Everything we were looking for

Beautiful location, wonderfully helpful staff, food was better than we thought it would be for an All-inclusive. Even the vendors on the beach were friendly, not pushy at all. It was a wonderfully relaxing trip.

Sightseeing tip: Short drive from hotel

If you are into the Rum factory tours, then take a short ride to the Brugal Run factory in downtown Puerto Plata. Unlike the Bacardi tours in Puerto Rico, you see the actual bottling process here start to end. the tastings are not bad either....

Couples trip

Overall I was really excited about my vacation , which resulted in a disappointment first and foremost please put all of your items in the safe if not you will have your cell phone stolen like my husband did , our belongings were left safe and secure inside of our luggage , and found it opened and missing his brand new iphone 5, the security wrote up a report and was told to follow up the following morning with the front desk. I did as I was told in which the front desk completely ignored me and pushed me away saying there was nothing that could be done.

All In One.

I expected a hotel and restaurant and amenities, but what we (my family and I) got was an experience to last a lifetime. Although there were some little issues, everything was handled very professionally and quickly. The rooms are clean and have what you need but they are basic. For the area, comparitively, it was a Great Spot. Food was amazing at every meal and the staff went way beyond what we expected. The nightly entertainment was always good. Had we gone to just relax and rest, I could have easily stayed right on the resort and enjoyed every minute as they also provide daily activities starting in early morning. We did some excursions, which we were more than delighted with. We also, unfortunately, found out to late that there is a tourist bureau there that have employees that will come to your hotel/resort and take you out on a safe and informative tour of the area. It is not necessary to pay/tip them but we did. The guide we had on the last day for 2-3 hours was courteous, polite and asked what types of things we wanted to see and was able to accommodate us. We decided to go with the tour as we were informed that sight seeing without a local or guide may not be the safest thing to do. Over all we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to anyone wishing to visit this area. Just take a few extra dollars (Peso's) for tipping as they go above and beyond to make your stay comfortable. Also, for anyone interested, we exchanged money at the airport and also at the hotel. You can just take american funds and they accept that as well as you wouldn't lose the currency exchange then by not changing to peso's. A word of caution though - I rented a vehicle which was paid for prior to going but in the end paid an extravagant amount for "security and insurance" that is apparently not optional in this country. One last note - The weather was fantastic. Any rain showers lasted a few minutes (we had two) and on the last day we had a down pour that also dispersed very quickly after one hour.

Use American funds. No loss of money due to exchange rate to the Peso or any other type of money. They readily accept the American dollar.

Don't waste your time

Hotel was in desperate need of an update, which started our 2nd last day, which we didn't know when we booked. Entertainment was boring. There were more vendors on the beach than there were guests. Staff was very friendly.

Vendors ruin the experience

This was only my 2nd all inclusive getaway but here is my opinion for it's worth: 1. Weekends are terrible: all the locals invaded the resort. It was crowded and little kids running around everywhere 2. Our room floor was always wet, some type of condensation. It was pretty dangerous but staff ignored our request for help with it. The best they did was give us new towels to keep on the floor 3. The food was sub par. The Italian restaurant was decent. But the ocean grill forgot to serve us our dinners. The Buffett was whatever, nothing special. All drinks were watered down 4. Americans were treated pretty poorly. We were not the only couple that noticed it. We were ignored often despite tipping everyone. 5. The vendors are OUT OF CONTROL on the beach. You cannot sit and enjoy yourself without being harassed by someone trying to sell you a good or a service. Even a nice walk on the beach turned into us being harassed by other resorts to visit them about time shares. Do not buy anything from the beach vendors. They are double the price of all goods you can find if you walk to the resorts mall. Which also be careful of because they ripped me off when I was just trying to buy a little trinket for my kids. Overall it was nice to getaway but no chance we would ever go back. Spend a few more dollars and go somewhere else, especially if you are American.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Do not buy anything from beach vendors. Do not even engage them in conversation because they will not leave you alone. All stuff you can buy in the resort mall for half the price which is still expensive

Perfect!

We loved our stay at the Gran Ventana. Everyone was genuinely friendly and eager to serve. Elvin the bartender at the beach bar was awesome, friendly, and always greeted us with a smile. Drinks were good and strong. Meals were great - Ocean Grill (seafood) was to die for. We did a Dune Buggy tour for 3 hours which was amazing. Beach does have lots of vendors but a quick "no thank you" will do the trick. Rooms were sparkling clean and comfortable with updated bathrooms and great a/c. HBO & Cinemax available - we didn't even miss Game of Thrones!
