Great all inclusive resort for families with children

Great place if you have children. Buffet is great. Room is cleaned twice per day. Freiendly personal. You need to ask for a golf car to go to the beach, but it takes about 3 min. If you are travveling w/o children you probably better go not to the reserve, but in Palma Real itself, that is on the beach.

Horrible Service! Horrible Staff! Horrible Location!

This hotel is as any new modern American Hotel! Nothing fascinating! Nothing fascinating about grounds yet I felt like I was in Tennesee instead of Carribean! Staff- wow! I never seen resort staff so unpleasant and so ready to rob your pockets! I will tell you this I vacationed in Puerto Plata Blue Bay Hotel and Resorts, staff at BB and at Reserve is like" Blue Bay = Waldrof Astoria Reserve - Holiday inn in Pakistan! I don't reccomand this place at all!

not worth it

very unfriendly staff for the price paid, everything revolves around hooking up people to their vacation club, which by the way is not at all worth it. You expect to find dominican hospitality here, but its actually run by a very negative mexican staff. it is also located far away from the beach and you have to wait long for the shuttle. it seems the Hotel is very understaffed.

Needs improvement

- nice resort, but you're paying more to be farther form the beach, not sure how that came about... - staff is nice and friendly, but unprofessional, they're never there when you need them, expect tips for EVERY single thing they do and don't know the most basic drinks (i.e. margaritas, mudslides etc) - transportation between The Reserve and the beach is about 5-7 minutes PLUS 20 minutes that you spend waiting for the golf cart - the resort is advertised as family friendly, however, there are no elevators and tons of stairs; ground-level suites have terraces that are not fenced in and the pool is right at the end of the terrace; - there seems to be a shortage of towels at the beach, if you arrive around noon or later, don't expect any (we were told that people 'take too many'... very professional...) - very limited selection of breakfast items is served at The Reserve buffet as opposed to the buffet at Palma Real (doesn't make sense to me that I'm paying more to be under-served) - babysitters at the Kidz Zone don't feel that they need to be in the play area even when there are kids under their care there at the moment - dinners are 'extremely' hard to book, since 'everything is filled', yet when you go to any restaurant at any given time in the evening you'll see lots of available tables Overall, it's a nice resort that's being terribly mis-managed. There is a lot of room for improvement and hopefully the management reviews their problem areas.

Money-saving tip: Not Applicable

Save yourself money and stay at The Palma Real instead of The Reserve. You'll be right on the beach, which will also save you time (about 1 hr a day) in transportation.

Service was major letdown.

This place is very relaxing, grounds are amazing, but we were so let down time and time again by the staff here. The best restaurant that is included with the reserve is Gabbi Beach, which has great Lobster daily as well as other awesome desserts. There are tons of day beds, loungers, padded chairs throughout the resort where you can find a place to relax without any one else around which was really cool. The beach was great with the reserve section, and there is a pool for the reserve that's right off the beach too. Now for the service... We were ignored by the concierge at the front desk of our building daily and if we asked them for something it was like you interrupting their browsing of the internet. If you do wait to book your dinner reservations plan on doing it in person and not over the phone, as they won't call you back if they say they will to let you know if they got you a reservation (this happened 3x to us). There wasn't concierge service on the beach. You aren't offered drinks on the beach. For the first 4 days of our trip in the cabanas/chairs on the reserve, there was not a waiter around taking drink orders, the last 3 there was. The bartenders at the pool were very rude, you have to waive them down while they are talking to the wait staff to help you get a drink. It is a little difficult to figure whats included with your stay, a person at the front desk said "if you keep asking different staff members you'll get a different answer," which clearly meant to me that they are not informed. The staff at the main hotel (Paradisus Palma Real) was actually friendlier and helpful than the reserve, which we really couldn't understand since the Reserve is supposed to be nicer... The resort credit is a joke, so many stipulations and the $500 shopping credit is laughable, get $10 off your $200 purchase. I would have a hard time recommending this place to others. We have been to Mexico a number of times and the service is much better there.

Not as great as I expected!

The resort is beautiful, however, the concierge and the resort staff were not as helpful as they should be. The resort advertises that is it upscale and that the staff goes out of their way to assist it's guests. Everything is a hassle and they are constantly trying to sell you a timeshare. In addition, they advertise having 8-10 restaurants to choose from, however, on any given night only about 3 of them are open for dinner. Again, the resort is gorgeous to look at but the service makes it not worth it!

