Excellent vacation
Sharon Nov 14, 2009
This was my first experience with an all inclusive. The check in was quicker than anticipated. We were done in about 15 ... mins. The room was spacious enough, though the balcony was tiny. The bathroom was adequate. The tub retained water while the shower was running, & the water couldn't maintain a constant temperature. Also, the tub was difficult to get in and out of as it was elevated without a step for convenience to access it. The key stopped working and we were locked out of our room for an hour until we could get it replaced on the first day. The room door was also easily pushed open after closing. The striker plate was replaced in about 15 mins. after alerting the desk. The 2 pools were huge. There were plenty of chairs and shade. Also, the landscaping afforded a lot of privacy so it didn't feel like you were at a massive complex. The beach also had plenty of chairs. The water did have a lot of seaweed, but it was not annoying as it mainly stayed at the bottom. We traveled with a professional chef, and he felt the food was above average for an all inclusive. The only restaurant we ate in that was not impressive was the Japanese. It was a basic hibachi experience. Also, the French restaurant was not memorable. The best were the Italian, the Dominican, the American (I sent back a steak because it was over cooked for me, & they brought another quickly that was amazing), and the Mexican. Breakfast buffets were very good and varied a bit day to day. The service was EXCELLENT. The staff was always smiling, singing & dancing to the music playing. They brought drinks as fast as you could drink them. They are some of the nicest people I have ever dealt with. The shows were not very good, but the musicians they had were excellent. The many bars and seating areas were large and comfortable. The common areas are really well decorated and pleasing. Be prepared if you are not a smoker. People smoke everywhere. The trolley runs all over the resort, but we chose to walk and it wasn't oppressive. If you do choose to walk, wear flats as the walking surface is stamped concrete. It looks like paving stones and is uneven. As far as being harassed over the vacation club, we had no trouble with saying no and the salesman accepting it. You will need some Spanish as the help speaks English, but doesn't always understand what you are asking. As an example, I asked four different ways how long check out would take and the girl kept telling me I could come at 10-11am. There is a very diverse clientele with people coming from South America, Germany, Russia, England, and I thought I heard Polish and French. Overall it was a great vacation and I would stay here again.

We stayed at Melia Caribe Tropical last year and thought it was great. We decided to stay there again this year. The food was ... good, the beach was fabulous. But I was disappointed in the maid service. We arrived early and when it was check-in time (3 PM), our room was not ready. We waited until almost 5 PM to be taken to the room and the 2 maids were finishing up. I couldn't believe that if you had to be out of your room at 12 noon that it would take 5 hours to prepare for your next guests. On 2 different days, the maids came at 4 PM to clean our room. My husband told them just to give us clean towels and forget about cleaning the room that day. Otherwise we had a great time at this hotel.

For the most part it was a very relaxing week. The pool area near the bar is where you want to sit, since they don't have ... anyone serving drinks. They have plenty of huts to sit under when you had enough sun. This place is gigantic, they have shuttle trains that take you to different places within the compound. It runs about every 10 min.I am unsure if they had a shuttle bus to take you to a nearby shopping mall,if they did no one told us about it and we didn't ask.On the day we were checking out we seen a bus in the parking lot that looked like it could have been used as a shuttle shopping bus.We never left the compound because its a long walk to get to the front gate. The food was good at most of the places, but we didn't like the buffet.

The hotel was beautiful and the staff was super friendly and cordial. I have to say you MUST get Royal Service. It made such ... a great difference in our stay and the extra money was worth every penny. The Royal Service restaurant and pool are top of the line. They have great food and service. The staff recognizes and remember your food and drink preferences. They greet you nicely every day. We ventured to the non-VIP area of the resort and although it was nice, you could see the difference in treatment and quality of service, food, and concer of the staff. The rooms were nice but they need to be updated. The TVs didnt work in all channels, the pillow covers had some mold and had to request to change them, no ipod station, no CD player (important if you have kids). I had a disagreement with the gym staff because I wanted to shower after my workout and they gym doesnt provide towels if you are not using the spa services. I thought it was ridiculous that I had to walk to the pool area to get "pool towels" to dry myself. I complaint to the manager and they agreed to provide me towels at the gym but they asked me not to mention to other clients. Other than that, it was fabulous. We had dinner at different restaurants every night and it was delicious. The night shows were also very entertaining.

