la defense. It is a business district, to be sure, but there are cafés and bakeries nearby. Still very (very) Paris.

The good and the bad of it all

The location of this hotel is excellent. It's located in a wonderful neighborhood, with over 20 cafes within walking distance. It's one block to the main thoroughfare which is directly linked to the Champs Elysee. All of the main attractions such as the Eiffel Tower, the Seine and the Louvre are short cab rides away. Visitors should note however, that if you call a cab to the hotel, the driver starts the meter when is cab is notified, so this may significantly add to the cab-fare. Simpler and more economical is to walk one block to the Boulevard Armee (the main thoroughfare) and simply hail a cab. They are numerous and willing to pick up a fare. The room cleanliness and climate control were all as they should be. The central air worked fine and we were able to keep the temperature down on the hottest late August day. The staff of the hotel were excellent. They all spoke conversational English, and were eager and willing to assist you with planning, advice, or reservations. They couldn't of been better. That's the good news. On the negative side of the ledger were some things inexcusable. Our bed, which was billed as a queen size bed, was merely two smaller beds pushed together. Every night, the beds would move apart, leaving a large and unacceptable gap in the already flimsy mattresses. Sleeping was definitely a problem with this arrangement. That's strike one. Another serious problem was the shower/tub installation. A European avant-garde door of tempered glass allowed one into the tub, but the glass was too short, and didn't close correctly, and with each shower, the marbled bathroom floor became as slick as an ice rink. We wound up using mountains of extra towels to sop up the water, which didn't exactly ingratiate us to the service crew. The hotels efforts to solve the problem proved to be ineffective. That's strike two. In the small room itself (it's a boutique hotel so expect small rooms) the lack of closet and drawer space was a major pitfall. The tiny closet has enough space to hang about a dozen garments, horribly insufficient for shirts, jackets, dresses, pants, etc. We wound up hanging our jackets from the curtain closing hardware and triple hanging shirts and pants. Additionally, there is no chest of drawers, just three tiny shelves in the same tiny closet, so unpacking your suitcase is very user unfriendly. All of this could have been simply taken care of with single piece of furniture. The flat screen TV is smaller than your computer monitor, which a minor consideration since you're in Paris, but some folks like to catch local programming as a way of enhancing their language skill. All of these shortcomings add up to a "no" vote about returning to this hotel.

Try the myriad of cafes within walking distance of the hotel. There is wonderful food everywhere and if your careful, you can keep the bill reasonable.

Bienvenue a Paris!

After I booked my package, all my friends told me I should relocate to the Marais district, as the St. Ferdinand is in more of a business/commercial area. I couldn't get a refund, so I stuck with the hotel--and I'm so glad I did! The staff are incredibly welcoming and accommodating. I initially booked a solo trip, and therefore booked a single room, but then my sister bought a ticket to join me. We arrived at 6:00 a.m. Even though checkin time was supposed to have been 1:00 p.m., the concierge gave us a double room immediately. Breakfast was included with the rate, as well as a welcome drink from the 'honor bar' (which is a small table with four or five bottles of liquor to which guests may help themselves). The room was small but absolutely adorable; the beds were comfortable and gave us a good night's sleep--too good sometimes, actually, as my sister and I slept very late a couple of days. On one of those days, the desk attendant called to ask when would be a good time for housekeeping to clean the room. The night before we left, I had a short chat with another desk attendant, who encouraged me to practice my limited French, and who arranged a very reasonably priced shuttle back to the airport for us. Some people may actually love the location of this hotel, which is the only thing I rated less than perfect here; it is directly in line with the 1 metro line and a straight walk to the Champs-Elysees, including the Arc de Triomphe and the Louvre. The Eiffel Tower is also only a short walk from the hotel. If I were more of a sight-seer and less of a hanger-outer, the location would have been absolutely perfect. In any case, this was my first visit to Paris and it was literally perfect, thanks in part to the hotel and its warm and welcoming staff.

Shopping tip: Not Applicable

Just a little tip: both my sister and I were told that we could use our credit cards 'everywhere,' but that wasn't exactly true. The taxi driver at the airport took me to an ATM to get cash to pay him, and some of the Metro stops do not accept American credit cards, apparently because European cards have a microchip that the machines read, and U.S. credit cards do not have those. So be sure to have some Euros on hand in case your card is not accepted. Also, it rained every single day we were there, so make sure to bring an umbrella!

Great Service & Cozy room

We took a two week euro trip. Stayed in four hotels. This was our favorite. The staff is extremely friendly, they will speak french to you slowly and will continue until you get it. They will fall back to english if you are really lost but that won't help you once you go out :D. Breakfast was nice, just get there before 10am because pickings get slim. Great location, across the street from a market where you can get anything you need including beer for a couple euros. two Great restaurants, once down the street the other near the bus station which i recommend to anyone. they serve steak & frits, thats it. but it was wonderful. Rooms are typical euro rooms so space is limited. but it is cozy. only draw back was there was not a fridge otherwise it was awesome. will book again next time in paris without a doubt.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Towards the turn about there is a restaurant that is great and also the street behind at the end is an extremely good restaurant. Two people w/ bottle of wine, dinner and two deserts came to roughly 85 euro.

Just a few minutes walk from Porte

Just a few minutes walk from Porte Maillot, very handy for the bus to Beauvais if you are flying Ryanair. Metro station very handy as well, entry via Avenue de la Grande Armee just round the corner from the hotel. Absolutely no complaints about this hotel, service from the reception staff was fantastic.
