I have never tried an "all inclusive" so am unable to compare. I went to attend a family wedding. The hotel staff could not ... have been more helpful or diligent....all were eager to help, friendly and concerned that we have a good time. I was delighted to be upgraded to a lovely suite in Bldg #7 when they did not have the 2 Queen beds I had requested. Unfortunately the upgrade had a pervasive mildew odor in it which did not disappear even though we ran the a/c and tried opening doors to air it out. Thus I had to wash all my clothes when I got home to get rid of the mildew smell. This appeared to be a from a leak in the ceiling, whenever it rained though the maintenance man said it was condensation from the a/c. However, my travelling companion and I did not complain as we had been told at check-in that the hotel was full. Otherwise it was just lovely. Also I was very pleased that front desk staff managed to move our friends to another room a couple of days later, at my request since their room abutted the large and noisy pool and bar area and the noise kept them awake into the wee hours. The furniture was nicked and scratched in all 3 rooms we used but we did not find it offensive considering the price....there were renovations going on in building #1 so they are working on that.....the food was excellent except for one night at the Mare (the seafood restaurant)when the fish was overcooked and inedible and the 1/2 coconut which held my shrimp cocktail was rancid.Others in our group had a good experience at the Mare on a different night so perhaps we just hit a bad night. The buffet (Windows) always had plenty of choices and many local dishes to try as well as American type. The Italian restaurant (Rigolotto) had excellent food and we all liked it the best for table service. It was a bit disappointing to find you could not swim in the pools after 7 pm (I was stopped by a guard) and confining to be turned back some distance down the beach during our walk by another guard who told us it was not safe to go any further....bad people.... We found the one night we went to see the entertainment it was not to our liking and we did not stay for more than two dance numbers....we found the music and the dances to be repetitious. We ventured outside to the native market close by and found the bargaining etc. to be entertaining, though one in our party, unfamiliar with the ways of some of these different countries, found it unnerving to be "swarmed" by the peddlars all wanting us to see their wares. Two of us took the bike tour and though it was way too hot (too close to noon to be out in the sun)it was interesting to see a bit of the area though there was not much to see really. They could put comfy-er seats on the poor old bikes...not comfortable on a bumpy potholed road....Two of us used the kayaks but 1/2 hour per room per day was too short a time frame to go very far, except parallel to the beach for 15 min. one direction and 15 min. to come back....perhaps you can buy extra time, but we did not ask. Our shuttle to and from the airport was excellent.....a mini-van in good condition and no wait for our ride either way. The highway was in good shape also. If I were to chose that type of vacation again, I would have no trouble going there.

At the outdoor market just a block from the hotel entrance, walk briskly, don't make eye contact and wave your hand while saying "Nada" (nothing) if you don't want the vendors "swarming" you. We made a good bargain on some pareos by throwing in two beers from our "allottment" in our room at the hotel.

Rather Disappointed - not 4 star resort
BBChinni Oct 27, 2009
I'm writing this review for my parents whom I sent here for their anniversary gift. First off, I requested a modern renovated ... room on a higher floor MONTHS before their trip, and they were put in a outdated room on the 2nd floor. Next, they said the hotel did not have the majority of the activities going on that they listed on their site (i.e. Spanish lessons, fruit carving, cooking, etc). In addition, they had NO travel agent at the resort to help with booking excursions. Third, they said the food was REALLY BLAND - it had no flavor and was really bad. They said the shows were just okay, usually cheezy and thrown together. Lastly, my father's shoes got stolen from the beach while they were swimming in the water. UGH. They said the staff was nice, the hotel overall looked nice (though their room didn't), the beach was beautiful, the sand soft. They said this is by no means a 4 star resort. I'm disappointed b/c I spent a lot of time & energy (and money) trying to make it a special vacation for them.

Very nice resort and very friendly staff. We stayed here in September 2009 for 5 nights. We got upgraded to a suite which was ... brandnew and very clean. Property was beautiful, beach was clean and ocean was awesome. A la carte restaurants were nice, we loved the Italian restaurant! The buffet restaurant "Windows" had a big selection on food, some of the dishes were not very warm though. Besides that we had a great stay and would definitely recommend this place to our friends.

This is a great place for people looking to relax on the beach. A typical day was spent on the beach with frequent trips to ... the bars and dining areas. The entertainment staff attempts to organize pool or beach side activities but we never participated. Pros- great staff, clean dining- we didn't get sick, great location-close to airport, activities abundant, super relaxed environment. Cons- old buildings, Air conditioner never got the room below 77, pushy vendors. Overall- our perspective as a blue collar couple from the US, this was an excellent experience, i would definitely return, for the price we paid we will probably never go back to a US east coast beach.

