Don't re-book your transfer if you're leaving early. They told us they would pick us up at 5:30 a.m. and then called our room at 4:00 a.m. because they were ready to leave / left without us and then we had to get a taxi to the airport. Also be careful if you book excursions - we thought we were booking a massage at our hotel and instead it cost us $20.00 in taxi fees to get to the OTHER hotel the spa was located at. The hotel itself was nice, however we spent every day trying to avoid our consierge. He kept trying to get us to sit down to ... listen to a 90 minute presentation on their time shares. He would not take no for an answer. He would call the room as well as ask every morning. We spoke with other couples that had similar experiences. We were on our honeymoon so this was particularly annoying. The food was okay. The food was very similar from restaurant to restaurant so not much variety.

Everything was great except for the beach. It was the only hotel where the waves were 3feet high. We took a boat ride and we ... noticed that the beach looked like a lagoon outside of our hotel area, maybe due to the location on the island. Also too crowded, and they claim the previlage of having a private beach when you book royal service, but it didnt seem that way when we got there. No need to upgrade to royal service! and don't agree to listen to a 90minute presentation about "timeshares" they will make you sign an 90 minute agreement.. DO NOT DO IT!

Each restaurant experience was delightful! We especially enjoyed the Japanese and the Mediteranean dining and service. The Italian restaurant's menu was too limited for our enjoyment, so we left and went to another restaurant on the property. We had no trouble getting reservations.

Everything We Desired and More!

My husband and I travel a lot. This was our second trip to this hotel. It has been well maintained, and we noticed ... improvements in the rooms, and additions to the hotel. The food was as delicious, as before, and I believe I gained a few pounds. The new Reserve section is outstanding and my husband especially enjoyed the 24 hour room service, for he loves to eat in the middle of the night. The staff are very friendly, and we had fun practicing our limited Spanish. We believe in tipping for good service, even though it is all inclusive, we would encourage you to do the same. Our beach experience was better this time, for the sea was not rough.

I thought the hotel grounds were beautiful. The staff was more than helpful, right down to the groundskeepers. The only ... draw back to the hotel was the lack of information. I wish the hotel had more info in the room about restaurants, menus and activities. If you didn't do you research you wouldn't know what was going on and you had to call for info on what restaurants were open which nights.
Traveler type: Friends
Order double rum, etc. drinks are a little watered down. Also, tip the wait staff, even if it's a little bit. They don't expect it but they are very grateful. Also, the groundskeeper will cut open a fresh coconut for you to drink the water if you ask. We had them every day and we gave the guy a $1 or 2 once in a while.

Overall we loved our experience at the Paradisus. There were a few small hiccups but nothing major that would prevent us ... from returning or recommending to others. The food was fabulous; the nightlife was entertaining; most of the staff was friendly and competent. Be prepared for the Vacation Club sales people. Also be prepared for some not so friendly staff members. The beach was gorgeous!

Make sure you make all your dinner reservations on the day that you arrive. Some restaurants aren't open every day and they book up quickly. We highly recommend Vento & Fuego for dinner. La Palapa Grill for lunch is outstanding. Make sure to wear casual dressy clothing for dinner.

I recently stayed at the Paradisus for a Mother/Daughter trip. We both had stayed at the Paradisus once before. My mother ... with her husband and i with my friends. The resort truly is amazing, the grounds are well kept with an amazing tropical feeling, plenty of dining options, extremely clean beach, friendly staff, a small night club starts at 1130/12 nightly, and the nightly shows are entertaining with a slight Vegas feel. This is a great resort for couples & families. As far as a singles vacation it wouldnt be my suggestion if you are trying to meet other singles, aside from the fact that it is one of the best resorts on the Island and worth the money to relax. The hotel is truly all inclusive with food, drinks, entertainment and even cigarettes for those who smoke. We attempted to try a new hotel this year (Dreams Palm Beach) and we were there for a total of 6 hours before we left and came back to the paradise of Paradisus. Highly recommend this hotel! We will be back again for sure

Great getaway for friends!
Mego Jul 13, 2009
Overall it was a great trip. Considering the last time I travled out of the United States I got horribly ill and did not this ... time, thats a Huge plus. The hotel was beautiful! Staff was very friendly. Upon checking in my husband and I were given a room with two full beds instead of one King bed and they were very fast in changing rooms for us, no problem and keeping us close to another couple we traveld there with. We did a Boogie excursion while there and it was a blast! Couple of things I personally wish were different was that they do not serve you at the pool or while you are out on the beach. You have to go yourself to the bar and get drinks and their alcohol selection was ok. Ive seen better. It wasn't bad but it could have been better. Bugs at night kinda suck. My legs were half eaten alive but as long as you take bug spray you should be ok. Last the reservations for the resturants we got screwed on. We could only eat at one of the resturatans that required reservations b/c none of the other rest. had open availablity, unless we wanted to eat at 9:30 at night. So that sucked and I wish we could have tried some of the other reservations required rest. but the other rests. that didn't need reservations were still good!

