My girlfriend and I recently spent 6 nights at the Dreams Palm Beach at Punta Cana to attend a friend's destination wedding. We had been looking forward to the all-inclusive package, white sand beaches, and relaxing atmosphere for months. 7 days later, we confirmed we would never visit this, or any other, Dreams resort again. We were greeted by tall palm trees, friendly smiles from the bell-hop, and mimosas at the lobby entrance. The main lobby really is impressive, and it turns out a main congregation area for most adults after 7pm. As the bell-hop brought our baggage up to the room, we noted the modestly appointed bedroom area, tiled floors and balcony. We also noted a very musty smell in the room. This persisted for the entirety of the trip (the HVAC has trouble keeping up with the humidity). The bathroom was FAR from luxurious. The plastered walls had been patched several times, but never completely repainted. Several areas were still brown from water damage. The bathtub was a standard Home-Depot style tub. The tub lacked a full curtain or sliding door to block water, having only a half-length piece of fixed glazing. The result? All water touching the glazing ran down, around, and off the side of the tub onto the floor (this was not just a small amount of spray, and explained the water stained walls). Water pressure and temperature were also spotty... sometimes providing plenty of each, sometimes only cold, trickling water. 2 of the 6 nights the cleaning service didn't even make it to our room to clean it (I had to swipe clean towels from a maid's cart in the hallway). The grounds are generally well manicured and landscaped. Crews clean the walks and grass areas with machettes, which is actually kind of fun to watch (and quiet). What was not as well kept were the pools. The "activity" pool, with the volleyball net, attached to the "kiddy" pool, was mostly clean, but the adult pool, with the swim-up bar... I kid you not, you could not see your feet some evenings. Empty plastic cups lined the edge, left until later in the evening when the staff would finally collect the trash. In the "whirlpool" area of the pool, there was, for 6 straight days, some sort of floating, bubbly, yellowish slush. It reminded me of Pina Colada, but we weren't sure if it was pre- or post- digestion. The kicker, was that even IF the pools were kept clean and tidy, they CLOSE AT 7PM. That's right, no swimming, at all, after 7pm any night. That's not the only time we noticed things close early throughout the resort. Staff begin to close up items like the kayaks, giant chess board (very cool, btw), ping-pong table and others around 6pm. The beaches close at 8pm or dark, whichever comes first. The pool bar closes at 5pm. So what stays open after 7pm? Well, the restaurants (which I'll get to in a moment), the lobby bar, usually some form of entertainment which ranged from lame to modestly entertaining, the "casino" (about 12 slots and 4 tables of dealers who can't count chips correctly) and the "discotheque" that doubles as the sports bar. That's it. So, they've closed up all the fun, relaxing items for the evening and what are you to do now? Eat! You have the options of a Chinese/Japanese, Mexican, French, Italian, a Steak/Seafood Grill, and the standard all-inclusive buffet. The buffet is open 22 hours a day. It was good for breakfast, providing decent options to start your day. Lunch was less than stellar and dinners were usually just... blah. And don't even bother with the late night options at the buffet. It's full of leftovers from the day, so they are dried out and tough to chew. Chinese / Japanese - if you want Japanese Hibachi, get there at 6pm and put your name on the list, as they only seat what appeared to be 4-5 tables of 8 per night. The Chinese was... decent, certainly better than your fast-food local Chinese shop at home, but nothing that wowed me. I take that back. The pre-assembled, pre-frozen sushi rolls did "wow" me, but not ...

Dining

Hit the Barefoot Grill for nachos, chili-cheese fries and cheeseburgers. The best food we ate all week, which is kind of sad when you think about it.

Amazing experience

Went for a dear friends wedding. The service was outstanding. The staff was tripping over themselves to ensure our stay was comfortable, relaxing and fun. I cannot get over how beautiful the grounds were. There were plenty of activities for the kids in our group and the adults. I loved this place.

Attractions

The snorkeling offered by the Marinetime was amazing. They shuttle you to the boat which is a 10 minute ride from the resort. Stay away from the horseback riding!!! These horses are ill and abused.

