Fantastic for the Pyramids

We booked into this hotel for two nights so that we could have a lazy day sleeping, hanging out by the pool and using the spa following an overnight flight, followed by a day at the Pyramids. For these activities it is perfect. The Pyramids are approximately 1.5km away so perfectly possible to walk, or alternatively the cab is very cheap. I would not, however, suggest using it as a location for visiting downtown Cairo since it is a long and fairly arduous cab ride away. We knew this and had booked a different downtown hotel for the remainder of the stay. Facilities are clean and fresh, the rooms all open onto lovely landscaped grounds and there is a good choice of fair to middling food for breakfast. Minor downsides would be it is unsuitable for visiting downtown Cairo, it is on a busy road, and there are only a few restaurants other than those in the hotel itself within walking distance. However overall I think the hotel was good.

Mercure cairo

I have stayed at this hotel 3 years ago when it was a Sofitel. Everything is pretty much the same including the wonderful staff, which is one of the main reasons I choose to return. The view of the pyramids is incrediable . I think the only other hotel with a closer view is the Mena House which is very expensive. The hotel is walking distance to the pyramids. Room service is a good value with good food, but did not have a great dinner on the roof top deck. The hotel is alittle worn and showing its age but I think due to the lack of tourists in past 2 years there isnt money anywhere in the country to spiff things up as they are all just trying to get along.

Sofitel (Mercure) Giza

It's pretty close to the pyramids, if you don't mind a little exercise, you can walk. Nice pool and interior as well.

Sofitel

Very unprofessional front desk staff. Great food at restaurant. Room was average, very clean, but nothing toi rave about. This place is a classy dump, Le Meridien across the street is a lot better...

Time-saving tip: Not Applicable

Hire a driver from the hotel. They will take you to every site in Giza and/or Cairo in a air conditioned modern vehicle. The price is very cheap and well worth it becuase you can fit so much into one day with a knowlegable driver.

Perfect location for visiting pyramids

The Hotel is very nice and clean. Pools are great with lots of space around, playground, nice pool cafe with great food/drinks. Deck and pool has a perfect view to the pyramids. Rooms are huge with big balcony, fridge, excellent bathroom, you feel like home. The hotel is in walking distance to the pyramids and other restaurants, supermarkets, also for the sound&Light show at the Sphinx in the evening. There are always local taxis waiting outside the hotel if you want to drive into Cairo city, much cheaper than the 'friends' from the hotel and Hertz company inside the hotel. Perfect stay to relax and see all the attractions and have a comfortable hotel. Best choice, great value for money !!!

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Don't use the taxi service from the hotel. They charge you 5 times the normal price and also drop you off at places with horse and camel ride tours run by their mates even though you asked them to bring you to the main entrance of the pyramids. They also lie to you that you can't go there on you own and it is 8km walking trough the desert, which was not true. Pyramids are 10mins walking from the hotel or take a taxi from OUTSIDE the hotel.

Nice hotel great location

The location of the hotel was close to the pyramids the rooms were a little tired but clean (there was water leaking out of the walls and getting the carpet wet. I told the people at the front desk but they just shrugged it off It really was not that big of deal !) The hotel staff were very nice. The restaurant and the bar were well run. The city of Cairo is a very dirty and crowded town (cairo makes tijuana look like a health spa) and I would certainly never go back. I have seen the pyramids and it's over. But the hotel experience itself was good.

The hotel 'Sofitel Le Sphinx Cairo, El Giza, Egypt' is in a good location, within sight and a mile or two of the major pyramids, but they lack some basic amenities, as well as basic quality and service standards. No bottled water in the rooms despite signs saying the tap water should not be drank. - Smoking is allowed in the restaurant / breakfast area as well as throughout the reception area, so no getting away from it. - There are minibars in each room but, I was told, none of them have anything in them.