Good Value
I read reviews too Aug 31, 2009
I will make it short. We were in August 09. In-room safe boxes are not free. It's $20 for 7 days. Watch out! If the safe ... boxes are working at the time of check-in(without paying), it will stop working within few hours/days and all your belonings will be locked inside the safe box. Then, you will have to pay that $20 to get the safe opened & get everything out. There are also too many vendors in resort and on the beach who are trying to sell you "tours" and other stuff & services. Most of the time you can't even relax for 5 minutes beacuse of those annoying vendors. Keep in mind that all prices are negotiable. Negotiate before you buy!.... 2 of the restaurants are not free either. The Japaneese & Italian restaurants inside the resort are charging $15 per person when you get in.... I wouldn't go back there again, but overall we had a good time. Thanks to some of the tours that we took to Capital city & Saona Island.

***THEY HAVE ROCHES IN FOOD AREA***
Vani Aug 27, 2009
What was offered to me when I purchased the tickets was not what was given to me. The restaurants Windows buffet as well as ... Mare had ROACHES NEAR THE FOOD. On Three occasions I saw Roaches and I made management aware of the problem as well as showed them pictures of the ROACHES NEAR THE FOOD and all they said was "they are working on the problem." They also offered me 50% off my spa bill of a total of 120.00 USD. But ever since I saw these Roaches I was not able to eat there any more because it made me sick just the thought of the Roaches being on the pasta, on the table where the desserts where as well as on the TABLE WHERE I WAS EATING!!!! I had to spend money outside of the resort so that I was able to eat sandwiches every day. HORRIBLE RESORT!!!!

This was the best vacation i have ever been at! The staff are really friendly and accommodate to your every need. Rooms are ... clean and organized and the waiters pay attention to every detail. The only thing i didn't like was that there are other people on the resort trying to sell you vaction packages like snorkaling, swim with the dolphines, and a trip to saouna island. Well some of them are just there to rip you off. Some of the vacation guides didn't belong to a legit company. Other wise everything was great!

unhappy Nikki Aug 17, 2009
The experience was terrible. The only good thing about the trip was how friendly the staff was. The room was dirty, walls ... and celings were craking and falling off. The air conditioning was broke in the room and the casino. There was only 4 restraunts to choose from and the food was terrible, also there were set times for food and inbetween those times there was no where to get food. Casino ripped us off, and refused to look back at the tapes when we figured out what was going on. We did do some things off the resort that we fairly priced and pretty enjoyable. we have gone to several places including vegas, bahamas, myrtle beach and cancun and even the worst trip in my mind so far was not as bad as this trip. I am not a picky person and I am pretty laid back and easily pleased but this place did nothing for me. I was miserable till we went to the hotel next door.

Great Service..
Antonio's mom! Aug 9, 2009
Overall the trip was good. However the service was horrible at the Italian restaurant, from the minute we walked in it was a ... mess. I had a nine month old child with me and I asked for a glass of cold water for his bottle and ten minutes later a waiter brought me a boiling hot glass of water! Then we ordered dinner and all orders came out wrong, not only that but the salad was horrible. The lettuce tasted like a soggy piece of paper.. The shows were not the greatest, the live band entertainment was great though. The people from the vacation club are very pushy they follow you every time you pass them and tend to get nasty. The tex mex restaurant was wonderful, could not ask for better food. In my opinion I say stick with the Windows buffet and the tex mex for dinner if you want great service and food. For lunch the food was better at windows however occasionally the food on the beach restaurant was good, but there service was GREAT. If you have a child this is a great place to stay! As a family we overall had great service and attention through out the trip minus the italian restaurant. Oh and before I forget it is VERY difficult to get a crib for a baby. My husband called in spanish before the trip and made sure we would have a crib. When we arrived the told us NO PROBLEM, it took us seven hours to get a crib for the baby. And that is after we got the resort at 3pm.

Punta Cana get-a-way 8/3-8/7/09
Caribbean Princess Aug 7, 2009
My stay at Punta Cana was okay. It was not at all what I expected compared to other Caribbean excursions. The grounds were ... well kept. The staff was nice. The beach and water activities were okay. The food was not the best, but tolerable. The rooms needed painting badly and there were bugs in the vanity and bathroom daily. Dead bugs were seen on the ceilings and remained during my stay. Housekeeping evidently doesn't look up while cleaning. The hotel offer free bike riding with old antiquated bikes, with the old banana seats which is certain to leave you with a sore bottom, after the rough/rocky bike tour. I don't recommend the bike tour unless they upgrade to 10 speed bikes like the "Dream resort" next door. The Jeep safari was a waste of time and money. The majority of the tour was spent touring a plantation where sugar cane, chocolate and cigars were made. This was good history, but should not have been the bulk of the tour. We also visited "Rancho Monte RIO" where we were told we would have an opportunity to go horseback riding. Well, we went riding alright; only a ten minute ride and not for 30 minutes as told prior to reserving the tour. Also, when I think of a safari, I think of a jungle with animals running about, unlike the misleading pictures shown at the time of reservation. Also, my [...] representative never showed up for our appointed scheduled time. I spent half a day trying to track him down to no avail, I left him messages which went unanswered. I took it upon myself to be in the lobby 3 hours before my flight to see if a representative would show before contacting orbitz. A driver did show up to drive me to the airport on my departure date. Also,if you like to Salsa you had to request the music to be played because the disco DJ played mostly merengue and bachata. We had to ask for them to play Salsa.

