Just Average, would not go again

The resort has not been renovated for a long time - cracked paint, old rooms, etc. No waves at the beach, but it was not clean and clear water. No Water Park inside the resort. Its very large resort, too big. Sometimes it took time to get trolley. Food just average. Every night there were ok shows. Too many different bugs in rooms - nothing dangerous but didnt feel comfortable with them.

Look elsewhere

I can't believe how many good ratings this place gets either inexperienced travelers or shills for the property. Grounds are nice but muddy in areas a canal/swamp runs through the property, but not noticeable to most rooms, the property itself is showing its age and run down in areas. At times a whiff of raw sewage can permeate the air. Food can be decent to good sometimes, usually though it's poor to downright bad, the restaurants seem clean and some are charming. Ice must be a luxury item because almost all drinks are warm or cool at best and watered down, beer is warm and bad. Staff can be great or very poor, bartenders tend to ignore you unless you tip early and often even then service will be suspect. Hostesses and wait staff usually act as if you are a major inconvenience to them, some are great most aren't. Air conditioners are on motion sensors from 7am until 10pm so you better like getting up early as the a/c will shut off at 7 and the room will begin to heat up unless you are moving around. Check in took 60 min as we had to haggle with upgrades and our check-in person disappeared 1/2 way through and never came back, had to find someone else to check us in. Time share salesmen roam the property constantly hassling you to buy overpriced timeshares, our room was almost a mile from the beach and a block from the pool, and virtually no rooms have a view of the beach or pool. Our front door had a two inch gap under it so geckos could come and go as they pleased. Hotel transportation bus blew a tire (all tires were worn lucky we didn't crash) and we waited for 30 minutes by the side of the road for a replacement in the middle of nowhere (safety issue). I suppose if you drink a ton and eat three big meals a day the prices are reasonable, if not, this isn't a cheap place as they will nickel and dime you, and you will need to upgrade to get room service, better? drinks etc. In general Dominican Republic is a very poor country and if you go, stay at one of the most expensive places you can find. Personally there are better places to go in the Caribbean. Obviously we will never go back.

AVERAGE

POWER WAS LOST THREE TIMES. HAD TO TAKE COLD SHOWERS ONE NIGHT. MAID FAILED TO SHOW UP ONE DAY. FOOD WAS GOOD, STAFF WAS FRIENDLY BUT IN MOST CASES NOT WELL TRAINED. ON ONE DAY THERE WAS A FAIR AMOUNT OF GARBAGE COMING ON TO THE BEACH. OVER ALL I WOULD NOT GO BACK TO THIS RESORT.

decent value

This is a nice resort, but I've stayed in much better all inclusives. This place seems to nickle & dime you (for example - you have to pay extra to use the safe in your room#. Not all restaurants are included in the all-inclusive price. All restaurants we went to were really good, but the buffets were so-so. This is a HUGE resort. Not all rooms are close to beach or pools #in fact, some are a long walk or tram ride away). Staff is very friendly and helpful. Almost all spoke fluent English. The location is great. very short trip from the airport. If you don't plan on doing any excursions, no need for a rental car.

Enjoyed our stay

My husband and I went for 5 nights and enjoyed our stay. It was very relaxing. The only thing we thought could of needed improving was the food, it was bland and very often lukewarm. I would go here again, but would eat at the specialty restaurants.

Disappointing stay

The hotel did not match my expectations at all. I chose the place according to the reviews, looking at the photos presented. First of all, these photos are totally fake. They gave me an old room, very simple, with need-to-improve basic items. No LCD TV, no stylish furniture, no hydro-massage tub. You have to select ONE Restaurant per night with prior reservation. Three of them were closed and unavailable during my stay. Options of drinks at the bar and restaurant areas are very limited. Service should be better for a 4-star hotel. Small lakes and garden areas have a disgusting smell. Maybe at the other side of the Melia complex, at Paradisus or VIP area (called REAL SERVICE) they can offer something worthy. I felt like paying too much for this limited all-inclusive. There are better options at the same Bavaro Beach, just right aside. Be careful, this is not really a 4-star hotel. In my oppinion It does not deserve a 3.9 evaluation. I would NOT recommend this hotel to a friend.

we have never been to a all inclusive before but this trip was nice. good service, nice rooms, great grounds. the only turn-offs were the pushy timeshare salesmen and the food could have been better. do not go to the special breakfast this will just waste hours of your vacation.