Beautiful and Relaxing

Would recommend Wed, Jun 29, 2011
room was very nice but there were some stains on the comforter and multiple scratches on walls that a little paint would have easily covered up prior to a new guest's arrival; a/c worked great which was very needed; during my stay my safe's locking mechanism needed to be reset, which talking to multiple others was nothing new; unfortunately, at some point during my last 1-2 days my favorite baseball hat was stolen from my room after it had been sitting on the chest of drawers for 3 days undisturbed

Entertainment hint

we had an amazing snorkel adventure off the punta cana reef that was like being in the largest most beautiful tropical fish tank of your life!

Good for the price

There was so much to do, and the entertainment crew made sure you didn't just sit around the entire time. The hotel staff was excellent, they were some of the nicest people I've met on vacation. The windsurfing instructors were the only staff that weren't so pleasant, the reason being that they took it too seriously and did not understand that were were only trying it out, not trying to become professionals. They were impatient and angry. There were so many excursions to do, some seemed overpriced but you could usually bargain with them. Our only complaint about the hotel is that our shower was freezing cold (the cold water coming out of our sink was warmer than the "warm" water coming out of the shower.) We told the front desk and they said they would send someone up to fix it, but never did. The buffet food was okay, but the food in the restaurants was excellent. I would definitely stay here again.

Dining

Definitely try all of the restaurants, they have a great variety and they are all excellent.

Nice Resort

Overall, it's a very nice resort. The rooms are nice and cleaned very well. The staff is very friendly, and you rarely have to wait long for a drink. The only complaint I have is all of the attempts to sell you stuff you don't want. Even after you tell them that you're not interested, they'll keep talking until you walk finally walk away.

Very nice vacation for two

Would recommend Wed, May 18, 2011
First the good: The hotel and the grounds were exceptional. Beautiful beach and pool area, very nice restaurants and even an entire small house full of games like pool and air hockey. We loved our room (though the shower half-door was a little tricky). The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. We took a salsa lesson, went snorkeling, zip-lining, kayaking, played pool, chess, and ping pong regularly. The zip-lining I would particularly recommend as you drive 45 minutes to get there, so you get a tour of the island on the way. The bad: The theater was in terrible shape and the shows in the evening were mostly girls wiggling around in not enough clothes. I was very disappointed about that. But they did have live music and dancing every night, so we just did that instead. I would not recommend the child care that was provided. We did not bring our children but we saw the playhouse where the children were, and there were signs saying parents were not allowed in! And we saw parents waiting outside for their children to be brought to them. I know some people would not have a problem with this, but personally I like to be more aware of what strangers are doing with my kids. Anyway, our room thermostat did not work, but we were fine because we liked the temperature it was stuck on :) Recommendations: Make sure your room has a "Do not disturb" sign!! My husband and I did not for the first few days and the staff surprised us or woke us several times. Make sure you do not leave anything out over night because we forgot our sandals by the pool one night and they were not there the next morning. Apparently they never made it to the lost and found either because we never got them back. BRING SUNSCREEN!!! My husband got burned through his 30 spf sunscreen so it is a must-have, but WAY too expensive to buy there. $25 a bottle! Overall, we had a wonderful time. Our favorite parts were our comfortable room, the staff, and the zip-lining. We saw a few other hotels briefly when picking up passengers for zip-lining, and Dreams Palm Beach seemed to be a notch above.

Dining

Some nights one restaurant was busy and the next night a different one was busy and the next night they were ALL busy. It was very unpredictable, so if there is a long wait at the restaurant you want to go to, just go to a different one and try again the next night.

Dreams Resort is much nicer than the several other hotels on the island. Through other travelers we definitely realized our luck staying at Dreams. This is no Sandals, however. Everything was OK, the staff was friendly, and the grounds were very clean and beautiful. I enjoyed the resort[...]

Dining

The Lamb in the French Restaurant, everything in the Habachi restaurant & the Grouper in the Seaside were terrific. Everything else was average. It really pays to order the right thing in each restaurant - make sure to ask around before you dine!!

Staff was great. We just relaxed & drank. It was easier to go to the bar & get a drink. Plan to stay on the resort. There isn't anything to do around the resort.