If you are looking for a vacation on the beach it is a great place. There is not much else to do but the staff do try to get ... you involved with dances and games. The staff is great. The bad side of the hotel is that the rooms are not very clean and the beds are not very comfortable. Word of advice is to stay away from the shopping area unless you want to be harassed and over charged. Also bring your own sunscreen (it is overpriced in the stores) and off spray (there are a lot of mosquitos at night).

Very unsatisfied traveler Jul 28, 2009
Punta Cana is a beautiful place to go to. My husband and I went for our anniversary and we went on a few tours. The tours ... overall were very fun and the staff was great. The front reception staff at the hotel, on the other hand was a complete nightmare. We stayed in a Deluxe room with a king bed. When we entered the room the toilet didn't work, the phone didn't work and the shower didn't work. They would take forever to replace the towels with clean ones. We would love to come back to Punta Cana, but NEVER stay at the Grand Oasis Punta Cana All-Inclusive EVER AGAIN!!!! The good thing is that we got great recommendations for other resorts that we will use in the future.

Food- Amazing! I didn't have one bad meal, everything was delicious and beautifully presented. Definitely eat at the ... Italian restaurant, it was fabulous! Beach- Very beautiful, never had a difficult time finding a chair to lounge on. You could walk down the beach about 1 mile before hitting the resort limit. Rooms- Very clean, well kept and up to date. Our room and bathroom were beautiful marble. Pools- So many pools to choose from, many were quiet and relaxing while the main pool was more active and loud. Never a problem finding a chair to relax on except at the main pool. Enjoy yourself at The Grand Oasis, if you don't you surely are a miserable person!

A Great Place for a Relaxing Getaway!
Ju Ju Bean Jul 15, 2009
I thought the Grand Oasis was a GREAT hotel to stay at especially if you are looking for a nice relaxing vacation. I was ... only able to go for a weekend but I recommend all those who do go to try and stay for at least a week. There is so much to do!!! During my stay I did get a chance to go Parasailing and get a massage on the beach (highly recommend). The staff was overly friendly especially the bartenders. They always did a little song and dance for you which was always GREAT! The beach is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! There are convenient beach chairs on the beach which you can place at the edge of the water while enjoying a nice frozen pina colada. There is a variety of food ... my ONLY complaint is that certain restaurants were too hot due to lack of AC and it was a little uncomfortable to eat but other than that food was good. Rooms were clean and spacious but you dont spend much time in them since there is so much to do outdoors!!! I loved my experience at the Grand Oasis and wished I was still there! I would definitely return here.
Traveler type: Friends
For all those who like to dance to Merengue, Bachata and Salsa, I do recommend a club called MANGU. It is not in the Grand Oasis it is actually in another resort called the Flamenco so you would have to ask Public Relations for a reservation pick up and drop off at the club. It is one of the hottest clubs I have ever been too! Never did I stop dancing!!! It was great!

Make sure you have plenty of one dollar bills to tip the bartenders. Unless they see cash in your hands, you will not get served!! Our first night, we gave the bartender a $5 tip, thinking that would give us good service for the evening. For our second drink, I stood there 5 minutes while he pretending he didn't see me. When I got out a $1 bill, he "magically" was able to see me! Without a tip visible in your hand, be prepared to wait a LONG time for everything - food, drinks, lobby....

About a 5 minute walk there are some brightly colored shacks on the left side of the street. There are some venders who have cheap prices. (DO NOT BUY FROM THE RESORT). These venders are pushy but just be firm with them and they will leave you alone. If you are buying MAMAWANNA make sure its mixed with red wine they will not let you take dry MAMAWANNA back home to the states. BRING A SPANISH SPEAKING FRIEND OR GET A BOOK ON COMMON SPANISH WORDS! THIS WILL HELP YOU GET AROUND!

I dont know how it is in other countries but in the US we tip our bartenders....I get that its all-inclusive but you should still tip for service.....I see these guys working their butts off and majority of the people just dont tip...crazy!!!

outside of the main gate turn left and walk a couple of minutes to a row of pastel colored shacks on the right side of the road. There you can get great deals on all the same things at the resort and then some. But be ready to hear a song a dance from a very aggressive bunch of vendors who will swarm you like group of hungry piranhas. Just stay focused and haggle away. And do your self a favor and buy a spanish phrase book, learn the language. It will take you far and wide

There is a shopping area outside of the hotel where you could find better deals on items such as Hats, Paintings etc. Never take the first offer, negotiate at least half the original price.

To get to the nearest town you have to walk down the beach 15min. and walk through another resort.
