The best place to have fun

Went down there with my best friend to celebrate her birth day and we had so much fun!! the staff was great, friendly and ... really nice. It was the best experience so far. If you are looking for a place thats quiet enough as to get a relaxing massage next to the beach, interesting and that you can also have fun...then this is the place for you.Trying to get a reservation for my bd in March 2010 before it gets over booked...like it did last year ;-) And the best thing is that is not that expensive....the pictures that they have do not do the place justice...is beautifull!!

Bad choice. Don't pay for upgraded room because when you get there is wont be what they give you. I chose the 1 BR Suite (1 ... King and 1 sofa bed) and ended up in regular room with 2 double beds because most of the resort was closed . . NO SPA, NO upgraded rooms. PLUS to make everything worse, the salesmen wont stop hounding you to "buy" their hotel packages. WHAT A LOUSY WAY TO SPEND YOUR VACATION (trying to hide from salemen).

We 1st got to the resort and thought it was beautiful. The front desk at 1st seemed extra nice. They told us they were ... upgrading us to a better suite with ocean view instead of garden view.We get to the room and its a regular dumpy room with double beds on our honeymoon! They proceed to tell us that the room we booked is closed because its not the busy season. So who screwed up? [...] Considering out of the 2300 we spent i saw that the hotel only got 517.50.So [...] took a nice big chunk of that.i feel we should be reimbursed some money considering we didnt get what we paid for! we finally got a better room with a beautiful view but was not what we reserved. And it took some yelling to get the room. Everytime we asked the front desk anything they acted like you were a bother to them.So we are already mad.The food is low quality. The meats have funny tastes to them.Im sure its just because of the seasoning.Bartenders, maids, and there recreation people were great. The resort which im sure happens everywhere lets these sales people in everyday! So prepare to be bothered 15 times a day to go on an excursion,or a timeshare or whatever they are pedaling. We went on 2 excursions.Horseback riding and speed boat. Both were fun. Dont buy them online its much cheaper when you are there because they will barter with you. Then when buying things like necklaces or statues etc.these people try to rip you off.Its very funny. One guy started at 87 us dollars and when we walked away he was chasing us yelling ok 20 dollars! so dont be fooled.Driving there is interesting prepare to bring a helmet and blindfold lol. Overall the reviews for the grand paradise bavaro were exactly what people said. Its a 3 star resort at best. More likely a 2.5 star if you ask me.And trust me we are not high maintanance people. We just want what we paid for! The beach is beautiful and so is the pool. They do keep the grounds in great shape there. The bartenders and maids are very nice.If you want something from your maid i suggest leaving them 2 dollars a day and they will stock you up.Otherwise you get a gallon of water,1 20oz coke and sprite.Oh yeah it also says 24 hour room service. What a joke that is. Room service is only soda and water. So dont think you ordering in at all. Also pay attention to this place because they dont really explain where everything is. We were there 5 days and on the 4th day we were finally just learning how everything worked. Just outside of the main gates, there is a rather large market where locals are selling their products at a much lower price than you will find from all of the other venders. So, if you are interested in picking up a few items (shirts, hats, souvinirs, etc.)don't be affraid to wander over there. They take American money everywhere.

This is an absolutely wonderful resort on an amazing stretch of white sand beach. I spent an extra $15 per night to have a ... room with ocean view and it was well worth the extra expense. The food was great, the staff was wonderful and friendly. There is alot to do or you can choose to do nothing at all and just lay on the beach all day. [...]I am already looking forward to staying there again!!!!!

The hotel was beatiful and had a great location, now on the downside the rooms were small and outdated, the bathroom had a ... leak on the ceiling and was also very small, the bed and the pillows were very hard. The food was excellent, the staff was very friendly( it helps to speak a little bit of spanish). This is the second time I visit DR and I always have a blast there; eventhough, this hotel wasn't the best I've stayed at.

Horrible Experience.... Worst Resort!
D - Dangerous D Aug 26, 2009
My stay at this resort was the worst I have been to. There were live roaches and mosquitoes in the room; no towels available ... for one day; no running water to shower during two nights; and the staff were incompetent and not good with handling the small problems to make my vacation pleasant. The staff were indirectly asking for bribes to perform their jobs. And a couple were having sex in the beach and pool with guests.

Horrible Resort
Trish1223 Aug 24, 2009
This was my third time vacationing to the Dominican Republic, and I must say it was the absolute worst. I arrived there ... around 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 17, and could not check in the room until 3:00, which is normal. At 3:00 we went to check in and stood at the desk for one hour because the machine to make keys was broken. For the whole hour we stood there, no one paid any attention to us, while other guests got into their rooms with extra keys. When we finally got to our rooms our lights did not work and we had no cable, the maid was still in there cleaning while we sat on the balcony. She left and did not put any sheets on the bed. The whole week we were not given any washcloths, although we asked for them several times. The service at this resort was terrible... I have never been ignored so much in my life. Most of the time when we sat down to eat it took us 20 minutes to get a drink. The staff was nothing like any of the other resorts I stayed at; normally they do whatever they can to please you, and talk and have a good time, but not here. The lights, cable, and air conditioning in our building went out every day at 5:00. This was also the dirtest place I have ever stayed at; at any given time there would be piles of cups in trees and cigarette butts all over the floor in the hallway of our room, I have never seen that at any other resort. On our last day we got up and went for coffee and when we came back our credit cards, drivers licenses and cash was gone. Our door was locked so obviously it had to have been someone with a key. The person we filed our report with said the hotel would probably give us a free stay, but why in the world would we want to go back? We came back to the US more stressed then we were when we left! This was by far the worst vacation I have ever been on and you couldn't pay me to go back.

