Punta Cana hotel embraces intimacy and luxury with 30 beachfront suites

Tortuga Bay Hotel, an exclusive beachfront property with access to a 1,500-acre ecological reserve, shines with 30 suites spanning multiple villas. Suites -- all designed by Oscar de la Renta -- maintain upscale casual charm with canopy beds and terraces or balconies with sweeping views of the Caribbean Sea or La Cana Golf Course. The golf courses -- La Cana and Corales -- come with their own designer appeal (P.B. Dye and Tom Fazio, respectively) and more lush landscaping.

Highlights
  • AAA Five Diamond Award winner boasting an ecological reserve
  • 30 suites designed by Oscar de la Renta overlooking the Caribbean Sea
  • Golf courses designed by Tom Fazio and P. B. Dye
  • Spa and fitness center
  • Golf cart for guests' use
Rooms

Tortuga Bay Hotel rooms hold designer appeal; none other than fashion icon Oscar de la Renta created the look of the 30 suites spread over multiple villas. A foundation of neutral tones enhances more dramatic touches like fuchsia-colored orchids, black canopy beds and orange-hued throw pillows. Extras like Jacuzzis built on second-floor balconies, Frette linens and panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea or La Cana Golf Course enhance the stay. Extended stay travelers also take advantage of the separate kitchens for preparing meals in.

Features

La Cana Golf Course designed by P.B. Dye invites guests to play by the water's edge thanks to 14 holes with ocean views. Another course – Corales Golf Course – bears a layout created by another pro: Tom Fazio. Six Senses Spa and the 1,500-acre ecological reserve showcase the resort's diverse options for leisure time.

Dining

Guests enjoy meals alfresco or indoors at Bamboo, specializing in modern and Mediterranean fare, and one of Tortuga Bay Hotel's eight restaurants. Also designed by Oscar de la Renta, the restaurant sets the scene for intimate meals with a nice selection of gourmet teas and coffees, cold dish buffet and on-the-spot cooking stations and poolside tables shaded by umbrellas.

Secluded... too much so ?

Going to this luxurious complex for a R&R 5-day stay, we knew it was not 'all inclusive' as most are in the Dominican Republic. We therefore expected a higher quality of service and discrete but polished and efficient attention from the staff. Except when it comes to the customs we could fly through both ways (!) as the international airport is basically on the property grounds, we cannot say we got the level of service we were expecting. Staff is very gracious and tries their best but clearly is largely undertrained for a 5-star. Another disappointment came with the ridiculous mark-ups we were forced to pay for any item (a very far from extravagant dinner for two ends up above the $120 mark, probably $160 with 2 glasses of wine and some water) as we were basically trapped on the grounds of "Punta Cana". We came to discover -we should have known better- that Punta Cana is not really the name of a town or a village, but more of a marketing concept (with fences around it, though). Too bad, because the natural setting is truly gorgeous, and extremely well preserved too. All in all, yes we had a very restful stay in a great natural environment and well designed and kept hotel. Seclusion however is something you want to decide for yourself, when you want it, rather than it being imposed upon you by design. When this feeling of being trapped is combined with hefty and unjustified prices, it turned into not such a great experience overall...
