Great Value

Overall, this hotel was a great value. We had trouble with just about every electronic item in our room, but most of the staff was excellent. The one thing that is kind of annoying is that the room's power is only on if you have a room key in the room. If you leave a key card in the power switch when you leave the room, the staff will remove it when they make up the room, fill the minibar, etc. Then you come back to a hot room with an undersized A/C unit. Overall, the barstaff was very good. The waitstaff in most cases were good, but there were a few exceptions. The food was decent. Las Torres was a very good buffet. The Royal Gourmet was pretty good, but the lobster there was not very good. El Behique was an okay buffet and El Arrecife was a buffet and not very good. Bamboo was a fantastic chinese restaurant (probably my favorite of the restaurants I went to. El Rodizio was the Brazilian restaurant. I love the brazilian style restaurants, but it seemed the the meat was tenderized to the point that it had no texture arount the edges. Sumptuori is the Benihana style restaurant. It was good, but we weren't sat at one of the grilles, so it wasn't as fun as you would expect. I did not get to go to the steakhouse, but I had beef fillets several times while we were there. The beef there certainly isn't as good as American beef, but the ox was fairly close. The seafood was not as good as I expected. The pools and the beach were great. The palladium hotels probably have about 1km of beach. We went in late November. At this time of year, we found that you don't want to sleep in because the best beach weather is in the morning starting around 8:00am. It usually gets pretty cloudy/rainy later in the afternoon. Some of the perks you get over the other parts of the resort by staying in the Royal Suites are reservations in the al a carte restaurants, point-to-point transportation #you don't have to use the train that loops arond the resort), free wi-fi, and butler service.

The bottle of rum I wanted was $9 in a local shop and $25 at the airport duty-free store. Don't buy anything from the airport duty-free stores. The Catalina picked us up for free. They were recommended to us by VIP travel, the transfer company we booked through the website.

GREAT Time...!

I stated at the Turquesa which was adults only and had a pool attached to by sliding door. DEFINATELY, take this option. It was quite and peacful and I really relaxed. Then if you wanted more fast paced busyiness...simply walk to the other family places. The BEACH was georgous and well kept...everyday they would have staff that would clean the seaweed away to reveal the soft white sands. The only thing I didn't like was not feeling safe if I left the resort...so I stayed inside it. The SPA...WOW! Ask for Franseca and get the DeStress treatment....it's intoxicating and made the trip so amazing.!

The outside tables at Le Chanterelle were so enjoyable...and this restaurant is reserved for only those that stay at the Royal Suites Adults Only which made it very romantic! SPECAIL NOTE... TIP! These folks work hard to serve you and they deserve it. I found estimating what it would cost at home and tipping appropriately worked best and insured VERY Special attention when I returned...!

More Mediocre than Expected

The cleaning staff were exceptional. The hotel was well maintained, with beautiful landscaping. The beach was very clean, and most staff were very pleasant and helpful. The concierge was less than helpful. We had booked an pre-paid excursion, and in spite of calling this organization 4 times over a 2 day period, we were unable to make arrangements for the actual outing, so lost this money. The phones for the adventure were often unattended, and when people did answer, "the right person wasn't available." The excursion company seemed entirely unapologetic and were not helpful--we were transferred about 5 times in a 15 min span, to have to re-explain the prepaid safari option, only to be told that we needed to talk to someone else, and be transferred again. The hotel staff replied that since that didn't book it personally, they couldn't help--and they didn't. Mind you, they used the same company for other outings, but still were not willing to help with this issue. There was a limited cocktail menu, and the food was adequate, but not spectacular. In contrast to the other resort restaurants, the Italian restaurant was the best of the lot, good service, and excellent pasta + Caribbean lobster that was very well prepared. Advice: Skip the others, and go to this one every night. Hours for dining are strictly enforced. Breakfast ends at 10am, and in spite of being an all inclusive resort, I was told by room service that orange juice was a "breakfast item," so could not have it--this was 10 minutes past the cutoff. Being more flexible on menus and times to dine would do this place significant favors. Ultimately, I would choose not return to this resort company based on our experiences here.

Very happy with the trip

We were very happy with this resort. It was DEFINITELY worth it to buy up to the swim-up suites. The food was good, but not great. The Mexican restaurant was the best that we had. We did one excursion for a "party boat" where we snorkeled with sharks & sting rays and then partied on the boat with music & drinks and it was a blast. Bottom line - you'll love this place, but get a swim-up suite. Don't forget bug spray!

Grounds Beautiful but Staff Uncaring

Beautiful grounds but caters to Europeans mostly and Americans can be ignored, almost no one understands English. Power outages, long room service delivery times and rude phone skills. Most waiters approach your dinner table with "Ready?", no Hello or Hola? Sales are relentless in seeking you out to get you to a meeting to join their club, can't even get to the beach without them tackling you in the lobby. The resort is vast and you will need to take transportation to most restuarants and so-so entertainment. Upon checkout, no one asks how our stay was or even a thank you? I guess they missed General Business 101. Overall not a bad place, nice rooms and food is fine depending on what you order, beef is stringy and tough but most other entrees are fine. Do not expect premium drinks, some venues only have wine or basic beer brands. We went to another adults only, all inclusive resort in Punta Cana within the past 2 yrs and it was a world of difference, all they cared about was us having fun and were only happy if we had what we needed, with the exception of a few outstanding employees, Royal Suites could have cared less if we were even there. We would not go back as the employees just take so much away from an otherwise fine resort.

