A nice weekend getaway

Hotel - both public space and rooms - exude charm and elegance and give off a real sense of tranquility, complete with songbirds and crickets. The facilities are nice and the outdoor pool/deck space is beautiful. Room service food is a little lackluster - food comes promptly but hamburgers were fatty to the point of inedible. Restaurant food is EXCELLENT - would recommend eating there instead. Some of the staff spoke little to no English- but it is the Dominican Republic, so adjust your expectations. It's nice and romantic, albeit a little boring.

Excellent *****

If you're reading these reviews because you are planning a trip to this resort, then do yourself a favor and don't bother reading those negative reviews here or on any other place. There's nothing negative about Casa Colonial except for a beautiful resort with beautiful grounds, a great friendly staff and excellent food. A very relaxing vacation.

amazing

I have stayed at 5 star resorts all over the world. From the Breakers, to the Ritz, to the Penninsula in Hong Kong. My expectations were somewhat tempered by seeing some of the surrounding hotels and area however I was nothing short of amazed at everything about the hotel and staff. Usually in the carribean the beaches are great and the food is so-so. Not the case here. The food was outstanding. The staff was the most attentive I have ever seen. The rooms we large and clean and very up to date. I will never visit another carribean island again. You get far more than you pay for here. I cannot say enough good things about Casa Colonial. I will say it's not really for children. But if you are looking for a quiet and relaxing getaway this is the place.

Entertainment tip: Short drive from hotel

Don't leave the hotel. You may be tempted by ads for the show at ocean world or some other night spot. They are all disappointments and you will be better off at the hotel. The "Bravissimo" show at Ocean World was a complete joke. Don't be fooled.

Casa colonial

One of our favorite spots. Despite bad weather we had lots of fun. Plenty of activities nearby for kids including zip lines and ocean world swimming with dolphins and petting sea lions. On the beach you can para sail, jet ski or take out a catamaran. Staff was wonderful, food good if pricey. Decent golf course adjacent and gorgeous golfing an hour and a half away. Fantastically convenient from new York.

Perfect Spot for a Honeymoon

From the minute to arrive into the spacious lobby looking through into a cool italian styled foyer and bar you are immediately relaxed. Casa Colonial feels like a cross between Versace's home on Miami Beach, A villa on Lake Como and a bermuda boutique hotel. It is elegant, stylish, well thought through and dignified. The restaurants on the premises are truly wonderful. Consider that there is not much else to do in Playa Dorado or Puerto Plata (with the exception of Al Frescos, a local seafood restaurant). Get a beach front Jnr suite. The beach is very close and nothing beats the sound of the waves from your 4 poster bed. Pool area sits on the top floor above a well appointed spa. Infinity pool leads to 4 jaccuzis, perfect for couples. I'd avoid bringing kids. Owner is classic Italian, his stylish wive has done an amazing job designing Casa Colonial. I cannot stress enough how amazing this place is.

Phenomenal Vacation

The hotel is truly magnificent--from when you are first greeted, offered a cool drink, and checked in to our last day, the service was impeccable. Our room was on the third floor, had a balcony which overlooked their lagoon/manicured gardens, and was on the same floor as the pool. We spent the days reading, walking on the beach, hanging out by the pool, and not doing much else. Casa Colonial is one resort in a larger complex of resorts that share the same long stretch of beach-- The resort was not busy, and we did not take advantage of the spa, which looked amazing. The hotel had amazing outdoor spaces--the rooftop infinity pool with four jacuzzis overlooking the beach, a beachfront bar, beachfront cafe, and formal indoor dining space-- The service was personalized and impeccable. Finally, the food was consistently good to great--even for vegetarians--

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

They have you sign for a 1000 dollar charge--but, only charge your credit card for the actual amount that you use at the end of the stay. The complex's central mall is located a short walk away with a bunch of souvenir stores, a couple of restaurants, and, the single most efficient Pizza Hut known to man. While the food in the hotel is excellent, the prices for food and drink are comparable to US prices, and the 16 percent tax and 10% service fee at the hotel really increases the prices--the mall offers a much cheaper price for snacks and bulk alcohol.

Very Expensive!

There is no question that "Colonial" is a first class hotel. I was lured to this newly built (3 or 4 years old)with what seemed a reasonable rate considering it's proximity to a great golf course and private beach. (About $1700 for seven nights)However, the cuisine and liquid libation is prohibitively expensive by any standard, never mind "Dominican" pricing! Further, you can only "charge" to your room and they employ a very misleading accounting practice of separately listing the food and drink. This makes it difficult to reconcile the "totals" you sign for each time you charge dinner, lunch, etc., etc.! I will contest these charges whence I receive my Visa statement. Exchange dollars for pesos at the local shopping Plaza (Hotel drives you for free by golf cart)...for tips for the staff. You will save appreciably by tipping separately in cash. 100 pesos goes a long way with [...] at the breakfast "Veranda" and other beach and jacuzzi conveniences; such as that frozen Pina Colada or daquiri, "officiously" served to thee after a refreshing dip in the azul sea water! DO NOT reserve dinner "on the beach!" Exhorbitantly Expensive!!!!

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Though a 10 percent tip is built into everything (its the law of the land, BTW) outstanding service should be rewarded and frankly is reciprocated in many ways. A little extra alcohol in that drink a little extra fruit in your breakfast plate. Needless to say, Golf at Playa Dorada is a 2 minute drive by hotel cart and absolutely outstanding (about $100 USD for 18 holes with cart...caddy extra and mandatory unless you've an up to date PGA card with less than a 10 handicap)
