Let Down

I've stayed at the Melia Hotel before and loved it, so i decided to go back. I choose the deluxe/ superior room and it was NOT WORTH the extra money, the regular standard rooms weer better. They had a better view and were more spacious. I was disappointed with this stay at the Melia. :(

Good for business, not for tourism

Good: very nice room, nice view, nice pool. I was afraid of the charge for the WiFi but it turned out to be reasonable (USD 5.80/day) and it was a fast connection which worked in the room. Not so good: hotel security is very scary and they stand by the elevator and make you feel uneasy when you enter the hotel, especially if you are bringing guests. I had to wait 2 hours to check in and get my room, although to be fair I arrived before the check in time. Not too much to do near the Malecon unless you have a tour guide or someone local to drive you around. If I go back, I will stay in the colonial city or on Churchill Av near the malls.

Shopping tip: Short drive from hotel

Go to Churchhill Av. for Blue Mall and Acropolis Mall, and several nice supermarkets to buy alcohol, water, snacks, etc. You have to take a taxi, it's much too far to walk.

Good hotel

This is a pretty good hotel overall in terms of service and maintenance. Very helpful and friendly staff. The woman in the business center was particularly helpful when I was having some computer problems. The wireless internet service in room was perfect and reasonably priced. The quality of the food in the Casabe (?) restaurant was very good and service was great, prompt and friendly. The only minor annoyances were: 1) the thermostat did not seem to work - it kept the room at 19C all the time, even when I turned it up to 24. The man that came to look at it just turned it up to 30 and said there, it will be warmer now, as if I didn't know how to turn it up. I just turned it off when it got too cold, didn't have time for another request for repair. 2) The worst thing, although not bad enough to try to move to another room, was that somehow cigarette smoke comes into the bathroon from a vent in the bathroom. Pretty awful for a non-smoking room. But again, I didn't have time to try to deal with this issue. There was a notice in the room that says they are remodeling rooms in the hotel and there might be some noise between 10 am and 6 pm, but I did not hear anything. All in all, a good 4 day stay, except for the two minor inconveniences above. Nice pool, nice view of ocean. Casino and disco next door. SLOW/boring lobby bar in hotel. Hotel was fairly quiet at all times, which I appreciate.

Front desk staff not very helpful

This was the second time that I stay in this hotel. The hotel is great but this time I had a really bad experience with the front desk staff. I reserved a room for 4 people and I asked if I was paying for a room or per person, they told me I can bring 3 people along. When I check in I was alone and nobody asked me if somebody else was checking in. Two days after I arrived a friend came and was not able to saty with me. They told me I would have to pay $25.00 per night. Then another staff member told me $26.00 per night and the fallowing morning another staff member told me $50.00. I was very disapointed and nobody did anything to fix the problem. The day I check out I had a bill for something I didn't consume. They never told me what it was and at the end I had to pay for it because I was late and couldn't wait for them to explain. I am not staying in the hotel anymore.

Not as last year, but still OK

I stayed at this hotel last year for the same amount I had payed this year. I was given a room with a view of the generators and the backside. When I requested a change, they had stated that because I had payed a "standard rate" a change was not possible. I had payed the same rate last year, and was given a superior room with ocean view, and higher up in the tower. I guess this year it was the luck of the draw.

You are in the center of Gazcue, one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city. There are many lunch and dining options within walking distances.

Vacation Trip

For those staying at the Malecon area of Santo Domingo, the hotel compare to others I have stayed is one of the better ones. I have stayed at the Melia resorts in different countries and this one is not as nice as the others I have stayed in. The positives are:The food here is great. The beds are comfortable. The gym is small but has enough for a good work out. The staff is very pleasant. Negatives are hot water runs out in the shower, the pool area was nice, but the bottom was breaking and a couple people ended up cutting the bottom of their feet when walking in that part of the pool. You have to pay for internet service on a daily basis.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

If you would like to dine outside of the hotel, right on George Washington Ave, making a left outside of the hotel, you can have dominican pizza at Pizzarelli. This pizza by far is better than pizza hut and dominos. If you make a right after leaving the hotel, there is a restaurant on the lefthand side of the street called Adrian Tropical for typical dominican cuisine. Everything I have tried there is delicious. The view is beautiful there as well when dining outside.

Are all Spanish Hotels like this?

Nickel and dimed us. No free internet and what was worse when you did buy their internet for $9 for 24 hours they make it only for one devise. I believe the internet should be treated like a TV something that comes with the room with no extra charge. I usually stay at other hotel chains that include free internet. Also when we complained about this, the lady at the front desk just keep looking at us like we were from outer space. All she would says was i can give you another code....for another $9. Also I ordered a small 6 oz. bottle of water and they charged me more then a beer it was $6 and the beer was $4. In the final analysis I will not be going back to this Spanish Hotel Chain or will any of my employees.

Don't walk outside this hotel on the Malecon....over run with beggars and ladies of the night. Bad location even though it is near the ocean.

I paid 300 Peso for grilled meats and salad and you could have eaten as how much you wanted from 6:00pm to 11:00p and it was excellent...will definitely recommend the place. It is before Napolitano Hotel...
