Riu Merengue

Had a grat time. Food very inconsistant. Dominican Nite had an awesome spread and should be available daily. Real singers not lip sinkers goes a long way. this hotel lacked actual singers but the dancing was great.

unbeatable price for location

The food was OK, found most of the staff friendly but made no atempt to try and understand you. Housekeeping lady was very nice and the pool people went out of their way to find you room around the pool. Did not like the fact that they only put 3 bottles of beer in your fridge every other day and only pepsi and diet pepsi as the other beverages.

Make sure you fill out the 3 forms before going through any area of the airport as everyone wants a different form filled out. Look after your own luggaga as everyone wants to take it for you and expect tips from you every time.

High School Cafeteria Food

We actually got upgraded to the Bachata, but went to all 3 RIU properties. The setting is very nice, the grounds, the pools, the beach. Our room was musty and mildewed and we spent as little time in it as possible. The food was just plain bad. Yeah, there's a lot of it, but it's bad. Don't bother with the special Italian and Steakhouse restaurants, it's not worth the effort of getting up early to make the reservation. Also, know that the bartending staff's job is to NOT serve you alcohol. But when they mix drinks, they use mixed stuff that doesn't have alcohol in it, unless you specify and watch them pour it. They also serve near beer which could not get you drunk, and even their wine is extremely low alcohol (not to mention pretty gross). Oh, and they don't stock enough beach towels for some reason, so you'll need to get up by 8:30am your first morning to get one, and then hold onto it the rest of the time you're there. So unless you have really low standards of what you consider good food, just don't go here.

if you don't care about sleeping....

The hotel is extremely far from the airport (you incur an EXTRA cab fare). The food was fairly good, but there isn't a lot of variation from day to day. As for the hotel itself, the room was terrible. After changing rooms due to an overpowering smell, the second didn't manage to bring any better accommodation. The beds are extremely uncomfortable and the bathroom looks like someone's bathroom in a small apartment. The beach wasn't that great either, it wasn't the cleanest or most desirable piece of beach I've seen. And from what I've heard from talking to other tourists, a lot of people decide to spend two weeks. There is nothing to do for two weeks--it would be more than sufficient to spend 4-5 days. There are activities to do like tours and ATV riding--which are great, but because this hotel is the furthest, you end up being first on the bus and then last to get off. Spend the $ for one of the nicer hotels or come not expecting a lot.

far out

I went to the Dominican Republic to buy property and soon realized that the property I was most interested in was in the town of Sosua with that said.. the hotel and its two sister properties were fantastic but about 1 hour from Sosua and about 45 minutes from the Puerto Plata airport. Should you need to leave the hotel taxis are very expensive $100.00 each way to Sosua. However, if your plans are to stay at a nice hotel with good food very nice beach and a friendly staff I dont think you can beat the riu merengue.

Umm Not that Great

Rooms need updating. Rooms were Very small. Beds were hard. Outside was nice. Well except that you could see thru the shower windows. Grounds were very nice. Very well maintained. Food was the same choices. First night there the food was great after that it seemed to have very few changes. Same food for lunch and dinner. Breakfast was always the same choices. Beach was beautiful. Lots of chairs to lay on. Getting a towel after 4pm was impossible.

great people, great place, grate vacation

the stay at the resort was great. enough privacy, yet easy access to the ocean, dining places, shopping, ect. very clean! workers are extremely nice and friendly. great atmosphere! the only disadvantage (that i thought to be a disadvantage) was the bed made up of two twin size beds, but it just made me and my boyfriend sleep closer to each other on one side of the bed!