The Market place right outside the hotel (a 10 minute walk) was where we got all of our gifts to take home. Nice things to look at and buy but make sure you haggle with them about prices. They might say one price but you can get it down to much lower if you go back and forth with them.

Relaxing and Beautiful
Bruingrl79 Jul 11, 2009
I stayed at another Melia hotel in San Juan so, I was looking forward to this one. Mostly hits, few misses. I stayed at The ... Reserve and...if you're going to stay at this hotel STAY AT THE RESERVE. Here are the high and low lights:Check in: If you're staying at The Reserve, make sure you TELL THEM as soon as you get out of the car or shuttle upon arriving. They didn't ask me and I didn't know that The Reserve check-in was in a whole different location so I stood in line sweating with all the other regular check-ins. So, make sure you tell them. After they found out I was in The Reserve, I was whisked away to a (thankfully) air-conditioned room with one on one prompt service. They offered me a drink and tried to make sure my needs were met fully. The concierge service at The Reserve: absolutely worth the price of admission. American Airlines had lost my bag and, even though it had nothing to do with the resort, they took over for me, calling the agents, making sure I got my luggage which showed up in my room the next day. They made all my dinner reservations for me, my spa reservation and a few times they personally escorted me where I needed to go. Anything I needed, they bent over backwards to get me. I wanted to go parasailing, and one of them walked me to the location, explained what I wanted to the guy, and waited to escort me back to The Reserve. I dont know what I would have done without my concierges, seriously. One of them tried very briefly to talk to me about the timeshare that they hock but I just said a simple "no thanks" and the conversation was over. Pools and Beaches: There was absolutely NO PROBLEM at The Reserve with people reserving beach chairs early. The Reserve Pool was pretty private and there were never more than 10 guests there at any given time so there was zero problem getting a spot. The swim up bar was open too and [...] the bartender was so nice. I schlepped to the Royal Service pool once and it was more busy but there were still places available. As for the beaches, theres a private Reserve area on the beach and, once again, there were no problems finding a beach chair in a prime location. The beach waiter was great fun too. I asked for one drink and he brought me two...read my mind! The pools and beaches are clean and aesthetically they are beautiful. Im not much of a water person and even I spent copious amounts of time in the pool and at the beach. The Spa: Was pricey and they didnt do a great job with my pedicure. I mean, for 70 bucks, I expect magic and I could've gotten the same thing for 20 bucks here in L.A. It was worth it though only for the conversation with the salon employees and the other guests. I met some really sweet women there. The food: the only real low for me. I don't know what it was but I couldn't really digest anything I ate on that whole island. Besides that, it just wasn't very tasty. Terra - the steakhouse was by far the best place I ate. Dolce Vita, Italian, was good too but nothing special. Gabi's breakfast was the best breakfast I had. The omelette man isnt very friendly but he made a mean omelette. Vento, the Mediterranean place was just o.k. It was beautiful inside but I wasn't too impressed with the food. Hibiscus was troubling sometimes but I lucked out on a red beans and beef stew dish once. Room service was the same thing....ok but nothing to write home about. The Suite: BEAUTIFUL. stunning. I didn't know that there would be a kitchenette area and there was. I think I may have been upgraded without my knowledge which I certainly didn't mind. Two flat screens, DVD Player, CD Player, Jacuzzi tub, beautiful. Loved it. The bed was firmer than I would have personally liked but that was ok. The balcony faced the pool and Gabi and there was always something to look at out there. BEWARE though...don't shut the balcony door behind you, it WILL lock! Within minutes of arriving to my room, I locked myself out on the balcony....

