Great hotel, probably best in City

Great location in Colonial district. Plenty of places to see and eat in walking distance. Very safe area. Hotel is in fantastic condition, spotlessly clean, staff friendly and helpful. Would not hesitate in staying here again and would recommend the hotel to anyone. Looking forward to a trip back.

The hotel and property as a whole is gorgeuos. The excerise room falls short for a business traveler who would like to excersize during his stay. Food ad bar service are very good but a little on the pricey side. Overall have stayed here many times and will continue to for the moment.

The best possible location in

The best possible location in the old colonial part of the city. 1 minute to major attractions and great restaurants, shopping… Rooms are tastefully decorated, bathrooms huge with a walk-in shower and bathtub. Restaurant overpriced when compared to similar local ones. Pool lunches good value. For those people leaving the Dominican Republic late afternoon or at night, this is a good place to stay since check-out is till 2pm and there is also the possibility of very late checkout for an extra 70 US $, but most people just leave their luggage with the concierge and enjoy the pool area or go out for some last minute sightseeing. I would recommend this hotel and stay here again.

Great place to stay, relax, & explore

I stayed at Hostal Nicolas de Ovando for 3 nights on my first trip to Santo Domingo. It's a gorgeous hotel with beautiful amenities including dark hardwood furniture that makes the hotel room feel more like a home. There are numerous open air seating areas for reading and dining, either at the bar or the restaurant. The biggest pro is the hotel's location right within the Colonial Zone which is a safe part of town with a lot to see by foot during the day but also lots of night activity -- families with kids visit the nearby restaurants around the park. The only downsides are (1) the hotel food was super pricey, although well prepared and (2) the rooms open to the Ozama River's port so you see a lot of ships/cargo and not a lot of water. The solutions to these are to dine out at the local spots (walk down Calle de Las Camas and turn onto El Conde) and to see some ocean during the rest of your stay in the DR.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

When you exit the hotel turn left and walk down Calle de Las Damas untl you hit El Conde. If you take a left you can go down the stairs to explore the pretty remains of the fort (where usually 4 teenage couples are nestled in various corners at any one time). If you take a right there are a bunch of restaurants and bars to explore.
