30 Years Later
My 1st hotel stay in the Dominican Republic was over 30 years ago in the Hotel Santo Domingo. Then, the Hotel was brand new and I remember it as the perfect hotel. Since then, I've lived in the Dominican Republic, worked for the Dominican Central Bank, married a Dominican and had frequent opportunities to return to Santo Domingo (the city). But I had never returned to the Hotel Santo Domingo, until now. I was vacationing in Puerto Plata with my wife and a friend of hers who had never been in the Dominican Republic, so we took the opportunity to drive down to Santo Domingo and show her the sites. I booked 2 days for us at the Hotel Santo Domingo for nostalgic reasons -- I wanted to relive those days 30 years ago when I 1st arrived in the country. Boy, was that a mistake. While the hotel looks good on the surface, the whole place reeks of mold and the air conditioning was operating at just about the minimum possible for tropical survival. Whiel the employees were all good-natured and relatively efficient, the amenities were 3rd class. We had worn, torn towels in our bathroom and shampoo that just didn't lather up. Overall shoddy quality. The room was spacious and decorated nicely, but bery poorly laid out. For instance, the big comfortable chair that you find in most hotel rooms didn't have a lamp next to it. Maybe that was a good thing, because many of the lamps that were in the room didn't seem to work or had electrical shorts. So, 30 years later, my nostalgia wasn;'t enough to overcome the conidtions to which this once excellent hotel had fallen. Worse, they charged me and arm and leg for it.

I went to this hotel and this is truly a beautiful hotel..until you enter a guest room..They are soo old and outdated..AWFUL.Poor lighting, carpet is terrible, everything old and run down. The amenities are great,The staff..not so bi-lingual..beautiful facade, rooms are far from pictures, nothing like the pics.Depressing and scary.

As other have already reviewed
The Hotel is a little old, all the ice machine where out and I had to make daily runs to the bar to get ice. My bed comfortable and wireless and tv where fine but there was a stain in the middle of the floor that could have been cleaned. One thing you need to be aware of in the city, people honk their horns as part of the driving process.. so if you are street side, you are going to hear that until 11 or 12 at night. I switched rooms after the first night ..