Skip the Bavarro Plaza shopping, to much hassle and a long hot walk in a borderline dangerous area with broken glass and litter all over the sidewalks, really?

Honeymoon

This resort was superb. The staff was helpful and attentive. The only minor complaints I have is the beds were very hard and uncomfortable, and the shopping experience next to the beach was very forceful and extremely annoying to the point where they basically pushed you into their shops. Scary actually. But the resort itself was more than I expected. First class all the way

Be prepared for the excursions asking for tips on the ride back to the resort, to the point of their staff complaining to you they need a tip because they make $5.00 a day. Even though your paying $90.00 per person.

Never Again!!!

This was my first time coming here, and my last! I've never felt happier to go back home from a vacation... BEACH... First of all, the beach is gorgeous and the hotel grounds are also very beautiful and clean. There's beach chairs, beds, and hammocks everywhere, looks like paradise! The water is blue and crystal clear, not rocky at all no need for water shoes. The sand is white and simply put this beach is amazing. There are servers walking around to bring you drinks and a cooler with sandwiches for when you're hungry... Tip : Don't get on the banana boat unless you're planning on getting hurt. I have a big bruise on my back and my husband a swollen wrist as a result of a sharp turn that ended with us in the water. I've been on the banana boat plenty of times and have been thrown in the water, but never at the speed this boat was going at. A lady on the banana boat with us got out with a bloody lip! They don't know what they're doing, they don't explain anything to you, and I wouldn't trust them. FOOD... That said, the food was horrible! We ate at the Royal Gourmet, Brazilian restaurant, Italian restaurant, and also tried the room service food. Basically I ate because I was hungry, not because I enjoyed the food. For me, a big part of vacation is eating good food and instead I couldn't wait to go back home and eat good food! At the Brazilian restaurant the meat was overcooked and dry, at the Royal Gourmet the ribs I ordered had almost no meat and the meat it did have was chewy and overcooked, and at the Italian the meat in my lasagna was just not good. I know this is another country, but I've been to other countries and yes the food is different but good- not here! We ordered room service and the burgers were way undercooked It seemed as if they were still raw from the inside! YUCK! Last two days I tried to stick to eating just fruit so I wouldn't get sick, because my husband got so sick from the food he had to spend almost the whole trip in the room eating only fruit and crackers. HOTEL... The grounds are gorgeous, amazing heated pool with swim-up bar. Beautiful palm trees everywhere and green everywhere you look. The lobby had nice decor and it was nice and cool, which is more than I could say for the other places( including restaurants) where it felt like they had the AC on super ultra low or no AC at all. The rooms were nice, but nothing special. I chose to stay in the "older section" simply because of the proximity to the beach, and based on pictures the difference from the new section isn't that much of a difference. The new section has swim- up pools, but I would rather be close to the beach and use the pool with the bar I guess it depends on your preference. The bathroom was a little different, toilet separate from shower with "stall-like" doors, so basically when you get out of the shower you are in the room not in the bathroom. I did enjoy the jacuzzi tub, it had jets and was big enough for two but more comfortable for just one. Don't forget the bug spray!- I woke up with about 10 new mosquito bites each day!!! Also, we had a full mini-bar, that never got re-filled, which leads me to my next topic which is service. SERVICE... Horrible! They try, but I think they need better management. They have a paper you fill out where you put what you want in your mini-bar and what kind of pillow you want from their very fancy "pillow menu". Useless! Never got anything. First of all I never saw my "butler" until the last day before I left when he seemed to be very concerned about how my stay was. My mini-bar wasn't refilled the next day after arriving, so then we called the "butler" and an hour later still nothing so we called again, another hour goes by still nothing. Finally, I went down to the lobby because we were so thirsty and the guy said he would work on it right away, but then said my butler was on a lunch break and he would do it in half hour when he was back, how long are their lunch breaks 2 and a half...

Nice resort but service and food just ok

My husband and I decided to get away for 4 days no kids. We debated going to Mexico (our destination of choice)...but decided to try something different and always wanted to go to the Dominican Republic. Needless to say, we will be heading back to Mexico next time. The resort and rooms were average, certainly nothing special. The food was average at best. We did have two good dinners at the Italian Restaurant and the Brazilian Restaurant. The Royal Gourmet was mediocre. Had a lamb chop the last night that was virtually inedible. Despite all this (which I could overlook)...the service was below standard. We saw the famed "butler" once on check in and never saw her again. There was absolutely no consistency with staff so we were never able to get to know a particular bartender. It was almost as if they were doing you a favor waiting on you. In Mexico they are so hospitable and can't do enough to make your stay great. Here...not so much. The beaches were beautiful...pool ok.
