perfect location

We arrived in Carcassonne to explore the fortified walled old town and the Mercure was within 5 minutes walking distance from the entrance. Very convenient and the facility and staff were absolutely wonderful. Only downside was eating in the restaurant for dinner. Not enough staff to cover which meant that my husband's dinner was overdone and all dinners were cool and not hot when they finally arrived at our table. I would definitely recommend this establishment to anyone traveling to Carcassonne.

A good European hotel

Had an excellent dinner, 3/5 stars. Reception staff excellent, location great. Free parking in a dense vehicle/pay to park zone. Should have spent 2 nights in order to see the medieval city.

Wonderful heated floors

After reading Kate Moss' novel Labyrinth I had been wanting to visit Carcassonne and see the area for myself. First off -- no real easy way to get there -- I took the TGV from Paris to Montepellier and then the local train to Carcassonne. It was New Year's Day and I thought it would be an easy travel day -- wrong -- lots of hungover people. I planned my trip for 3 days but in reality, without a car, 2 days would have been plenty. The Cite itself is very interesting if you are interested in history and architecture. My traveling companion was interested in shopping. Unless you are shopping for plastic swords or shields you aren't going to find any Chanel boutiques are Hugo Boss in Carcassonne. Need I say anything else? The hotel is right on the side of the hill leading up to the Cite. Part of the floors in the room were heated granite tiles and the other part was carpet. In January I had to sleep with the window open because the room was so warm -- that is not a complaint as I usually sleep with the window open at home. My room was the standard room -- plenty of space for myself and frankly, are you going to see the sights or are you going to see the hotel room? The staff was extremely courteous -- always offering coffee or a drink. We did not eat breakfast at the hotel because my travel companion thought it was too high priced (8-13 euros) but after tramping around the Cite looking at menus, the hotel prices looked darn good to me.

Time-saving tip: Not Applicable

In France most hotels do not provide wash cloths with the towel service. Wash cloths are considered a "personal" item and should be brought with you.

Fantastic

The hotel is really close to the Cite. In addition, it is also close to the airport shuttle pick up point, which is very convenient, since shuttles go to the airport just in time for your flight. Although I was early for the official check-in, the receptionist made it possible for me to move into my room at once - wonderful, as I had to wake up at 4 am for my flight there and really needed some rest upon arrival. I ended up staying alone in Privilege Double (the one with sofa-bed) room. I tried to catch a glimpse of standard rooms, from what I could see, all rooms are furnished and cleaned to the same standard - the furniture is modern and pleasing to the eye (at leat in my view), and my bathroom was spotless and perfect, with double showers, huge and deep bath tub – much better than at home. :) For me personally, this hotel was a much-wanted relief from my own rented apartment. This is actually a wonder, as hotels usually make me want to go back home. I have notices that some booking sites feature outdated pictures of the hotel, with scary floral duvet covers and floral pattern carpets – that's all is probably in the past, as the hotel is very modern now (or at least the parts of it which I have seen). As far as I understand the hotel layout, many of the privilege rooms face the pool, which is good if you are on the first floor, as you can access the pool via the french window in your room without the need to travel around the corridors. The drawback is of course the amount of noise in sunny weather. Other than that, the overall noise level in the hotel is minimal. So far, this is the best and noise-freest hotel I've ever stayed in. The buffet breakfast was alright, everything fresh and tasty, although the price is quite expensive and if I visit next time, I'll really grab a sandwich or get some crepes in the Cite itself. If you are travelling solo - grab your coffee in the room for free and go for a snack in Cite. :) But, of course, the convenience of breakfast in the hotel and ability to choose might be worth the price. I have also noticed that staff wasn't to eager to replace the missing food, so come early if you want to taste everything (cheeses are usually the first to go :) ) Overall, I would recommend this hotel, would also stay there again if I have to visit Carcassonne once more.

Good experience overall

The location of the hotel is perfect, the rooms are small but spotless and more than adequate with great bathrooms. Its a "no frills" hotel, great breakfast & dining room, with a laid back atmosphere which is good but no one ever asked us at any stage during our 4 days stay if we were happy, or liked it, or needed anything. When we were checking out, they just took the keys off us and moved on to the next person as if we were on a conveyor belt, a bit odd and unfriendly but otherwise a great hotel, at a good price! I would recommend it!

Sightseeing tip: Long walk from hotel

Carcasssonnes old medieval city is smaller than I thought it would be so we had covered everything in one day. I would recommend getting the No 4 bus to the new city of Carcassonne, a few mins bus journey, but an hours walk. This is a good place, good for shopping, a great weekend fruit market, and feels more French and continental, whereas the old city is very commercial and touristy full of souvenir shops.
