Very upsetting
I'll agree that you get what you pay for. The food was relatively bland. My boyfriend who is a game technician and has much experience with electric shocks experienced a jolt at one of the restaurants, he told an employee who blamed it on my boyfriend being wet (he was dry as can be). There are vendors standing at their booths around the resort who were very pestering and rude. The power went out once for about 5 minutes, wasn't a big deal. I will admit that there was an employee named Elvin, who I will not forget because he was wonderful. The biggest deal breaker was that the hotel overbooked and was asking for volunteers to switch hotels in return for a free voucher back. We switched to a different resort which I have not one complaint about, however when the time came to cash in on our voucher we were ignored time and time again. I even managed to ring up an 80$ phone call by calling the number suggested on the voucher. I will avoid this resort and stick to the similarly priced barcelo bavaro.

You get what you pay for...
This hotel is not 5 star. But is an awesome experience. You just have to remember to keep things in perspective. You will not get 5 star treatment unless you splurge and do the room upgrade or join the vacation club. Those are worth looking into, and worth the investment. Don't bother going to the the restaurants on the resort. The main cafeteria is going to give you the best selection and the best quality.

Awful Experience
This resort is horrible from the rooms to the staff. Our room had a leaky shower that went unfixed after 3 complaints to the service, there were bugs in our room, I was bit numerous times. The ceiling had holes in it allowing rain to enter the room. The staff members at the front desk, wait staff & guest service were rude and not willing to work with us to fix the problems we were having. The food was horrible, very hard to get a reservation at one of the restaurants. The resort is run down, the light fixtures were hanging off the walls, there were broken & missing tiles and holes in the walls, door knobs missing, toilets that didn't flush. This was my first trip to Punta Cana and unfortunately the resort spoiled our entire trip. I would not recommend this resort to anyone.

Overall this resort gives fair value for your money. Not much special included. Could have included snorkeling. Food was average although the desserts were very good. None of the meat offerings were impressive, the steakhouse and the oriental were the best for this resort but not top shelf. Most of the service staff spoke little or no English so often had to refer to someone else. The beverage selection was poor unless you wanted to upgrade for $70.00 a day extra. The vacation club reps were a bit pesty but could be rebuked firmly.

Never pay much more than half of what is asked. Walking to and from the straw market was safe and prices reasonable after negotiation.

occidental hotel
my experience was wonderful. the staff went above and beyond to make sure our stay at this hotel a true experience. If I were to give this hotel 5 stars it would be because of the staff. One staff member who stood out the most was Beatriz a member of the house keeping staff. over all we had a great time and would return.

wouldn't go again
I must say that the hotel location is great and the hotel itself is beautiful. Like most vacation clubs, we were hassled by timeshare staff but after spending 30 minutes with them and receiving a free gift (souvenir I gave to my parents when I returned), they left us alone and let us enjoy our time there. Though you can't predict the weather, unfortunately it rained but there was plenty of sun in between for tanning and drinking by the pool was great. The pool was frigid cold. I also loved the pools and how they surrounded every building and still enjoyed going to them, regardless of not being to tolerate the temperature for very long. What really killed this trip for me was the all-inclusive meals. I'm a terrible cook, and I could've prepared food better than this. It was by far the lowest quality food I had ever seen and I had to limit a lot of my choices to what appeared sanitary (lot of buffet items sat out ALL DAY). And don't get me started on the so-called "reservation" restaurants. We came in late and couldn't book a reservation for the day we arrived or the day after because it had already filled up. We ate at their italian and mexican restaurants. I've never seen italian food prepared so poorly in my life. The mexican restaurant was tolerable but equally mediocre. I will say that the room was lovely and a lot better than I imagined. It was spacious, had a balcony overlooking the pool, and had a rustic villa feel that I wasn't expecting for an all-inclusive place. All in all, I had a great time drinking and exploring Punta Cana. My girlfriend and I were satisfied with the value of this trip, and would consider returning to Punta Cana, but not at this resort (most due to lousy food).

Short drive from hotel
If you are on a budget, the cheapest excursion is driving dune buggy's around the local area and its well worth the money. Me and my girlfriend loved it.

Relaxing Vacation
Nice facilities. Food could have been better as it did not compare to that of other all inclusive resorts we have visited. Maids seem to come and go into the room any time they felt like it. Good reason to invest in the safe lock, even if it is $30 for the week. You have to pay for wi-fi, so take some extra cash. Emilio, Ony and Christian were awesome bartenders at the lobby bar.

Disappointing
From the minute we got there, we felt more like a burden rather than welcomed. The hotels advertisement (and most of the reason we booked with them) made us believe that we were getting a lot included with the all-inclusive fare. What should have been included in the all-inclusive was changed. When we booked, the all-inclusive rate included horse back riding, among many other things. When we tried to book this excursion on Wednesday, we were told that "two days ago our manager took that off the website, there is a fee". Nothing was done to accomodate us. The food was awful, and when we didn't like something, there was no apology. Usually, at all inclusive resorts, a different food option was offered. At the Occidental, it was not. The beach was beautiful, and the spa was very nice (but we did not receive our 15% discount as it said we would on the website). In order to have fun, we had to create the fun. Basically, I would not recommend this resort.

I was put in a room on the second floor, cause of a bad knee I asked for a room on a first floor. They did not have a Jr suite on a first floor, so they gave us an ocean view for the same price. The staff was the best.
