Superior Service

On a whole, the Hotel Excelsior Nice is just fair, but the service was outstanding. To begin, the rooms are small and a little shabby...kind of typical for a 3-star hotel in Europe, really. Another complaint was that our room was on the first floor near the street, so you could hear all the outside noise - including trash collectors at 2AM. At the time we stayed there, though, there were renovations going on, so the comfort and cleanliness may improve after those are complete. The building also has a lot of character - our room had high ceilings with the huge french doors to a little balcony. We would stay there again if only for the service we received. Everyone was exceptionally friendly and helpful. It was also off the beaten path, but not too far from the beach and some good restaurants/entertainment.

Nice location but old & noisy

You can even hear your next door neighbour coughing. I visited the hotel during its refurbishment & it was a bit noisy. The Staff are very friendly & helpful. Its vey near to everywhere but its no value for money. You can hear the doors slammed everttime.

Good for short stay

Good hotel to stay at if you need one very close to train station and within walking distance of beach area. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast is not worth the extra money.

Good location

The staffs at this hotel were very good, especially if you want to find out a good restaurant nearby. Speaking of the restaurant, it is only 17 euros for 3 courses and food was delightful. The restaurant is slow but the quality is fantastic. I think it is called 'Nice' something, I can't remember so ask the hotel staff. The location was perfect for the train station, so easy to get from the airport on bus 99 to the train station and 3 minutes walk from there. Overall, the hotel was good. My only suggestion for the hotel is to tell the housekeeping folks to not be so loud in the morning as some of us like to sleep in. Also, replace shampoo and soap each day as we had to use 2 bottles for 4 nights. Just a suggestion.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Great local and authentic french restaurant at 17 euros for 3 course meal. Better to make a reservation if you want to sit outside, otherwise take your chance like us and it was fine still. Quite a few Vietnamese restaurants in the area, but to be honest, I think they're all mediocre.

Not as reported

First trip to France. When we first checked in there was no hot water and could not turn on the air conditioner or fan. When i confronted the front desk about both i was told that he would look into the hot water problem but that they do not have the A/C turned on nor fans to the A/C because it is not the season for it. This was May 6-8. Excuse me but during the daytime it does get warm in room. We got hot water after 2 hours of waiting. To the room itself was very small. We had a street side room. Very noisy at night. We had to wear ear plugs to sleep. Did not know we could book a garden side room on line because there was no choice for either when we booked. If you can make sure you get courtyard/garden side room. Don't bother with the airport shuttle as they would charge you over 25 euros. The reason we booked at this location was because of location one block from the train and bus station. 4 euro per/person to airport and it runs on the half hour. We were within walking distance of good restaurants and 12 min from beach. Don't bother with the breakfast buffet as they charge you and there are so many other options within a few minutes walk. Also for those on a tight budget there is a small grocery store about 1-2 blocks away where you can get plenty of goodies for cheap and the bottled water is only 0.24 euros as opposed to the vending machine charging you 2.50 euros. Overall our experience of Nice was very good and by far out weighed any of the negatives that we incurred. If you book here just realize these adjustments needed.

small grocery store around the corner that is well priced. dozens of restaurants within a short walking distance to choose from so be pickey. Use the bus #99 that is next to train station for your airport shuttle 4 euros per/person

Awesome trip on a budget

It was my first time in Nice and I could not have been happier. The hotel is your average 3 stars European hotel, just as expected. Rooms are small, but clean, hot shower, cable TV, daily room service.. etc. Few things that annoyed me: there is no free wi-fi (you have to sign up with 'Orange' at the rate of 10 Euros for 24h.), I did not realized that breakfast is not free ( I had to pay about 12 Euros before I checked out). Don't bother with breakfast, few good coffee shops just a block away. That's about all the negative things that I can remember. On the other hand, the main reason to stay in this place is location. It is 2 minutes walk from the Nice-Ville central train station. From there you can take 15 minutes and 3.60 Euro trip to Monte Carlo, 6 Euros trip to Cannes. When you arrive no need to pay for a cab, you can take Bus 99 almost straight to the front door for only 4 Euros. Few minutes walk will take you to Tram Stop. For 1 Euro you can ride from one end of the Nice to another. Ocean front and the beeches are only short 10 minutes walk away, shopping center even less. Most of the stuff in the hotel speaks good English and are very helpful. Bottom line, I'm very pleased with my trip regardless of how little money it cost me.

I could live here!!!!

The room was exactly what I would expect from France. So Charming!!! It was an easy walk to everything including the train station. The staff was helpful and friendly. They had an elevator which not all of the traditional building have. That was a real plus since we were on the third floor. Good size individual bathroom. If we go back to Nice I will stay there. The only suggestion would to get new, nicer bed spreads.

A little history

A nice little room, the bathroom was recently re-furbished and was nicely tiled. The beds were firm and the room was quite small but most are if you don't want to pay a lot. The noise from the street wasn't too bad with the windows closed but it is still a city where people live and work so you should expect cars and street noise. The hotel played a part in history and was occupied by the Germans during WWII. The is a small monument in the street describing it's role.

Very nice hotel, despite the renovation

Very nice hotel, despite the renovation going on outside. Two minute walk from the railway station where the airport bus drops off, ten minute walk down to the promenade and the sea, little grocers shop a couple of blocks down and the main shopping area only a stroll away. Nice bathroom and decor better than most.