My husband has Celiac Disease and can't eat anything with gluten. At our Royal Service check-in with sat down with a coordinator who made restaurants reservations for us for every night of the week at our choice. He also picked his meal from every restaurant menu and they prepared it gluten free specially for him.I was very impressed that at every restaurant they knew who we were and they advised us on the things we should stay away from.

Wonderful Trip!!
N/A Sep 18, 2009
The resort is fabulous. Such a tropical environment. You could literally eat off the grounds--It was spotless. This was a ... great location for a vacation. Osum spot for couples...very romatic atmosphere....& great place for a wedding. Since it was off-peak season, it was not hardly crowded. The cab service was $15 per person one-way (airport to resort). You do not need to exchange your money to pasos---everyone excepts American money. We did not have an individual to check us in privately. Prior to arrival, we just went to the check in desk, & then off to eat. The resort is soooo huge, that it is impossible to walk everywhere, so there is a train that comes by several designated spots every 15minutes The presence of the security personnel was very comforting--they were every where, standing guard. We only came across 1 vendor, who somehow got onto the resort. Otherwise, if you walk down further the beach, you will come across them. The room was nice & cozy. Set up like a hotel. We were on the second floor. The bellboy delivers your luggage & places it in your room :). This resort did not have elevators, so it is a lot of up & down stairs, which was not bad. However, for the elderly who may have knee problems, it may be a problem. In addition, you have to walk to the train stop, which may appear to be far for an elderly person. The only negative thing I can say about the resort is that it has an ant problem. There were ants all over the bathroom (counter, floor). Luckly my companion had a brilliant idea to spray some OFF, which resolved the problem. The only other negative thing I can say is that the staff in the lobby & buffet restaurant were starting to become a nuisance. They were constantly asking if someone had discussed the features of the resort & if we were familiar with their time share. Once your so called personal assistance gets you to go to the 90-minute "time share" presentation & you present them with a coupon that you attended, they drop you like a hot potatoe. They don't give you any more courtesy calls to wake you, or schedule your dinner reservations & so forth. The 3rd negative thing was that although the resort has so many restaurants, half of them were closed due to off-peak season. Unless you gamble, there is nothing to do after 10pm. The casio is open until 2 or 3am. This would be an osum spot if they had a bowling alley or race cart track or water park for adults. Bring your DVD's & a player/computer to play them on. If you have asthma or a respiratory condition, this may not be the spot for you---the humidity was so thick, you could barely breath. Bring your sunscreen--the sun was extremely hot. We stay 4 long days, but it seemed like a week. We had done several of the tourist events such as paddle boats & etc in the past with other vacation, so we did not want to tie up our time on this trip. This trip, we just relaxed & layed back--eating, swimming, watching TV...The food @ the restaurants were fabulous. I was told the American Grill serves the best food; however, our so called personal assistant failed to make up reservations for the night we requested. I did not particularly care for the Mexican restaurant; however, my companion said it was the best food he had at the resort & the food was fresher. I really loved the buffet restaurant located with the beach view. They offerred a enormous variety. The Japanese restaurant was great; however, we had to wait an hour to be served, although we had reservation. They wait until the table is full prior to starting the dinner. Don't go here if your are famished---the wait is extremely too long, but the food was great. The chicken & beef was sooooo fresh, you could taste it.

This trip was booked thinking that everything would be taken care of since it was an all inclusive, that was not necessarily ... the case. If you didn't make reservations at one of the resturants you were stuck eating at one of the buffets. The food was absolutely terrible that you almost rather go hungary that night. Most all inclusive resorts you worry about gaining weight we lost weight on this one. The Italian resturant was soo bad that we landed up with indigestion and in bed for the rest of the night. The rooms were not clean, we had some dirt and a dead flower in the bathroom when we checked in the toilet didn't work well and they were not cleaned all day (left the room at 9am and the room wasn't cleaned until 4-5pm). To make matters worse on the last night we found cockroaches in the room!! the really big ones. the staff was not friendly overall (although there were a few nice people). they gave short answers and did make it an enjoyable experience.