Paradise with a few flaws
Super traveler Paula Jul 6, 2009
We stayed 6 nights at the resort. I was somewhat concerned over the mixed reviews I had read. Overall, it was a nice resort ... with beautiful grounds and a great beach. We had no problem with check in. There were six of us all together and we had booked 3 rooms. We called ahead to request king size beds and to make sure the rooms would be close together. The hotel staff accommodated those requests. The rooms were spacious and clean. Our balcony overlooked the pool. We had problems with our card keys opening our room door and the staff immediately changed them for us and we had no further issues with them. We met up with a concierge who handled all of our restaurant reservations for the week. The food was one of our biggest disappointments. I'll break it down by restaurant: First night we arrived we did not have reservations. We ate at Vita which is the Italian restaurant that you do not need reservations for. We had to wait approximately 1/2 hr. for a table. The food was good and so was the service once we got seated. The second night we ate at the Chinese restaurant called the Pavillion. You cannot make reservations and we waited over an hour to be seated. We couldn't figure out why since the restaurant was half empty. The service was terrible and the servers all looked miserable - like they didn't want to be there. It was our worst dining experience of the week. The food was just ok. The next night we ate at Terra which is the steakhouse. We had reservations and got in right away. It is partial buffet style for salads and desserts. We went up to get our salads and the bowls were empty. When staff finally brought out more salad they brought out enough for about 2 or 3 people only. My daughter saw bugs crawling on some of the desserts. Our steaks were overcooked and tough. El Romanitico and Vento were both very good with great service. At Sakura, the japanese restaurant they cook the food in front of you. The rice was so undercooked it was actually crunchy when we tried to chew it. We had breakfast every morning at Hybiscus. They had great omelets and tasty smoothies made to order. We usually got our lunch at La Palapa grill and took the food out to the beach. One day we waited over 1/2 hr. for an order of french fries. Two of the six of us ended up getting sick on the trip due to something we ate or drank. The pool and beach were both very enjoyable and relaxing. No problems getting chairs and there is plenty of shade available in both locations. The resort is huge and spread out. They do have shuttles available to take you around. Some of the staff did not seem to have knowledge about certain things and actually gave out erroneous information. Two members of our family wanted to go golfing one day and they were informed by the front desk that they would have to take a taxi to the golf course when there was actually a shuttle available. They paid over $30 round trip for a taxi ride that should have cost no more than $15. The next time they went they attempted to take the shuttle but the schedule that was posted for it in the lobby had not been updated and was wrong. They missed it and ended up having to take the taxi again! Hotel staff took no responsibility for this error and told us to call and change our tee time. This could not be done because we had specific dinner reservations that we had to beck back in time for. The gym was very nice and only crowded once. The attendant would always come by and give you a fresh cold bottle of water halfway through your workout. Three of us got massages at the spa and they were very enjoyable. We ventured out of the resort to go to the flea market. It is within walking distance, but we usually got a free shuttle ride to the front of the resort and then there were always shuttle vans in the area willing to give us a ride outside the front gates. We tipped the driver $3 for our group. At the shopping area they are very desperate to make a sa...

Do not get sucked in to taking a tour of The Reserve and the 90 minute sales presentation for the vacation club. They will try to sell you a 50 year membership for $55,000 and you will be stuck there for over 2 hours.

When you go to relax and this type of things happens / you aren't relaxed anymore!!!

Each restaurant experience was delightful! We especially enjoyed the Japanese and the Mediteranean dining and service. The Italian restaurant's menu was too limited for our enjoyment, so we left and went to another restaurant on the property. We had no trouble getting reservations.

Do not meet with concierge about time shares. Waste of time. Book all activities with front desk or your travel representative. NOT with sketchy guys on the beach.

There should be more access to transportation within the compound, especially late at night.

Stay away from the Concierge's. Their only real purpose is to get you to go to a sales presentation to buy into "The Reserve".You can make all reservations, dining etc without them.

Go shopping! Walk to a near by shopping mall and bargain with the locals to buy paintings and other tourist souveniers.

The Market place right outside the hotel (a 10 minute walk) was where we got all of our gifts to take home. Nice things to look at and buy but make sure you haggle with them about prices. They might say one price but you can get it down to much lower if you go back and forth with them.

Make sure you bring a pair of long pants if you want to dine in the French restaurant on the property.

A wide variety of restaurants to choose from within the resort, or you can order room service. They have a great menu.

Make sure you set up transportation to airport in advance and do not let them tell you that your transportation has left and you need to have the front desk arrange again. I was 10 min. late to have pick up for airport and hotel could not reach, from what they told me, lines were busy, I was checking out at the front desk returning keys/locks etc and went back to front loading area where there were other taxi's etc only to see a man with my tour name on it. I got in and gave him my photocopies of arrangements with Coco tours and when I got out, he told me I owed him 20.00 I told him you have my papers, and he haggled me to 10.00. I am writing Orbitz about this problem. Don't pay any asking price to jewelry or t-shirts..braclets are usually about 5-10$ 5$ for a t shirt off the beach areas. Have Fun!!!!

Make reservations before you get there - some of the better restaurants - El Romantico and Vento booked up early, and we had to eat later than we wanted!

We have been to Paradisus 3 years early, we didn't go to welcome cocktail time, because we weren't interested in trips, we could book through Orbitz. If you don't have conceire, it's very hard to get reservations for resturants. They ask who is your rep. & when you say no one, they'll say everything is booked. We had a bad time with Coco Tours rep., he was never at resort & last day we confirmed flight return with help from hotel customer service. The hotel customer service is not very pleased with James from Coco Tours & neither was my wife & I.

Dont rent a car. Take a bus from the airport to the hotel. There are no signs and line markings on the road and you really have to know the area if you are leaving the resort.........There is nothing much outside the resort area. There are buses that take you to all the outside the resort activities.

Really wasn't any. Need to open up more bars and restaurants for those who don't want reservations, who don't want to gamble every night and who don't want to see a show at 10 (which thought was too late too).

The food was great.
