Not as expected...

Our first impression on approach to this hotel was the graphitti spray painted on the wall below the marque... not a very favorable first look. The lobby and staff were nice as well as the halls. The room itself was drab and, while clean, could really use a lot of updating. The furniture and walls were scuffed up and worn. The room was simple and nothing spectacular. I'd rate it only 2 to 2-1/2 stars. There were bathrobes in the room and no reason to really wear them. The view was of construction on the train tracks and more graphitti. We could see the Eiffel tower from our room which was a plus. Breakfast seemed overpriced and room service couldn't even send us a pot of coffee when ordered in the morning. We ordered a hot pot of coffee and someone showed up at the door with a styrofoam cup full of instant coffee and powdered milk with the expectation for us to use the hotpot in the room. That was not why we ordered "Room Service". The room service coffee was inconsistent from day-to-day when we did eventually get coffee. The first day we finally received a hot pot of coffee. On day two after talking to several people we received coffee and a couple of vending machine muffins. I tried to speak French as much as possible but couldn't get the point across and there were few english speaking people on the staff to supplement. The bar was never open unless you asked a front desk clerk to come and help you. The room had A/C that barely cooled the room. Overall, we were very disappointed by the stay and left a day early.

staff is nice , very helpful . you are next to the Metro station and there is a market on Wednesday and Sunday of each week so you can buy fresh organic fruits , breads , flowers etc... the hotel gives you Evian water daily and coffee , tea bags you can use . the inconvenience is they have one elevator for the whole hotel , otherwise ,it is a great hotel .

Perfectly Adequate

Is this a 4 star hotel? Not by any means. However the staff was courteous, the bed was comfortable enough, the room was small but clean (but had stained, peeling paper), and we had a view of the Eiffel Tower from our bedroom window. One night here was fine but I would've been really upset if I was spending our whole trip here.

Not bad, expected more from 4 star hotel

We had a view of the Eiffel Tower from our room which was amazing. Rooms were extremely small, bathroom shower did not have a curtain so water gets everywhere when you shower. Never saw anyone in the hotel bar, employee or customer.

Nightlife tip: Long walk from hotel

Latin quarter seems to be where all the night life is, not so much near this hotel. Quite a long walk to get there

Paris is love

Hotel is a perfect location to the Metro...across the street. Take it & you can get to wherever you chose! Quaint little cafes around the area & walking distance to the Eiffel Tower. Can't get better than that! Staff was helpful when necessary & hotel is average. If all you're going to do is sleep & shower & enjoy all Paris has to offer, than the hotel is just fine.

too small to be comfortable

for first timers we will not recommend this hotel. we were very excited to finally visit paris. the city of romance and good food. well were we wrong! kicker was the room. we ordered a superior room what was 30 dollar more a night than the classic room. it was approx. 9 by 8 feet. the bathroom was clean and a nice size. we asked to show us the classic room and that was even smaller. i would have much rather ordered the smaller room than i would have not been so disappointet. i am originally from europe and i know small but this was too small for comfort. the location was okay and we did a lot of walking. we saw everything so that we don't have to come back to paris. service in paris is terrible people are not friendly and nobody wants to explain anything. we tried to find out how to rent a bike and not even the hotel stuff wanted to help. in the same trip we also went to amsterdam and germany and we had a much better time. if anybody wants to listen europe is so beautiful and people are so nice but not in paris. we payed so much money for just a few days and we did not get what we hoped for.

Overrated

My husband and I were in Paris for one day following a very enjoyable five day visit to Lyon, France. We choose to stay in the Hotel Mercure because of its close proximity to the tourist attractions [...]. Immediately upon exiting the cab in front of the hotel, I knew we had been duped. The hotel exterior in no way resembled the sexy, sleek images [...]. That was only the beginning of the most horrible hotel stay of my lifetime. The room, which was somewhat small, was very outdated. The bed coverings were below standard, the television volume could not be adjusted above low, and the air conditioner was out of commission. The outside temperature hovered around 85 degrees F which probably meant that the temperature in the room was at least 95 degrees. When I reported to the front desk clerk that our air conditioner was not working, I was told that our they were aware of that fact and that it had been out of service for about three days. Also, the clerk noted that the repair person would not be there for another couple of days. [...] we had to spend the night in this horrible room. In total, we probably slept 4 to 5 hours. I was never more eager to see daylight and get off to the airport. This is the worst hotel stay I have ever had. The only good thing about the hotel was its location directly across the street from a metro station. My suggestion is to avoid this hotel. If ever in Lyon, try the Hotel Sofitel.
