Missed the mark
Family and friends met in Bordeaux for 2 days and stayed at the Pullman. We booked 2 rooms for 2 nights with the understanding that airport shuttle service was available. The shuttle service appeared to be a myth, as it was not available for either party when it was time to go to the airport-necessitating booking expensive taxi rides. We also booked at the hotel thinking that it was a bit closer to the airport then it was-so, we ended up neither close to the airport , or city center. Altho the showers were great, we missed the fact that there were no tubs in the rooms-something that one of our elderly members needed. I've never stayed at a hotel that didn't have a gift shop. No place to browse for magazines, snacks, etc. The one restaurant on the premises had a menu that was very creative-too creative to eat there twice. The menu was too contrived and fanciful, and the food not great. We elected to walk down the road to a neighborhood grill for our next meal. The staff was polite, accomodating, and very helpful. The hotel itself was clean and modern, but located in what appears to be an upcoming conferance center/business park. On the surface, a really sharp hotel lacking basic amenities such as options to dine, a gift shop, and easy transportation options.

Pullman Bordeaux
The restaurant was excellent, but the rooms appeared more like college dormitory rooms than a 4 star hotel. This hotel should be rated 3 star instead of 4 star.

Nice enough but needs more business
The hotel, as it says, is "ex" Sofitel. Some of the comments on various sites refer to it in its Sofitel label, some to it under the Pullman flag. They were mixed reviews. However, as of September 2009, what follows are hopefully useful comments. We had been to Bordeaux on a cruise some years ago and my wife, in particular, loved the main shopping district. We thought it would be interesting to go back for a longer stay. One of the things I've learned over the years is that European hotels range greatly in guality and cost - and not necessarily in that relationship of one to the other. We've stayed in Sofitels and found them predictably good. The price (in the package) for the hotel seemed very good relative to other Bordeaux properties, particularly downtown. The offset was that the location was "out there" - we don't drive in Europe. I presumed, as it turned out rightly, that public transport would solve the problem. In fact it did. Bordeaux has a wonderful tram/bus system that makes it easy to get from where the hotel is (an exposition center) downtown in about 20 minutes (our average). Also very economical (1.4 euro per the bus/tram trip). I would also add that taxis are both rare and rarely priced in Bordeaux - 40 euro to and from the airport to this location - probably more downtown with the congestion. Net, location wasn't optimal but then again the tradeoff is price for a 4 star hotel. The hotel itself is very nicely done contemporary and as we like that from we were very happy with it. The room (lake facing "deluxe") was very pleasant if small with a double bed. Shower, not bath, which is fine for us. What we enjoyed most was the restaurant. Very good food at prices (for a 3 course meal - typical) as good or better than what we saw on the streets downtown. Service was good although, given that we don't speak French, it took a bit to get clarity in what we wanted. Of the five nights we were there we ate in the hotel three and enjoyed them all. One reason of course we ate there three nights is that competition in the area is limited and once you're back to the hotel you're pretty much there for the evening (the buses stop running sometime after 9PM). We hope there are some times when the hotel is busy - if it was better than 10% occupied when we were there it would suprise us. A result is that staffing is limited and, particularly in the restaurant, unable to overcome the boredom of 3-4 tables occupied. Overall, a nice place at a good price (in our measure) that represents a tradeoff of location. While it is no negative on the hotel's quality, another time we'll stay downtown if only to see the city at night.

In Hotel
Very nice fixed price menu that varies some during the week. Other hotels in the complex (Accor variety) have in general 2 star feel and restaurants to match. Other than in hotel, good luck finding anything.