Beautiful resort with inadequate service
Jeff Aug 22, 2009
If you are used to 4-star or above service, you probably shouldn't come here. That being said, this is a beautiful resort ... where few small adjustments on the part of the staff could easily make this a 4-star all-inclusive resort. If you stay at "The Club", you are about 5 to 10 minutes away from the beach, however there is a tram that runs frequently and you're close to several pools and bars (including nice swim-up ones). The junior suite was everything we hoped it would be, with a nice jacuzzi, and comfortable king-size bed. We did have a few complaints here: there is a charge for an in-room safe, the mini bar only has soft drinks for free (everything else is way too expensive) and you also need to ask at the guest services desk for a remote (c'mon!). If you expect prompt service at all times (check in, coffee with breakfast, guest services) you will probably be disappointed, however it is possible that the service improves during the peak season. Some very good things we'd like to note: bartenders are friendly (since I think they are the only ones who receive good tips...), the beach is beautiful, the live entertainment is funny and well done, pools are clean, the food is decent (especially the Japanese and Italian restaurants) and we were actually able to avoid timeshare presentations - unlike other resorts. If you able to adjust to a few inconveniences and accept that it's a vacation and there's no hurry, you will probably be able to have a nice and relaxing time; however, for my next vacation, I will definitely opt for a 4-star or above resort.

The prices in the shops inside the resort are outrageous so don't forget to bring anything you are going to need there (like sunblock, Pepto Bismol, sunglasses, and swimsuits)

Good getaway
Joay Aug 18, 2009
The resort was beautiful with lots of activities and exciting excursions. The people were very friendly and polite. However, ... on arrival we had to wait past our scheduled check-in to get our room. When we finally did make it to the room it had not be cleaned. We spoke to a maid who said she would be cleaning our room and needed us to come back. On our return we found the beds were made but when we removed the comforters the sheets beneath were filled with sand on 1 of the beds. We contacted the front desk who stated they would dispatch someone to take of it. Sad to say no one came until the next day. Apart from the initial hick-up the trip turned out to be a blast. All in all if you're planning to spend minimal time in your room this is the trip for you because there is a lot of stuff to do outdoors.

WORST HOTEL I have ever been to
Olivia Aug 16, 2009
This stay was the worst stay I have ever had a resort. I have never been a picky traveler- this is the first time I am ... filling out a survey with complaints. I travel every year to the dominican republic and i love it. I also love orbitz. But this year, I had such a bad vacation that two of my relatives left early. After a series of bad experiences we started a complaint process with the hotel manager. There is very little english spoken by most employees. There is a lack of consistency. ie, the concierge has a bad habit of changing the prices of things each time you ask. I wanted to switch rooms and they said it cost $10 per night, another said $15, another said he wouldn't do it unless we bribed him. literally. He said we'd need to give him cash in hand in order to get the job done. (this is one of many inconsistencies ) An employee disrobed and had sex in the water with a tourist in front of my kids. it was broad daylight- the families on the beach were horrified. When i placed a complaint about this to guest services, they shrugged it off and said it happens at resorts sometimes. The pools are never clean There are rats, roaches. I found hair in my food several times The dining halls are a mess, you can never get utensils or water at your table without raising your voice I have many more issues with the way they treated me and my family. I am so angry that I want a refund. If you have more questions about this, please feel free to contact me.

Just outside of the main gates, there is a rather large market where locals are selling their products at a much lower price than you will find from all of the other venders. So, if you are interested in picking up a few items (shirts, hats, souvinirs, etc.)don't be affraid to wander over there. They take American money everywhere.

Food was good in the more elite restaurants; however the buffet and other diners, although all inclusive, left much to be desired...

Spend a little more money and go to a better resort because this place is not worth anything!
--Trish1223, Walnutport, PA Aug 24, 2009
The prices in the shops inside the resort are outrageous so don't forget to bring anything you are going to need there (like sunblock, Pepto Bismol, sunglasses, and swimsuits)

Book your restaurant dinner reservations in advance or the first thing when you arrive because they fill up quickly.
--Family of 9, New York, NY Aug 19, 2009
The resort had many fun activities set up through their Kiko's Team.
--Joay, Philadelphia, PA Aug 18, 2009
Overall was good except for the grill at the beach that did not seem to inviting.

Do the mud buggie excursions.. two thumbs up...

Catalina Island Excursion Absolutely gorgeous, a must do. A full day out of the hotel and on Catalina Island near La Romana and Casa de campo.

You can play boardgames with kids on the beach. Participate in beach volleyball, play ping pong or tennis and lots of other water sports. Heaven for kids around 10 years old.
--Vacation mom, San Francisco, CA Aug 12, 2009
Shopping in the hotels for souvenirs is very expensive. You will pay at least 3 times the amount at a hotel for souvenirs than you will pay out of the resort. It's better to buy souvenirs out of the resorts because you are still getting the same item just for a cheaper price, and you are able to bargain the price.

CLUB IMAGINE. Unbelievable club. Is located inside a cave complex with multiple bars, little alcoves, two different dance floors and great service.

Remember to never take drinks from the workers. I got very sick one night with the drink that was prepared for me.

Register early by 10:00 am.

Just outside the resort great shopping area. Vendors are locals and very competitive, thereby, very pushy.
--Grandma3, New Jersey Aug 3, 2009
Very aggressive "sales" people at the market... are willing to take pretty much any price you give them. they start out very high and suddenly drop off quickly.
--Sami's Mom, New Jersey Aug 2, 2009
The resort gives you reservation tickets for the a la carte restaurants. If you decide to use them, make reservations right away. We were unable use one of our reservations because we did not book a reservation early enough and everything restaurant was full.

Try to do as many things as you can during the day, and take the night to rest because the nightlife could be boring.
