Simply said.... HORRIBLE

I had my thoughts regarding hotels in the malecon area since I know Santo Domingo very well, all my thoughts were confirmed when I stayed at the Melia. It was simply a nightmare! I just can say if you like a quiet and safe place this is not the place to go. I can sleep even in a train station and it was 5 am when I was able to fall asleep. The standard room is awful, small and stuffy. The linens are old, worn out and felt disgusting. This was the noisiest hotel I had ever stayed in (not even NYC). Moreover the Malecon is not a safe area in Santo Domingo. If you look for quiet, safety and great service I would recommend "Occidental Embajador" it is OLD but the crowd is very different and it's located in a very exclusive area in the city and the staffs are respectful and professionals. In resume Melia the worst ever.

Melia Santo Domingo Very Disappointing!!

The hotel appears to be very nice[...]When I saw the little hole I with a view of an AC RM#309 and extremely dirty I was disappointed. I was even more disappointed when I asked if they can swith my room to a cleaner room out of courtesy that I am in the US Military and thier response was they do not honor miltary courtesy. Both the staff and the type of room I was given was not one of a Luxurious hotel as they advertise!! Very Disappointed!!!!

WORST EXPERIENCE EVER

This was the worst experience we had going on vacation. The hotel was in the process of going through renovations, we arrived late to the hotel on thanksgiving day approximately 6 a.m. then construction started at 9 a.m. We went to the front desk to complain they said there is nothing that could be done, since we booked through [...] not them directlu. We attempted to make the best of the situation, by trying to relax in our room, but the entire wall of room # 309 was fulled of mildew/mole. That cause us to start coughing, we went to the front desk to complain they mentioned that we could move us to another room, #323 which was worst believe it or not... the mole in this room was extremely bad now that is 2 room changes in less then 8 hours. I requested for at least a room upgrade they mention there were none available in the dulex package only excutive suites. The rate in the excutive suites were going for an additional $200, to make matters worst those were the floors with the most construction. I would like [...] to reimburse me the hotel fee, by late evening we just checked out of the hotel and booked to another hotel. We have our bill to the other hotel, since we were not made aware that this hotel is under going renovations, its only right to reimburse us for at least our stay in the other hotel we book. This was our anniversary we tried to celebrate but it was ruin.

Don't stay at the Melia

We stayed one night and didn't have a good experience. Two of the hotel's three elevators didn't work but the hotel didn't put any signs or anything to let the guest know about this. In fact, guests would go in the elevator only to find out the doors would only half open at their floor. The elevators and the rooms are outdated and therefore need upgrades. Further, when we tried to get a taxi to a nearby restaurant the hotel's taxi service wanted to charge $20. The restaurant was within walking distance of the hotel! However, the hotel transportation people wouldn't admit this. A shame as we indeed walked three blocks to the restaurant which was in a nice neighborhood. In our case, the Melia didn't have their guests best interest in mind. On the contrary, it seemed business as usual to take advantage of tourists.

Bad place and waste of Money

The staff at hotel are only for making money by offering Taxi of 10Dollar to go to Zonal colonya which is 10minutes walk or 1.50Dollar taxi fare. Room is not even with a bottle of water. Next hotel intercontinental is very good compared to Melia. No site seeing tours , staff cannot guide you about the toursit locations . Very bad and waste of time going to Melia.

not satisfied

I can not think of a worst room I could possible get. I have stayed in many different hotels in Santo Domingo and by far this room was the worst one ever. I think they leave this type of room for people that gets package deal. The room was next to the elevator and it had a window that faced the glass roof of the lobby. The security at this hotel is ridiculous you can not bring people up to your room, two of my friends picked me up at the airport and I was not allowed to invite them up, if you are staying on the third floor or any floor that is the only floor you room key will let you get to or the public places like the pool or the business center.

Vacation - Melia Hotel August 2010

I would not recommend the Melia Hotel unless you understand and speak Spanish Fluently. They don't understand what your asking - just grin, and whatever you ask for you get the opposite. Theirs a local Bar in the neighborhood that makes consistent noise (Loud Music) early afternoon- through 5:00 AM. Good Price for a 1 or two day stay. Staff courteous but without a clue of hospitality - due to the culture. Don't attempt to bring anyone with you if the their not a registered guest. They would not let non-guest to dine, or go to the casino unless your are a guest. Can you imagine inviting your relative (Local Resident) to have diner at the Melia and then told they can't come in because their not registered. Note: This rule only applies to People of Color including their own local residents and that's the truth. Very sad how they treat their own kind. If your curious then go their and you judge for yourself. Keith & Doreen, USA. August 2010.

Rent your own car, get a map and go for it. Your better off, unless you want to get ripped off. Car rentals are costly, above average because of the Government Taxes.