Royal Service is a ripoff
Newlywed Aug 27, 2009
My husband and I chose this place over many other places for our honeymoon. It was absolutly beautiful. But the staff was ... not helpful to us. The room service was sub par at best. They did not meet our request for clean robes or make the dishes as they described them on the menu. We made repeated request for the pillows from the menu, but we did not receive them. The "Royal Service" lounge has 2 computers, and they almost always have kids using hogging them to check their facebook accounts. The water activities that are supposed to be included are rarely available for use. All reservations must be made at least a day and a half prior and even at that rate, I would recommend following up because if you don't, you might not have a reservation when you get there...or it might be a 2 hours earlier than what you requested. Transportation to and from your room is promised with the royal service, then when we got here we found out that the only transportation is a trolley they refer to as a train that loops around the entire facility with various stops...even if you don't pay extra for the royal service. The only transportation you can make a request for is to the beach but prepare yourself to wait. It is hot. Some of the restaurants do not have air condition. This place is better suited for spoiled children, not adults. Time share salesman are where ever you go, even the pool. The call it a vacation club. Don't go, its like 2 hours long. If you have a problem, no one will resolve it.

Wonderful, relaxing place to stay
Carolyn and Jack Aug 22, 2009
We enjoyed everything the hotel had to offer. Based on other comments we decided to upgrade to the royal service. Normally ... we don't do that kind of thing because it usually is an upcharge for not alot gained but I will tell you it was worth the few extra dollars! We were upgraded to a master suite and it was just like the pictures! Clean, roomy, romantic and every need was accommodated in a timely manner. We had an easy time getting dinner reservations to any restaurant we chose and enjoyed them all. We ate at the Gabi restaurant for breakfasts and lunches since all of the restaurants appeared to have the same menu for these meals. The Gabi provided excellent service all the time and the food seemed to be a little fresher than at the other locations for lunch and breakfast. [...], at the Gabi provided outstanding and friendly service! We truly befriended him during our stay and he made us feel genuinely welcomed and pampered. The food was pretty good and certainly abundant. I think the French restaurant was just ok but our favorite meal was at the Thai restaurant. I would definitely go back to visit this place if you like rest and relaxation, beautiful surroundings and a pleasant atmosphere. Most staff members can speak English and you certainly can get your point across if you are polite and work with them. If you are an impatient person and expect the world to revolve around you then my advice is to stay in the USA but we absolultely loved the ecclectic mix of people from all around the world.A definite thumbs up and certainly worth the money!

My vacation with my girlfriend was awesome. It was my first time out of the country vacationing. We stayed for 5 days and ... four nights. It was hot and beautiful out. The beaches were a little seaweedy but hey I didnt mind. They have two big pools plus smaller ones. The room was perfect with no bugs. We had a small AC water leak when we arrived and within minutes they guy came and fixed it. The staff knows some english but not a lot. I known no spanish and I did just fine their. I would recommend going to this resort.

The reservation system stinks for dinner. You need to call between 9 am and 9 pm but really you need to call at 9 am and wait until someone picks up. The reservations fill fast. The royal service option costs more and you get preferred reservations and a better room, i might do it next time just for a little more ease.

Melia Caribe Hotel in Punta Cana
Oscar&Lynn Aug 17, 2009
We enjoyed our stay tremendously except for the rainy day w/ no umbrella in room to use (we saw other guests that had). Most ... of the restaurants were great except for the Capri whose seafood tasted like day old leftovers. The best were the French and Japanese. Saona Island excursion was a disaster; there was a torment of rain and crew knew this days before and never offered any reimbursement. My camera was ruined on trip and all in all, the value was over-priced. The parasailing thru Scuba Caribe, associated w/ hotel was also a rip off - they charged $80.00 for 6 minutes that should have been 10-15 minutes. They refused to recompensate. Staff at Capri restaurant knew in advance that we were celebrating our 10th anniversary and did nothing special to recognize us. Other than these unfortunate experiences - the hotal stay was one of the best ever trips we ever took.

Unless you desire vacation club points for future stays in the Melia Hotel goup, as soon as you get there you will be approcahed many times by Melia VC reps trying to get you to go to their "20 minute" VC presentation on site. The reality is it is > 2hrs, takes place at the Paradisus off resort and the comp gifts you get are not worth your time (at least not our time. Word to the wise - saying "No interese" will save your afternoon.

The entertaiment was great!! right in the hotel in almost every corner, every night there was something going on until mid-night. There's a shooping mall right across the street from the hotel with security guard for those that don't feel safe walking around.

to obtain reservations for dinner you must one day in advance. sometimes its frustating but don't give up. we ate at all but one of the spots that we wanted. breakfast and lunch are best at the market place. we liked the thai restaurant as well as the gourmet and the international, but were unable to get reservations at the japanese restaurant. hope this helps.

Try some of the local food...is good.

Making reservations at the restaurants was a little bit of a pain, but it may have had more to do with the fact that we were a larger group (7 people)...might not be a problem for parties of 2 or 4.
