Not terrible but wouldn't go back

The facilities at this resort are ok, but the food and the service are terrible. Beautiful beach, a few daytime activities, clean rooms... but the place is a little run down, falling apart a little. Overall it's not bad but it is very noisy, the staff is too in your face to do things when you are relaxing, they don't stop peddlers from bothering you on the beach, and the food is just plain terrible. The trip was fun because we made it fun but I would not go back to Puerta Plata, let alone that resort.

Money-saving tip: Not Applicable

If coming from the U.S. bring a lot of small bills. They only have change in pesos so it's easier to pay with 10s, 5s, and 1s and not get much change. Also good for tipping.

The runs for days

The food is bad. I had the runs for days. My parents are from DR. I don't recommend anyone going to this hotel. Its a bad experience for a typical tourist. The best thing about the hotel is that it's next to CoCO Bongo's which is the hottest night club in Puerto Plata. NO LCD/PLASMA!!!!!!!!!!!!

Never Again

We were very dissappointed with the hotel, the quality of the room, bed, tv, bathroom and most of all, the front office staff. We waited till 8:00 p.m. to get a room to find that the door to the patio did not lock, shower head holder was hanging loose and dust on windows and closet. Although a maintinance person showed up the day after we checked in and compalained about the patio door, it was not fixed till we left four days. We had expected a lot better service from a Wyndham property. Well, we live and learn.

Worst Customer Service

The hotel and food were ok, appropriate for the rate of the hotel. Customer service doesn't cost a dime, so there's never an excuse for not having good customer service. I arrived at the hotel at 4:30PM and the bed was not made, after complaining it took an hour for someone to come and make the bed. It took another hour to have the safe activated. We went for dinner at the restaurant on site (Las Palmas)and when we got there it was hard to find a table that had cups, napkins and untensils. We had to wait for them to wash more cups (just buy more cups or get more staff!!). The beach is a 3 minute walk down a path that leads to a restaurant by the beach which is where the afternoon snacks and dinner a la carte is held. The restaurant, reception and bar staff were not friendly and were always too busy gossiping (i know spanish) to serve with a smile. it seems like they were not happy working there. After all this, I tried to get an extra night and the front desk gave me the run around and did not know much about any questions that I had while i was there. [...] from reservations and [...] the bus boy were the 2 good apples in a barrel ful of rotten ones. The show was very good the first night, but the other nights were short and dull. During the day the entertainment staff held different activities and very friendly. One last thing, if you stay in the main building, you will hear the hotel disco late at night and the kitchen early in the morning and if you stay in the other building you will hear the loud pool music in the morning.

Dirty, dirty, dirty. Food was horrible.

Orbitz changed hotel reservation for us. They were very helpful. Representative from Coco tours helped us contact you so we could leave hotel asap. This place was so filthy. We were afraid to even eat the food. Staff was rude. Room was horrible. Broken furniture, so dirty we didn't even want to use beds. I would not recommend anyone to that hotel.

Crowded, noisy, not clean

My husband and I have stayed in various hotels in Puerto Plata. This is the first time at Viva Wyndham and it wasnt a good experience. The hotel was PACKED with screaming locals all over the place. We were given a "junior suite with a king bed" and it was right by the nightly entertainment area and the disco. This was horrible. At 1am we were up listening to the loud music and couldnt sleep. The same night that we checked in, I saw two big water bugs in the bathroom. The roches had crawled through the balcony doors that would not close properly. We complained, yet we had to wait until the following day to get a room transfer. The food wasnt bad, but we had to beg for ice and glasses. For some reason they were constantly running out of both. We also had to chase the staff around to get eating utensils and a napkin. The best feature of this hotel is the beach, but other than this, I woudnt recommend it. The pool is very small and the mirrors around it are broken. The rooms were we stayed were pretty old and the furniture had chips everywhere. We expected better service, a cleaner environment, and a more attentive staff.

Shopping tip: Short walk from hotel

The tourist shopping area in Playa Dorada is fine, but very very hot. None of the stores that we went to had an AC.

Safe and Secure Vacation at a Good Price

Very safe and reasonably priced way to experience the Caribbean. Food and activities both outperformed the price given that we only spent 50$/ppn, double occupancy in a junior suite. Playa Dorada in general is for a very specific type of traveler. Very protected from the outside world, which has its advantages and disadvantages. After the first couple of days, we left valuables like cameras sitting on the beach chair for extended periods of time without a second thought. The drawback is you are completely isolated from the local culture and surroundings. If you never left Playa Dorada (and it seemed many didn't) you would never be able to identify which island you were on. It would be a shame to miss out on the rest of the DR's north coast couped up in this resort despite the fact that I gave it 4 stars. The north cost is a very safe place and doesn't warrant staying a compound of this kind. Definitely not for younger people or the adventurous, but for older travelers or those scared of their own shadow I would recommend Playa Dorada and Viva Wyndham.

With not recommend

I had to change my room three times because the air condion would not work. The bathroom floors were always wet with water due to dripping water from the ceiling. The staff was not always helpfull when you had questions. It would be a nice hotel but it needs alot of work. I will say the gardens are well taking care and they do pick up all over the beach.

OK not great.

Well the food at the buffet gets pretty annoying really quickly. The Staff is great and they put on shows every night which are good. The main problem with this place is the food and the overall maintainence of the rooms. But if you need an affordable place this is for you. I think this place is more for Spring Breakers then it is for a Family Vacation.
