A charming 19th century timbered former hunting lodge on the edge of Fontainebleau forest, Hotellerie du Bas-Breau was a favourite haunt of Robert Louis Stevenson. Walk into Barbizon and visit the inn (now a museum) and studios where the 19th century painters Corot, Rousseau and Millet established the Barbizon school. Then, take the painters trail through the forest with its huge rocks, ponds and constantly changing colours. Return for a meal in the restaurant to enjoy seasonal game sourced from the forest.