Mandatory "Resort Fees"

Many hotels have taken to the practice of adding extra "fees" to your bill which is simply a way of hiding the true cost of the hotel room (for things you may not want or use). Unfortunately, THE Hotel at Mandalay Bay is no different. Watch out for hidden "Resort Fees" of about $45/day automatically added to your bill upon check out.To [...]' credit, I later noticed on the last line of the Travel Document a section called "Mandatory Charges". So why make it an extra charge on a separate line rather than simply including it in the price? Quite simple - to take advantage of the unsuspecting consumer. While I like this place, I would probably not stay here again simply because I find these practices quite deceitful as one can never quite be sure if the price you are being quoted is really what you are going to pay. Also, the room was quite dusty, as they never truly appear to have cleaned it,

To be 5 Star, you need to pay attention to details

My wife and spent 8 days at the Reserve and on the whole, it was a pretty relaxing experience with high quality food all round. However, when it came to service, they have a long way to go...starting with the front desk! Here is a laundry list annoyances that mostly tied into a lack of communication on some front. - Didn't tell us they stuck us in a room with 2 double beds until we got into the room. Not how you want to start your anniversary getaway. We raised a stink and they reluctantly moved us. - The 2 TVs both got poor reception and one stopped working. - $2 alarm clock and $5 stereo that didn't work. Really? That's the best you could do? - Significant number of calls down to front desk or spa that went unanswered or into voice mail. They seem understaffed at the front desk. - Forgot to bring coffee/breakfast to the room twice. - Maids gave us a bit of hard time when we asked for small face clothes. Weird. Are they endangered? - The assigned butler for the week was, well, pretty self centered and not very responsive or even visible. He seemed visibly upset when we were clear with him early on we didn't want to sit through the time share pitch. Unprofessional comes to mind. He seemed very disinterested in us after that first introductory conversation. He also forgot to follow up on a couple requests and never apologized. - My wife needed to get medicine from the pharmacy, which took a while to reach from the front desk, then difficult to communicate with, then slow to deliver, and when they did show up, they brought the wrong medicine! We had to go through the process all over again. - I arranged a tee time a course and waited 50 minutes longer than the planned departure time. The service the hotel didn't seem to care too much that they were late picking me up. There were lots of little things you would expect but you get the picture. There were also a lot things they did right and some employees really did try hard to make you comfortable, despite the all-inclusive nature that doesn't lend itself to great service mentality. The staff was overly friendly for the most part, always smiling and kind. They were everywhere you didn't need to go far to find someone with a badge. The music was pretty relaxing and what you would want poolside. The shuttles to the beach ran very frequently, so you could rides easily to the main hotel where the beach was located. And bartenders were generous in their pours and eager to fix you the drink of choice. The beds were a bit uncomfortable and springy with cheap sponge pillows, not the best. Definitely 3 star beds, not five star. All that said, you can't beat the weather and the rooms, hallways and facilities were decked out with marble, beautiful tile and manicured gardens everywhere. The place was always clean and the Spa at the Reserve was expensive but full of ladies that knew exactly what pressure to exert to get out those kinks. The health club was decent and located next to the spa, so all good there.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Try to make sure you get to all the restaurants, including the only one you pay $60 pp for, worth the dining experience and the good was excellent. Also recommend the Caribbean Pirate ship cruise, which was an interactive "play" of sorts that included a stop for dinner on an ocean platform just away from shore. Great change of pace with some good fun with aspiring, young actors. Also, if you have kids, the Reserve is the place. IF no kids, stay at the Caba Real facility which has fewer.

Cocotel golf was nightmare experience

The concierge at the reserve made us 8:20 am tee times on Thursday,11/03/11. We arrived at course at 8:00 am and went into the club house to pay for our cart fees and rental clubs. A very rude woman (who is there every day and everyone that golfed there hated her) asked where our vouchers were from the hotel for the green fees. I told her the concierge did not mention vouchers nor did she give them to me. She rudely said I had two choices: 1. to pay for the green fees or walk back to our hotel and get them! I said that both of her suggestions were unaacceptable and to have the bus bring them back on their next trip and we would pay after we golfed. She refused to let us play without the vouchers so we stormed out and walked back to the hotel. Jordy another concierge heard of our nightmare and called the club and got us comp cart fees for the next day. WE went back on friday and we paid for our clubs and golfed. However on the 8th hole it datrted to rain and did not stop . After 45 minutes it got worse so we headed back to the club house and got thouroughly soaked because they did not provide umbrellas. Longs story short, the rude woman would not give us rain check. Unless we are compensated the 94.00 rental club fee , I will never go back . Please see what you can do to help us get i back.. Please call me to resolve
